Goed nieuws van WHO: tientallen vaccins tegen coronavirus in de maak

Er zijn wereldwijd maar liefst zeventig vaccins tegen het nieuwe coronavirus in ontwikkeling. Drie ondernemingen zijn ook al bezig met klinisch onderzoek met proefpersonen. Dat blijkt uit een document van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO).

Volgens persbureau Bloomberg blijkt uit het document dat CanSino Biologics uit Hongkong het verst gevorderd is in het ontwikkelingsproces voor het vaccin. Het werkt daarvoor samen met het Beijing Institute of Biotechnology. Er zijn ook al twee Amerikaanse bedrijven begonnen met klinisch onderzoek. Het gaat om Moderna en Inovio Pharmaceuticals.

Daarnaast proberen volgens het WHO-document ook farmareuzen als Pfizer en Sanofi een vaccin tot stand te brengen. Ook bij Janssen Pharmaceutica, een dochteronderneming van Johnson & Johnson, wordt aan een vaccin gewerkt. Daar viel eerder te horen dat men uiterlijk in september zou starten met fase 1 van de klinische studies op mensen.

Het duurt normaal gezien tien tot vijftien jaar om een nieuw vaccin op de markt te brengen. Maar de farmaceutische bedrijven hebben de snelheid gevoelig opgedreven. Om tijd te winnen worden bijvoorbeeld de gebruikelijke dierproeven overgeslagen.

Tesla krijgt een upgrade van Credit Suisse.

Hun analyst Levy meent dat Tesla beter gewapend is om de coronacrisis "te verwerken", klassieke constructeurs met hun wereldwijd talrijke fabrieken en werknemers gaan het daar extra zwaar hebben naar de geleidelijke electrificatie van hun wagenpark. Naja niets nieuws eigenlijk, behalve dat de pandemie hun extra centen gaat kosten...

Credit Suisse analyst Dan Levy ended his bearish call on Tesla Inc. shares TSLA, +13.60% Tuesday, arguing that the company becomes "competitively better positioned" due to the disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak. He upgraded the stock to neutral from underperform while upping his target price to $580 from $415. Tesla now "competitively has more edge in the transition to EV as coronavirus disruption will make it more difficult for legacy automakers to balance the long-term shift to EV in the face of near-term cycle disruption," Levy wrote. Traditional car companies must make "tough choices in product investment." Still, Levy questions whether Tesla will be able to ramp up supply and he estimates that the shutdown of the company's Fremont factory could be driving $300 million a week in cash burn. The shares are up more than 7% in premarket trading Tuesday. They've increased 56% so far this year as the S&P 500 SPX, -1.01% has lost 15%.

Tesla’s (TSLA) stock price keeps climbing this morning as the automaker seeks to renegotiate its rent rates based on emails sent to its landlords.
As we reported yesterday, Tesla’s stock has been recovering extremely well from its drop following the broader market correction triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Tesla’s stock is surging again today; it’s up more than 30% over the last two days.

The surge is occurring as we learn that Missouri offered $1 billion in incentives in a formal bid for Tesla’s Cybertruck Gigafactory.

Even if the plant doesn’t end up in Missouri, it bodes well for Tesla’s effort to secure an important incentive package for the new factory.

Also, we learn that Tesla is trying to renegotiate its rent at some locations in a new cost-cutting effort amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As we previously reported, Tesla was forced to close many stores due to shelter-in-place orders across the world, and it recently furloughed a majority of its sales force.

Tesla still has to pay rent on those locations even though it can’t use them right now.

The Wall Street Journal obtained an email that Tesla has sent to landlords in which the automakers says it intends to reduce its rent:

The rapid world pandemic that is now affecting our country has led Tesla to make strategic decisions to ensure the company’s long term success and growth. As a result of the increasing restrictions on our ability to conduct business, we would like to inform you that we will be reducing our monthly rent obligations effective immediately.

The company says that it wants to discuss other options “so we can continue to partner and work together to ensure a continued and mutually beneficial relationship.”

As of now, Tesla is still taking new orders online and its service division is still working, but the automaker will have limited operations until it can reopen its Fremont Factory, which it currently aims to do on May 4 after the local shelter-in-place order is set to be lifted.

Tesla’s (TSLA) stock surged by as much as 10% this morning despite a broader market pullback amid the developing coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s what we think is happening.

The market saw a broad correction over the last month as the coronavirus pandemic has been worsening in several countries, especially in the US.

The S&P 500 crashed more than 30% since February before erasing some of the losses over the last 2 weeks.

Tesla also took a big dive, which was accentuated by the fact that the automaker’s stock was on a several month run that pushed its value to twice as much as its previous all-time high right before the coronavirus crisis.

However, the stock has been recovering at an impressive pace and it’s now up more than 30% since the low of last month:

This morning, Tesla’s stock surged by as much as 10% while the rest of the market was down by more than 1%.

It isn’t clear what prompted such movement in Tesla’s stock, but with the market being closed for a few days, there was a series of news that came out in the last few days that could have helped the stock:

- Tesla launches discontinued Model 3 Long Range RWD as made-in-China car

Tesla TSLA, +2.80% has had the best one-year performance, by far, among stocks listed here, as it rocketed 56% over seven sessions (and appeared on track for an eighth straight gain). It’s been on a Note that it’s not an S&P 500 component. The shares were upgraded by Credit Suisse on April 14 and were rated a buy by Goldman Sachs on April 15..

Batterijpacks "onverslijtbaar"?

