Het is al een tijdje duidelijk,het balanceren van het net met gascentrales is echt wel uit de tijd.....


Er is een groeiende markt voor dergelijke balanceer-eenheden,units die gedurende een cruciale korte tijd (een paar minuten tot misschien een half uur afhankelijk van de risico-analyse) het net in een ganse regio kunnen "hoog" houden tot het "probleem" waardoor ze getriggerd zijn opgelost is.

Overigens,we zouden het vergeten,battery-units kunnen ook gebaseerd zijn rondom lood-zuur batterijen,maar Tesla lijkt nu een soort uithangbord te zijn voor de Lithium-batterij gebaseerde net-balanceerder....

Ze leveren gedurende korte tijd voldoende energie om belangrijke funkties te onderhouden dan wel een stevige energiestoot asap te geven en,indien toepasselijk,zullen ze zich als het schijnbaar "rustiger" is,enigszins ontladen (energie afstaan aan het net) om in staat te zijn plotsklaps opkomende energiestoten (bvb van Windmolens,zonneenergie,......) die niet direct elders kan verbruikt worden zelf op te nemen in een laadproces.....Zo een bufferbatterij speelt op dat moment even voor "grote verbruiker"....DAT is balanceren voor grote mensen!

Waar vroeger een ganse controlekamer met veel technici en telefoons en wijzers en knoppen voor nodig was....doen nu wat microcontrollers en "nifty" geschreven software (met bijna AI)capaciteiten)die klus...

Dat allemaal in wat containers en een transformator-unit in een parkje met een hek rond ....

Canaccord Genuity analyst Jed Dorsheimer recently noted that Tesla has shifted to cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for its flagship energy storage product, the Megapack. Such a change may seem minor, but the advantages presented by LFP batteries for the Megapack are notable, so much so that it may very well trigger an energy storage revolution of sorts.

“Tesla announced that Megapack will be using LFP cathode batteries, similar to the entry-level Made-in-China Model 3/Ys. This is significant, as Tesla ramps up their grid-scale energy storage product without drawing further on an already supply-constrained nickel-based battery production capacity used in 2170s,” the analyst wrote.

It took Tesla some time before it decided to use LFP batteries for its vehicles. LFP batteries are typically cheaper to produce, and the fact that they use no cobalt makes them one of the least controversial batteries on the market. However, LFP batteries also tend to be less energy-dense than the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells used by Tesla in its flagship electric vehicles.

This is part of the reason why only selected vehicles like the Made-in-China Model 3 Standard Range Plus are equipped with LFP batteries. The car, after all, is optimized for cost and practicality, not performance. Nevertheless, this is a factor that is no issue for the Megapack, as energy storage units are not subjected to the same strains as those experienced by the batteries used in Tesla’s high-performance electric vehicles.

The Megapack is Tesla’s largest battery storage product to date. With a maximum energy capacity of 3 MWh per unit, the Megapack is one of the largest energy storage systems in the market. Its design is optimized for quick installations, and its shipping container-like form allows it to be scaled easily. Tesla notes that the Megapack requires 40% less space and 10x fewer parts than current systems on the market, as well.

With LFP batteries, the Megapack could see its production costs decrease, and considering Tesla’s tendency to pass its savings to its consumers through price adjustments, the grid-scale battery may eventually become more affordable. A more affordable Megapack is a formidable product, as it would make it far more reasonable than less sustainable alternatives. It could effectively accelerate the inevitable obsolescence of dirty peaker plants.

Lithium prices declined in 2020, partly due to the pandemic. At the beginning of 2021, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence stated that it expected the lithium market to come into tightness.

“But the speed of price increases in Q1 2021 was beyond expectation, with prices for lithium carbonate having nearly doubled in price since the beginning of the year,” George Miller told the Investing News Network (INN). “Furthermore, shortages and sold out order books in Q1 were a stark change from Q4 2020, where lithium chemicals were freely available to consumers at lower prices.”

As the automobile industry embraces battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the energy industry starts incorporating sustainable solutions with large battery storage units, demand for lithium will continue to grow. Tesla’s Twidell believes Australia has the opportunity to be at the forefront of exporting “climate solutions.”

“Let’s actually increase the benefits to Australia,” he said, adding that the lithium-ion battery value chain is forecasted to be $400 billion by 2030.

During the TSLA first-quarter earnings call, Elon Musk firmly stated the critical role lithium-ion batteries will play in solving the energy storage problem.

“There’s no question in my mind whatsoever that the energy storage problem can be solved with lithium-ion batteries, zero. I want to be clear, zero. I think the bias will tend to be toward iron-based lithium-ion cells.”

A new 142-Tesla Megapack project has been turned on in California’s Ventura County to create a giant new battery that is replacing a gas peaker plant.



The project is called the Saticoy battery storage system, and it came about when the local community in Oxnard fought against having a new gas-powered peaker plant to help respond to the energy demand during peak times.

Instead, they settled on a proposal from Arevon Asset Management (Arevon), a renewable energy company, to deploy a massive 100 megawatt/400 megawatt-hour battery system to help power the peak energy demand.

