ABOUT TAFFY, THE WORLD’S FASTEST RACING COW EAST LANSING, Mich. -- By now it’s old news. A 3-year-old cow named Taffy, ridden by Michigan State University horse expert Brian Nielsen, won the first-ever cow race at the Gratiot Ag Expo in Ithaca June 21. Taffy entered the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s fastest cow. That’s been in the newspapers, all over the media coast to coast, even on Comedy Central on cable television. But here are some details -- the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey might say. Taffy attended Michigan State University. She graduated after her research project ended. Animal science graduate student Jill Davidson had Taffy on an experiment using a treadmill to find out how dairy cows given exercise perform after calving. Yep, Taffy’s a mom. She had her calf but developed mastitis, an udder inflammation, and was dried off. So she didn’t need to wear a sports bra for the event. “She didn’t have much of an udder,” said MSU dairy scientist Mariam Weber. “That may have given her an advantage in the race.” Brian Nielsen is not a cow person by choice. He has done extensive research on horses and the effect of exercise on bone strength and a horse’s ability to perform without being injured. He knows a ton about racehorses. “Lack of exercise can be quite detrimental,” he said. Recently, he received funding from the Revitalization of Animal Agriculture in Michigan Initiative to study the effect of exercise on calves. He will compare confined animals with those forced to sprint every day and those housed so they can choose their own level of exercise. But back to Taffy. After finding out on the Internet about a cow race being planned in Ithaca, he ecided to enter. “I bought her as the best candidate for racing,” Nielsen said. “My students heard I was in the market for a race animal of the bovine persuasion and they recommended Taffy, since she had looked so good in the treadmill work.” He fitted Taffy with an English-style racing saddle and a bridle and trained her to ride. She trained a mile each day. With his knowledge of animals and experience as a racehorse rider, Nielsen had a good shot at winning. “A cow makes a nice riding animal, really,” he insists. “The only difference between a cow and a horse is about 45 miles per hour.” Cows easily bear the weight of saddle and rider. On race day, Taffy did the two laps around the half-mile track in 8 minutes, 55.4 seconds. She led the other five entries most of the way. “One cow passed us at a lope, but she’d lost her rider,” Nielsen said. “We knew she couldn’t keep up the pace. Cows make the maximum use of oxygen at a trot. At a lope, they get out of breath quickly. A cow is an endurance animal, not a sprinter.” Taffy won $1,000 and, as happens with many great racing animals, she was turned out to pasture at the Nielsen farm near Mason. But retirement? It’s premature to talk of it. What might the opportunities be for milk promotion, perhaps tied in with Nike or Stairmaster? Could there be an exercise video? Is there a place in the world for dual-purpose animals that race and give milk, too? A dynasty could be in the making. "Taffy has a home for life at my place," Nielsen said. But he'd sell for the right price. “I don’t intend to get into twice a day milking,” he said. Pete Ondrus, a former dairy farmer from Carson City, conceived the idea for the cow race. “Actually, I thought of it 15 years ago when I was on the Gratiot County Board of Commissioners and we were looking for a way to bring more revenue for our fair. Everybody laughed.” Early this year he decided to try again. He and wife Barb created the Mid-Michigan Cow Racing Association and put it on a Web site, www.cowrace.com. One bit of sour milk: the farm press didn’t see a story in it, and he got no response there. He sent more than 200 letters seeking dairy industry sponsors and publicity. Ultimately, the couple put up $2,000 of their own money to make a purse for the race. Others saw the humor. Comedy Central called, the hosts came to Carson City and rode a cow. By race day, nearly 600 people came to watch, and there were lots of reporters. “We’re not done with this,” Ondrus said. “Cows are already in training for the race next year.” He’s locked up rights to conduct races sanctioned by Guinness. The rules are in place. “No cows with horns are allowed,” he said. “The cow must be saddled and the riders have to wear helmets.” Nor is MSU done with animal exercise. One cow broke loose before the Ithaca race, jumped a fence and did her aerobics in the parking lot. She came in second. The future looks bright for exercised animals. |