Tesla gaat zijn "nieuwe batterijcelchemie" nu laten patenteren, de nex generation NMC 532 single cristal kathode en "advanced electrolyte" (hopelijk nog veiliger)

Levensduur 4000 volledige laadcycles, ttz aan pakweg 400 km gereden *4000 = 1,6 miljoen kilometers.

Levensduur betekend bij een batterijpack 20% degradatie of 80% restcapaciteit.

Tesla blijft dus bij NCA maar heeft vooral de duurzaamheid pakweg verdrievoudigd (zie ook oude draad over Jeff Dahn of oude bron: https://www.bright.nl/nieuws/artikel...ter-tesla-accu ).

De energiedichtheid zal niet veel verbeterd zijn, vergelijkbaar of iets beter dan de beste NMC van vandaag.

Tesla patents a new electrode for its 1-million-mile battery

Tesla patents a new NCA electrode that is likely going to be used in its new battery cell built in-house, which is expected to be longer-lasting and cheaper.
We previously reported on Tesla’s battery research partner, Jeff Dahn and his team at Dalhousie University, unveiling the impressive results of tests on a new battery cell that could last over 1 million miles in an electric vehicle.

The new battery tested is a Li-ion battery cell with a next-generation “single crystal” NMC 532 cathode and a new advanced electrolyte, which they patented.

They were able to show over 4,000 cycles in the battery cells made with the novel cathode.

Now Tesla is patenting “single crystal” NCA electrodes as disclosed in a recently published patent application called “Method for Synthesizing Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Electrodes.”

New studies by the inventors have identified a two-step synthesis process for preparing single crystal nickel-cobalt-aluminum electrodes. In certain embodiments, the two step synthesis process includes two lithiation steps. In the first lithiation step, in order to avoid forming Li5Al04 at high sintering temperature, precursors with Li/OM ratios of less than 1.0 (e.g. Li/OM=0.6, 0.8, 0.9, 0.95) are lithiated at higher sintering temperature, such as 800°C to 950°C. This sintering step might take between 1 hour to 24 hours depending on the temperature selected, the furnace configuration used and the final crystallite size desired. In the first lithiation step, Li(i-X)[Nio.88Coo.o9Alo.o3](i+x)02 is obtained. In the second lithiation step, in order to compensate for the lithium deficiency, the material is sintered with more LiOHTUO at standard NCA lithiation temperature (approximately 650 to 760°C) for approximately 12 hours. This sintering step might take between 1 hour to 24 hours depending on the temperature selected and the furnace configuration used. The amount of added LiOHTLO in the second lithiation step is determined by overall target of the Li/OM ratio in the final product. In some embodiments, in the first lithiation step if a Li/OM ratio of “b” is selected, then in the second lithiation step a further additional Li/OM ratio of“1.0 -b,”“1.01 – b”,“1.02 – b”, 1.03 – b”, etc. is selected depending on the amount of lithium loss anticipated in both the first and second lithiation steps. In other words, the sum of the Li/OM ratio in the first lithiation step and the Li/OM ratio in the second lithiation step is 1.0, 1.01, 1.02, or 1.03. In some embodiments, the goal is to make a final product with a Li/OM ratio very near 1.00 and with very little Ni atoms in the Li layer of the material (less than 2%).

A source familiar with the matter told Electrek that the new electrodes are likely to enable Tesla to achieve similar or better energy density than NMC batteries.

Hongyang Li and Jing Li, Tesla battery engineers and students of Dahn, as well as Dahn himself, are listed as inventors on the new Tesla patent.

They are also all listed on previous research related to Tesla’s latest advancement in battery tech by the group: here and here.

As we previously reported, Electrek revealed that Tesla is working on an internal secret Roadrunner project.

The goal is for Tesla to produce its own battery cells using technologies developed by Tesla’s internal teams, including work from Dahn’s team, and new technologies recently acquired through the acquisition of Maxwell, on a massive scale and at a cost below $100 per kWh.

Tesla has already tested prototype cells under the Roadrunner secret project. It believes it can produce the cells in volume and use them in its vehicles and eventually in its stationary energy storage products.

The automaker has been developing manufacturing equipment in secrecy, like the pilot production line in Fremont, over the last few months.

We expect to learn more about the project and Tesla’s new battery cell at the company’s next talk, which is now supposed to happen in May.

Ik houd mijn hart vast voor de kwartaalcijfers. Ik vrees dat hij een wit konijn uit zijn hoed gaat toveren om toch onverwachts een winst groter dan $160m voor te stellen (om in de S&P te komen en zijn bonus op te strijken).

In de eerste plaats omwille van de $60m uitkering van de verzekering (settlement tegen de rechtszaak tegen de BoD inzake SCTY) wat op de lijn van other income komt te staan.

Ik verwacht ook een een stevige brok van deferred revenue dat gaat geboekt worden (AP/FSD en internet connectivity).

En China is al helemaal een rookgordijn wat betreft sales within arm-lengths (channel stuffing).

Tesla (TSLA) releases Q1 2020 results: suprises with some profit

We are updating this post with all the details from the financial results, shareholders letter, and the conference call later tonight.

As we reported in our Q1 earnings preview post yesterday, Wall Street was expecting revenue of about $6.113 billion for the quarter and a loss of $0.32 per share.

This quarter, expectations were kind of all over the place due to the impact of the pandemic, but Tesla still announcing strong deliveries.

Today, the automaker announced that it made $5,985 billion in revenue and it reported a small profit of $0.09 per share (Non-GAAP) in Q 2020 – virtually meeting expectations for revenue and beating expectations for earnings.
