Bush over het milieu

Ondanks de grote aandacht voor Bush' oorlogszuchtigheid, vestig ik toch even de aandacht op de passage over het milieu in zijn State of the Union. Hierin besteedde hij speciaal aandacht aan de ontwikkeling van
de pollutievrije wagen op waterstof(gas).
Een klein zoektochtje in Google, 'auto's op waterstof hydrogen', levert al gelijk een aantal interessante links en vertelt mij dat velen de doorbraak hiervan voorzien rond 2010.

Tonight I am proposing $1.2bn in research funding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen-powered automobiles.
A simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen generates energy, which can be used to power a car - producing only water, not exhaust fumes.
With a new national commitment, our scientists and engineers will overcome obstacles to taking these cars from laboratory to showroom - so that the first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen, and pollution-free.
Join me in this important innovation - to make our air significantly cleaner, and our country much less dependent on foreign sources of energy."

Een alternatieve energiebron betekent misschien het begin van onafhankelijkheid ten aanzien van de OPEC's.
Dan hoeft er geen oorlog tegen Iraq omwille van de olie meer.
Ik vrees dat de wapenlobby daar geen heil in zal zien.

BMW onder andere heeft al auto's op waterstofgas ontwikkeld die perfect werkten. Het enigste probleem is natuurlijk dat je nog nergens waterstofgas kunt tanken. Die auto's konden trouwens ook overschakelen op gewone benzine.

Kom nog wat klagen over Kyoto waar nog geen enkel land zich aan houdt. VS is consequent geweest in zijn opzeggen van Kyoto en in het uitwerken van een alternatief.
