Tesla’s margins are ‘more solid than they appear,’ this analyst says

Published: July 30, 2019 12:27 p.m. ET

Macquarie keeps $400 price target on Tesla

Tesla Inc. stands to save millions from its cost-cutting efforts earlier in the year, and margins are “more solid than they appear,” analysts at Macquarie Research said in a note Tuesday.

Tesla TSLA, +2.56% shares were poised to extend gains for a second session, but are still reeling from a 14% drop a day after the Silicon Valley car maker reported a wider-than-expected quarterly loss and sales lagged behind.

Tesla also said last week its No. 2, Chief Technology Officer J.B. Straubel, was leaving, its the highest-profile executive departure.

The Macquarie analysts, led by Maynard Um, kept the equivalent of buy on Tesla stock and a price target of $400, among the highest from Wall Street analysts polled by FactSet and a nearly 70% implied upside from Tuesday’s prices.

- The benefits of Tesla’s ongoing cost-cutting measures “do not appear to be baked into (second-half 2019) forecasts,” they said.

- The restructuring actions are likely to result in estimated cost savings of about $130 million for remainder of the year, the analyst said. Including restructuring charges incurred in the first half, they forecast Tesla’s operating expenses to be down about $66 million, they said.

- Tesla’s second-quarter gross margins were hit by one-off items that are past the company and margins will improve in the second half, they said.

- Moreover, “underlying gross margins more solid than they appear,” the analysts said, estimating that Model 3 second-quarter gross margins, around 18% to 19%, were “likely down only marginally” despite a $7,000 fall in the sedan’s average selling price, “attesting to the scale benefits Tesla can achieve.”

Citaat:
Elon Musk tweeted a Tesla Inc. production number that the company hadn’t communicated previously, presenting the first test case of whether his April settlement with securities regulators has made him more disciplined on social media.

The post in question concerns Tesla’s solar roof, which Musk first unveiled in late 2016 and has struggled to mass-produce. When asked by a follower for an update on the product, the chief executive officer replied Monday that he was hoping the company would manufacture about 1,000 roofs a week by the end of the year.
...
The tweet appears to fall under the scope of Musk’s amended accord with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Under the agreement, Musk must get pre-approval from a Tesla securities lawyer before posting production figures that haven’t been disseminated before.

Neither Tesla nor Musk previously issued a projection for how many roofs the company will produce by the end of this year.
...
Tesla didn’t mention the solar roof product in its second-quarter investor letter last week, and executives didn’t broach it on the ensuing earnings call. While the company did say in a filing Monday that it’s working on design iterations and testing to improve its manufacturing capabilities, it didn’t provide a production forecast.

Producing 1,000 roofs a week would be a massive increase for the company.

Trump pledge to impose another 10% tariffs on Chinese imports bolsters rate-cut expectations

Published: Aug 1, 2019 2:10 p.m.

Traders' expectations for the Federal Reserve to ease policy rose in the fed fund futures market after President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on the remaining $300 billion worth of imports that have up to now been untouched by levies. Expectations for the Fed to cut rates by 25 basis points at the September meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee climbed to 70.4%, from 48.6% a day ago, CME Group data show. This comes only a day after Fed Chairman Jerome Powell suggested July's 25 basis point rate cut was more of an insurance policy against global economic risks.

Trump announces new tariffs on Chinese goods starting Sept. 1

Published: Aug 1, 2019 1:41 p.m. ET

President Donald Trump said Thursday the U.S. will impose 10% tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese goods beginning Sept. 1. In a tweet, the president said trade talks with Beijing are continuing after U.S. officials returned from negotiations in China. The 10% levies will apply to $300 billion of Chinese goods coming into the U.S. It doesn't include $250 billion of goods already subject to tariffs, the president said. U.S. stocks DJIA, -0.91% turned mostly negative after Trump's announcement.

Even if Tesla’s efforts to produce its own battery cells are successful, the company is likely to continue its cooperation with Panasonic for the time being. Tesla employees familiar with negotiations with the cell supplier indicated that the company will most likely work with Panasonic and LG to provide the cells for the Model 3 manufactured in China.

Neither Tesla nor Panasonic have responded to requests from CNBC.

At the general meeting this month, Elon Musk hinted that scaling of battery production to keep up with demand was currently limiting Tesla’s growth. Elon Musk, JB Straubel and Drew Baglino made comments suggesting that Tesla is looking to manufacturing its own battery cells. Elon Musk hinted that the scaling of battery production was currently limiting Tesla’s growth. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that we can scale as quickly as possible,” said Musk. But when it came to battery production, he said he “didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag too much”. Drew Baglino, vice president of technology, added that its best to be “master of your own destiny”.

More information has been promised at Battery and Powertrain Investor Day that Tesla plans to hold before the end of the year.

China "laat" Yuan devalueren, tja Trump...

China laat yuan devalueren nadat Trump 10% extra taksen instelt

LG Chem, Samsung SDI get closer to win battery subsidy in China

Chinese battery makers have enjoyed rapid business growth thanks to generous state subsidies as part of Beijing's effort to nurture the EV industry. But the Chinese government recently announced that it would reduce its subsidies starting June 25 in a bid to encourage the battery makers to develop enhanced battery technologies.

While China is scheduled to phase out state subsidies given to EV manufacturers by 2020, the EV subsidy cuts will be an opportunity for Korean battery firms that have competitiveness in high-density batteries, according to an analyst.

"The Chinese government's announcement to cut subsidies to EVs and related industries would accelerate the restructuring of the battery manufacturing industry there," said Lee Soon-hak, an analyst at Hanwha Investment & Securities.

"Some Chinese battery makers, which lack technological capabilities and have heavily relied on the subsidies, will face difficulties in the race. For Korean battery makers, which have been rejected from receiving the subsidies, may benefit from the move."

South Korean EV Battery Manufacturers Excluded from Chinese Subsidies Yet Again
By Jung Min-hee May 9, 2019

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has recently decided to provide no subsidies for EVs equipped with batteries supplied by the South Korean companies. The vehicles are four Dongfeng Renault and one Chongqing Jinkang models, which received type approvals last month as a step prior to the subsidies. The subsidy per vehicle is approximately 10 million won and competition in the local market is nearly impossible for those without it. Beijing Benz EVs equipped with SK Innovation batteries received a type approval in May 2018, yet no subsidy has been provided for the vehicles so far.

The Chinese government has never explained why. Experts point out that its intention is to protect the Chinese EV and EV battery industries by taking advantage of the THAAD deployment.

Before the THAAD deployment, LG Chem used to supply its EV batteries to Great Wall Motors, SAIC Motor, FAW Group and Changan Automobile, while Samsung SDI used to supply its EV batteries to Yutong, Foton and JAC. The South Korean companies built battery manufacturing plants in China for the supply, too. However, their local EV battery sales have dropped since the deployment.

Yet Chinese companies are still enjoying subsidies in the South Korean market. According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, 40.4 percent of last year’s total electric bus sale subsidies went to Chinese companies. Under the circumstances, BYD, the largest EV company in the world, is planning to enter the South Korean EV parts market.
