Tesla’s price war could reshape the Chinese auto industry, and some players may not survive

It remains to be seen if Tesla was aware that its aggressive pricing strategy would create havoc in the Chinese auto market. But it has, and analysts have noted that some of China’s weaker players may not survive the aftermath.

China is the world’s largest electric vehicle market. Thus, Tesla is fully aware of the country’s importance for its global operations. It was then no surprise that the electric vehicle maker implemented pricing adjustments for its domestically-made vehicles in October. This was followed up by more price cuts in January, which brought the costs of the Giga Shanghai-made Model 3 and Model Y up to 14% cheaper than last year and substantially cheaper than their counterparts from the US and Europe.

Rival automakers have lowered their prices in response to Tesla’s recent price cuts. Companies like Volkswagen AG and Mercedes-Benz Group AG are offering discounts of up to 70,000 yuan ($10,000) in China. Ford has also lowered the Mach-E’s starting price to about 209,900 yuan. This left competitors like Xpeng Inc. and Nio Inc. with little choice but to follow suit.

As noted in a Bloomberg News reports, at least 30 automakers have cut prices in China. Jochen Siebert, managing director of JSC Automotive, for his part, noted that Tesla’s pricing strategy affected the Chinese auto segment. “Tesla created havoc for the rest of the market,” Siebert said.

The havoc caused by Tesla has not gone unnoticed. On Wednesday, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers urged an end to the price war. The CAAM noted that the price war was not a long-term solution to the country’s current slowdown in sales and inventory accumulation. The association also stressed the need for the industry to “return to normal operation” to ensure healthy development.

Other automakers are preparing for more challenging months ahead. During an interview with Bloomberg Television on Wednesday, Nio Chief Financial Officer Steven Feng noted that China’s auto industry is going through a “very profound shuffle.” “We need to go through this price war at the beginning of the year, and then we expect the industry to go through some profound fundamental consolidation. It’s almost consensus that China now has too many automakers,” the executive said.

China’s auto sector is extremely competitive, with 155 new battery electric and plug in hybrid vehicles set to be unveiled this year alone. In response to this, financially stronger players such as Tesla could easily maintain, if not escalate, their aggressive pricing strategies to protect and grow their market share. Other automakers, however, may not be as fortunate. Siebert noted that Tesla has “several billion dollars that they can use for this purpose while others don’t.”

Morgan Stanley analysts have noted that apart from Tesla, BYD should also be capable of carrying out another round of price cuts. The analysts stated that Tesla’s price war came on faster and more severely than expected, and they also noted that it will “expedite a market reshuffle.” Tu Le, managing director of consultancy Sino Auto Insights, highlighted this in a statement. “It’s going to stay brutal through mid-2024. It’s really existential for some of the weaker players,” the executive said.

In elk geval is het gemiddeld dagrecord al 44 stuks hoger dan in het vorig recordkwartaal (q4-2022).

The U.S. EV maker's retail sales in China totaled 106,915 units from Jan. 1 to March 19, or 1,371 units per day on average, according to data from China Merchants Bank International, which tracks car insurance registrations.

That was slightly higher than the 1,327 units it sold daily on average in the fourth quarter in China, when Tesla sold a total of 122,038 cars, its best quarter so far, the data showed.

En vorige week werd er zelfs 18.712 verzekerd of een gemiddelde van 18.712/7 dagen of 2.673 per dag.

Niet iedereen kan zomaar de prijzen fors verlagen. (zeker de kleinste spelers niet)

De trend van Tesla lijkt gezet men ziet het aan de verkoop vanaf einde februari - begin maart (de laatste boten naar Europa zijn dan net weg)

Grootste thuisspeler BYD en Tesla (en Tesla nadert), zie grafiek (Tesla = groen, BYD = oranje) (van BYD zijn er enkel cijfers van de laatste 6 weken).
Januari zegt sowieso niet veel of weinig, toen waren er ook nog coronamaatregelen en 8 dagen nieuwjaarsverlof., de meeste MIC-productie gaat dan naar het buitenland

Indien Tesla Berlijn hun productie kan verdubbelen gaat Tesla Shangai nog meer wagens in China zelf verkopen.
Tesla zal dan geld sparen aan zee-transportkosten, vooral naar het verre Europa.

China weekly BEV insurance data for Tesla, BYD, NIO, XPeng and Zeerk. I can see a trend.
The BYD data is only BEV and actual only available for the last 6 weeks.

Het is inderdaad NU dat Tesla zijn oorlog dient te voeren,niet alleen tegen de Chinese concurrentie maar vooral tegen de "bekende grote wereldmerken"...

Deze laatsten zijn zowat allemaal op hun periode van "maximale kosten zonder winsten" in hun EV-business gekomen en bovendien is door allerlei (overheids-)maatregelen hun vroegere markt,de ICE-markt ,zeer fragiel,uitgerekend in hun thuismarkten ook....

NU,nu ze(de bekende autofabrikanten) blijkbaar ook niet zomaar het oor meer hebben van de politiek in hun thuislanden, kan de dolk gestoken worden om te verhinderen dat ze Tesla door puur economisch overgewicht en lobbywerk verhinderen een echt grote fabrikant te worden..

Tesla produceert momenteel aan een tempo van 2,2 miljoen wagens per jaar.

Behalve Fremont gaan de andere 3 fabrieken hun productie nog verder verhogen.
Berlin en Austin hebben beide verleden week de 5k /week gehaald, dit ongeveer 1 jaar na productiebegin, die gaan naar >500k/jaar.

Hé @elonmusk Ik liet mijn tiener en kleine in de auto achter om naar de winkel te gaan. De auto ging meteen uit en mijn oudste moest het scherm aanraken om hem weer aan te zetten. Als er een baby achterbleef, stopte de auto. Kunnen jullie iets doen om mensen in de auto te detecteren en de temperatuur op peil te houden?

De temperatuur van de Tesla-auto wordt automatisch binnen een veilig bereik gehouden, zelfs wanneer de auto "uit" lijkt, om baby's en huisdieren te beschermen.

Dat gezegd hebbende, zou het handiger zijn om de auto "aan" te houden voor entertainment en comfort als de camera inzittenden detecteert. Die wijziging gaan we doorvoeren.

Hey @elonmusk I left my teenager and little in the car to go into the store. The car instantly shut off and my oldest had to touch the screen to turn it back on. If an infant was left, the car would shut down. Can y’all do something to detect people in the car and keep temp on?

Tesla car temp is automatically kept within a safe range, even when the car appears “off”, in order to protect infants & pets.

That said, it would be more convenient to keep the car “on” for entertainment & comfort if the camera detects occupants. We will make that change.
