Natural gas in vehicles – on the road to nowhere

In February 2016, the European Commission released a proposal to guarantee its gas supply security and is preparing another one to implement the EU’s 2030 climate targets for the transport, buildings and agriculture sectors. It is also developing a communication to decarbonise the road transport sector, to be announced this summer. To understand what role natural gas could have in achieving these objectives, T&E commissioned a study from Ricardo Energy & Environment to assess the impacts of large-scale use of natural gas in the transport sector.

As T&E's briefings (downloadable below) explain, the study concludes that the increased use of natural gas in road transport is largely ineffective in reducing greenhouse gases or air pollution. The immediate benefits are small or non-existent; while the environmental costs, societal costs and costs to operators are negative for almost all vehicle categories.

While the study also finds clear air pollution advantages from using LNG in the shipping sector, its GHG emissions benefits are highly dependent on methane slip at the production, distribution and operational levels. LNG ships also incur higher infrastructure and capital costs.

Natural gas is not a ‘bridge fuel’, as claimed, but an expensive dead-end on the pathway to decarbonising transport.

Italië is nu ook wel de kleine uitzondering dat de regel bevestigt dat CNG-LPG enz... nooit echt zullen doorbreken.

Uiteraard is dat in de regel enkel voor personenwagens.

De CNG-wagens in Italië kennen overigens een sterk dalende verkoop van -27,1 %. Blijkbaar nemen electrische en hybride wagens hun plaats in, ook LPG is nog populair.

Sempre forti infine le ibride che nel mese di novembre raddoppiano quasi le vendite, passando dalle 3.549 del 2016 alle 6.763 del 2017 (+90,6%), e recuperano quasi 2 punti percentuali di rappresentativit?*. In linea con lo scorso novembre 2016, infine, il metano che, però, accusa ancora molto le flessioni dei mesi precedenti e registra nel cumulato un -27,1%.

Toon eens de duizenden Italianen die dat thuis hebben geinstalleerd. Ik wacht.

En btw lees je wel die link? 1 uur voor 15 km te rijden? Tja dat is dus fantasie...
Met een simpele 11 kW laadstekker thuis laad je in 1 uur bij om 60-80 km electrisch te rijden. En geluidloos bijladen.

De Phill is een vulinstallatie voor aardgasvoertuigen die speciaal ontworpen is om onder huiselijke omstandigheden uit de normale gasleiding aardgas te tanken.

PHILL CNG VULINSTALLATIE IN DE PRAKTIJK
Dat betekent in de praktijk dat voor elk uur een voertuig aan een installatie aangesloten is deze 15 km kan rijden.
