Bush set to back Bretton Woods II

A senior Whitehouse official says US President George W. Bush supports the proposal made by French president Nicolas Sarkozy to hold an international summit on the world financial crisis. Mr Bush is expected to make an official announcement to this effect after his talks at Camp David this weekend with Mr Sarkozy and EU President José Manuel Barroso. The summit is likely to include not only the G8 countries, but also rising world economies such as China and India.

This news appears to signal a change of heart in Washington. Only recently Mr Bush seemed sceptical about the chances of such a summit producing meaningful results but now it seems he even willing to host the event. So too is United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who has offered the UN Headquarters in New York as a venue.

The planned summit is being widely regarded as a successor to Bretton Woods, the international monetary conference of 1944 where the foundations for a new economic world order were laid.

Bretton Woods II ...
Er is geen alternatief.
Zelfs met een Bretton Woods II ziet de toekomst er somber uit.
