En toen Tesla een half jaar geleden 1e werd, kwam NIO, XPeng en Li Auto nog niet eens voor bij de top 25...

Ook de sterke stijging van BYD (nu 5e van 18e 1 jaar geleden) die naast E-wagens en -bussen ook hun batterijcellen maakt is niet onverwacht.

The Chinese e-mobility startup NIO has more value than BMW, Ford or GM

The Chinese “electric car” NIO was founded only 6 years ago, with the first model launched in 2018. Today, it is the 6th most valuable car in the world. It also announced the expansion into Europe, electric cars with a range of over 900 km (NEDC), the possibility of renting batteries or expanding stations for quick replacement of exhausted batteries. And her Chinese “colleague,” Xpeng, is doing well.

In June, Tesla became the most valuable company that produces (also) cars. And in this direction, other e-mobility startups are also growing significantly, while surpassing traditional car manufacturers. This suggests that markets and investors have strong confidence in the electrical future of the automotive industry.

The young Chinese electric car currently has a market value of around 60 billion. $, making it the 6th most valuable car manufacturer in the world. In this respect, it currently surpasses carmakers with a long history such as GM, BMW or Ford. Since June 2018, when it launched its first electric car, it has sold just over 63,000 cars. At the same time, this is certainly considerably less than in the case of the above-mentioned traditional producers.

Records during a pandemic

NIO’s market value has more than doubled in the last month, thanks to the fact that it delivered a record number of its cars during the “crown-October” – 5,055 (a year-on-year increase of 100.1%). In total, the number of deliveries climbed to over 31,400 this year (a year-on-year increase of 111.4%). So at a time when sales of conventional cars from traditional cars are declining, NIOs, but also Tesla, for example, are setting historical records. This may indicate the path taken by the car industry as well as by the companies themselves. And the financial markets are clearly responding to this development.

NIO currently offers 3 fully electric models, namely ES8 (large SUV), ES6 (medium-sized SUV) and EC6 (it is basically a “SUC” version of the ES6 model). These are available with batteries with a capacity of 70 and 84 kWh, while the offer has currently been expanded by a 100 kWh battery. The largest battery in terms of capacity, while the top model ES8 will provide a range of 580 km (NEDC) and the smaller model about 615 km (NEDC). If you would like it, you can wait for the recently announced battery with a capacity of 150 kWh, which is to ensure a range of over 900 km (NEDC).

In many parts of China, there is no need to worry about driving or long waits to charge a NIO electric car when traveling long distances, as the carmaker is constantly expanding its network of stations for quick battery replacement at home.

Such an exchange should take about 6 minutes in practice. There is a great interest in the service. In just over 2 years, the NIO company has already made almost 1.2 mil. exchange. In addition, it is not necessary to buy NIO electric cars with a battery. It is possible to rent it. The purchase price of the vehicle is thus lower by the price of the battery. In the case of the basic one with a capacity of 70 kWh, this is € 8,500 less.

Another useful service from NIO can be mobile charging, which is useful if the vehicle is discharged during the trip, out of reach of conventional chargers. So the NIO works very hard on himself and everything suggests that it is bearing fruit.

Xpeng is also doing well

And another Chinese e-mobility startup Xpeng, which has already started its expansion into the European market, is also bearing fruit. This young company is currently the 17th most valuable car manufacturer on the market. Thanks to the market value of around 26.5 billion $ is higher in this direction than e.g. Suzuki, PSA, Subaru or Nissan.
