Tesla hires two Canadian interns as ‘professional problem solvers’ after they impressed Elon Musk

Fred Lambert

- May. 16th 2018

While we expect more departures from Tesla in the next few weeks amid the company’s reorganization announced earlier this week, the automaker is still hiring for the Model 3 ramp and future product programs.

We now learn of a good example of it as Musk apparently personally hired two Canadian interns as ‘professional problem solvers’ after they impressed him.

Mark Comeau (left), a CNA engineering grad and Matthew Lane (right), a MUN engineering student, both from Newfoundland, Canada, ended up working together as interns in the manufacturing team at Tesla.

They were going back and forth between Tesla’s Fremont factory and Gigafactory 1 in Nevada to help the Model 3 production ramp.

During the internship, Lane and Comeau saw a problem with the gating system on one of the production lines at Gigafactory 1.

They decided to take it upon themselves to fix it. Lane told CBC Radio:

“Essentially what happened is we saw an opportunity to solve the problem, we came up with our own idea and actually sort of crashed the meeting with Elon ourselves and presented the idea,”

It took them about 6 weeks to implement their solution and then they were sent to another project.

Comeau said:

“Literally at like 10 a.m. Monday the week we finished, we got a message saying, ‘Hey, head to Nevada to Gigafactory. [A] five hour car drive later, we arrived in Nevada with a whole new situation and problems to address.”

They apparently managed to solve the issue in just two days, which led them to meet Musk again.

Lane said:

“Within two days we had solved this issue and got to speak to Elon himself, and this is kind of where he said, ‘You guys did a good job, and you should stay,'”

Comeau added:

“It was probably one of the most unnerving experiences ever. Here’s the CEO of a company and we’re just two young interns, and he was like basically, ‘Yup, you guys have to stay,'”

They said that they were offered jobs as professional problem solvers in Tesla’s manufacturing team.

Comeau is starting his official position right away, while Lane will be joining after his summer semester at MUN.

As we previously reported, Tesla is currently trying to hire workers at a pace of 400 per week in order to ramp up Model 3 production.

They are trying to find some novel solutions to fix issues with the production ramp. For example, Musk sais that Tesla held a hackathon to fix two problematic robot bottlenecks in Model 3 production last weekend.

Yesterday, the CEO said that Tesla is ‘likely to exceed’ 500 Model 3 vehicles per day this week as it attempts to get to 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of the quarter.

https://electrek.co/2018/05/15/tesla...bution-report/

A Tesla spokesperson said about the report:

“As one of the largest manufacturers in the California, and the only remaining car manufacturer, 2017 saw Tesla generate more than $5 billion in economic activity within the state. We remain focused on trying to make a positive difference in California as we work to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy.”

According to the report, the bulk of Tesla’s impact in California has been in Alameda County, Santa Clara County, Los Angeles County, the City of Fremont, and San Mateo County.

The company has 150 manufacturing facilities, warehouses and administrative buildings across California and it operates 172 Supercharger stations, and 38 Tesla sales and service centers – with a total staff of 20,189 people.

Here are additional key findings for 2017 from the report:

Employment and Wages

Tesla’s operations supported over 51,000 jobs in California. Tesla directly employed 20,189 workers while another 31,424 were ultimately supported by Tesla’s local supply chain purchases and its employees’ consumer activity. Thus, for every Tesla employee, another 1.5 jobs were supported in California.
Tesla paid its employees a total of $2.1 billion in wages and equity in FY2017. Every employee is given equity upon hire.

Sales Activity and Value Added

Tesla infused approximately $4.1 billion into the California economy: $2.0 billion in transactions with over 2,650 California Tier 1 suppliers (average spending of just over $750K per supplier); plus, Tesla paid $2.1 billion in wages and equity to its California-based employees.

Tesla’s operations directly contributed an estimated $2.0 billion to California’s gross state product (GSP) in 2017. The GSP contribution grew to $5.1 billion when the Tier 1, Extended Supply Chain and Induced effects are included.
Tesla ultimately drove a total of $5.5 billion in sales activity across California. Approximately 1/3 of the sales activity was stimulated by the spending of Tesla’s employees. We estimate that Tesla employees spent about 77% of their wages and equity on consumer purchases. Much of the spending remained in the local economies, ultimately stimulating $1.9 million of sales activity.

Every dollar Tesla spent with suppliers generated $0.8 dollars in additional spending throughout the California economy.

Every dollar that Tesla paid to its California employees led to $0.9 dollars in consumer spending across the state.

Government Revenues

Tesla’s direct payments to state and local tax authorities in California totaled $328 million.
The Tier 1, Extended Supply Chain and Induced consumer actives stimulated by Tesla generated close to $345 million in California state and local taxes plus over $452 in federal taxes.

Here’s the full report: (......)

Electrek’s Take

The report itself is interesting, but I never had any doubt that Tesla had a major economic impact in California.