The community was about to get a polluting gas power plant near the beach, and instead, they now have one of the largest energy storage sites in US, and it was deployed in just nine months.

They are using 142 Tesla Megapacks, the automaker’s largest energy storage solution (pictured above).

Carmen Ramirez, Ventura County District 5 Supervisor, commented on the project:

“Saying no to a gas peaker plant and yes to battery-stored energy has provided our community with a nonpolluting power plant, increased our tax base, and created good jobs and ultimately better health for the people. This project is truly a testament to Oxnard’s determination and resilience to modernize and better our community.”

The Tesla Megapacks receive electricity from Southern California Edison (SCE) under the terms of a 20-year purchase and sale agreement.

It releases the electricity back into the grid during peak demand times when it’s most valuable as it avoids using gas peaker plants.

The battery system also helps reduce grid outages.

It can virtually power Oxnard for four hours or all of Ventura County for 30 minutes.

John Breckenridge, head of Clean Energy Infrastructure at Capital Dynamics, a company that was part of the project, commented:

“On hot days when the grid is struggling to keep up, the Saticoy battery storage facility will help keep the lights on and air conditioners running with on-demand, local electricity. We’re proud to have worked with Arevon, our asset management affiliate; Strata Clean Energy; the county; and local utility Southern California Edison to improve grid reliability.”

They chose the Tesla Megapack, which has rapidly become a very popular battery system to deliver large energy storage projects like this one.

It helped Tesla’s energy storage deployment, which also includes Powerwalls and Powerpacks, grow to a record 3 GWh in 2020.

Tesla Megapack battery in Victoria catches fire while testing, no injuries reported

A Tesla Megapack battery unit has caught fire while being tested at the newly registered Victoria Big Battery. The massive energy storage installation is located at Moorabool in the state of Victoria, Australia.

The Tesla Megapack battery farm, when completed, will be a 300MW/450MWh installation, making it one of the largest batteries in Australia to date. Similar to the Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia, which uses Tesla’s smaller Powerpack batteries, Neoen Australia owns the Victoria Megapack farm.

Bedrijf in Antwerpse haven slaat energie op in Tesla-megabatterij: “Minder afhankelijk van dure stroom”

Beveren - Een thuisbatterij is bij talloze huishoudens intussen al een feit, maar in de Antwerpse haven heeft Luik Natie Cold Store sinds kort de eerste Tesla Megapack. Samen met hun windmolen en een hoop zonnepanelen wordt het bedrijf van Stefaan Verhelst zo een stuk onafhankelijker van het net. “We worden zo het eerste CO2-neutrale logistiek bedrijf in de Antwerpse haven, dit op en economisch duurzame manier.”

Elon Musk is een klein beetje meer aanwezig in de Antwerpse haven. Elektriciteitsbedrijf Engie installeerde zopas een zogeheten Tesla Mega Pack van 1.250 kilowattuur , dat is ongeveer evenveel als in 3.125 gemiddelde fietsbatterijen zitten.

Luik Natie heeft op de linkeroever in de Antwerpse haven een site met grote koel- en vriesopslag. Daar worden onder meer aardbeien, aardappelen, bananen en mango’s bewaard. De laatste jaren installeerde het bedrijf al een windmolen (in 2015) en intussen ook 6.000 vierkante meter aan zonnepanelen. Daar is nu een uit de kluiten gewassen batterij bijgekomen.

Overschotten

Alles is aangesloten op één energiebeheersysteem. De batterij slaat overschotten van zonne- en windenergie op die kan gebruikt worden op momenten met een hoger verbruik. Het bedrijf heeft ook extra zekerheid bij stroomstoringen. Door meer lokaal en duurzaam opgewerkte elektriciteit te gebruiken, daalt ook de CO2-uitstoot met 575 ton, volgens Engie-CEO Thierry Saegeman bij Luik Natie.

“Zaten we voordien op 70% eigen verbruik en 30% van het net, dan gaan we nu naar 80 tot 85%”, zegt Stefaan Verhelst, CEO van Luik Natie. “Met de stijgende energieprijzen kan dit misschien ook anderen aanzetten om voor zo’n batterij te kiezen. Onze klanten vragen ons ook steeds meer om CO2-neutrale dienstverlening en die kunnen we zo aanbieden.”

900.000 euro

De batterij, die nog tien jaar eigendom blijft van Engie, kost ongeveer 900.000 euro, al voorzag Vlaanderen in een subsidie van 167.000 euro. “Na mooie woorden over het klimaat, moeten ook daden volgen, zoals hier vandaag”, zegt Demir. “De omslag naar hernieuwbare energie kan maar structureel als we ook voldoende sterke batterijen hebben. Dit is de manier om het net te ontlasten en om zelf een lagere factuur in de bus te krijgen.”

maar 1,25 MWh opslag? een Megapack heeft >3 MWh opslag volgens de specs van Tesla zelf en kan bijna 1 MW leveren 4 uur lang.

In elk geval is de krant verkeerd, of ze moeten uur weglaten en dus geleverd vermogen 1250 kW, dan kan het ook kloppen.