What I am most interested in is why Tesla ordered that report and why it did it now.

If I had to make an educated guess, I would say that this report would have a lot of value when negotiating a state incentive deal for a new manufacturing facility, which Tesla has apparently been looking for in order to bring the Model Y to market.

There’s nothing that was indicating that Tesla would try to get another factory in California since it would make sense for them to spread out more geographically at some point, but the company has reportedly been interested in a huge parcel of land in Oakland earlier this year.

When Tesla bought the Fremont factory, it did get a good deal for the actual plant, but the company didn’t have a lot of leverage with the government.

It did when it was time to build the Gigafactory 1 and the company did get a somewhat good deal that could end up being worth about $1 billion over 20 years mostly in tax breaks from the state of Nevada.

But like the economic impact explained in this report, Tesla will have to contribute tens of billions to Nevada’s economy during those 20 years in order to take advantages of those tax breaks.

It’s why I can see this report as being useful for another similar deal.

What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.

‘Tesla pas in *2020 rendabel'

14 januari 2015

Tesla isn’t “losing” all of its executives — it just has a ton

By Christian Prenzler Posted on May 17, 2018

Over the past week, you’ve probably heard reports of Tesla “losing” executives, and while the reports are correct, the narrative is wrong. As Musk pushes the Model 3 production ramp forward, he’s also aiming to bring the company to profitability in the second half of the year. Shedding unnecessary positions on the executive level certainly seems to be part of this plan.

But with reports of “executives” leaving Tesla surfacing what feels like, everyday, it seems like the company is spiraling out of control. This is fundamentally incorrect because the media is highlighting any “senior” departure as a major loss and isn’t providing context to Tesla’s broader management structure.

First, reports of “key” people leaving Tesla now range from Vice Presidents, Product Directors, Managers, and Directors. But how are we determining people to be key? Bloomberg’s Dana Hull reported that Bob Rudd and Arch Padmanabhan left the company. Rudd and Padmanabhan’s positions were Senior Director and Director respectively. Padmanabhan had been at Tesla for 5 years, while Rudd joined SolarCity in 2012 at VP of Project Development for Energy Storage & Microgrids.

It’s unclear why Rudd and Padmanabhan have left the company, but it could be part of Musk’s broader company reorganization. On Monday, Musk sent out a memo to employees telling them, “To ensure that Tesla is well prepared for the future, we have been undertaking a thorough reorganization of our company.”

In addition to the company’s overall structure, Musk is aiming to rid a significant number of contract workers at the company. During Tesla’s Q1 2018 earnings call, Musk referred to contractors as “barnacles” stating that, “…we’re going to scrub the barnacles on that front.”

“It’s pretty crazy. We’ve got barnacles on barnacles. So there’s going to be a lot of barnacle removal.”

I could list dozens of executive departures at Tesla that were not previously reported in the past year, all senior to both Rudd and Padmanabhan, but I think it’s more important to provide perspective on the number of executives Tesla actually employs. After an in-depth analysis of LinkedIn data, I have found 23 active Vice Presidents at Tesla. There were far too many Directors and Senior Directors to conduct an accurate analysis.

Since the beginning of 2017, Tesla has lost 9 VPs and 3 other major executives (CAO, CFO, and President). Of the executives that left, their average tenure was 3.9 years — nearly a third less than existing VPs. Comparably, the VPs that are currently employed by Tesla hold an average tenure of 4.8 years.

Of the executives that have left since the start of 2017, only 4 had stayed at the company longer than 3 years, suggesting that their departures could have been related to culture clash (Chris Lattner) or a stepping stone to a C-Suite position at another company (Jon McNeill, Diarmuid O’Connell).

While it isn’t clear how exactly Tesla will be “restructured,” you can be certain that nearly all departures will be “high profile” as investors watch closely.

Tesla to Announce China Gigafactory Plans by Fourth Quarter, Musk Says

May 3 -- Tesla Inc. will announce the location of its China battery plant, or gigafactory, before the fourth quarter as it looks to manufacture locally in the world’s biggest auto market.

The production base will also build Tesla cars, Chinese news portal Sina reported, citing Chief Executive Elon Musk as saying in a conference call after releasing the firm’s first quarter financial report. The California-based company lost USD785 million over the period, up from USD330 million in the first quarter of 2017.

Chinese President Xi Jinping last month pledged to open up the nation’s auto sector, which sees more new-energy vehicle sales than any other country. One of the core measures behind the promise is to ditch rules that force foreign carmakers into setting up 50-50 joint ventures with local companies to build factories. The plan is to phase out the restriction by 2022, but for electric carmakers like Tesla, it hopes to shed the policy this year.

Reports surfaced last year suggesting Tesla had reached an agreement with the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and would build a plant there. Musk said at the time that the firm’s China plant would begin production in 2020 and produce hundreds of thousands of cars a year.

Of zoals Musk zei, gewoon dom:

'Domme vraag'
