“We all know and love NASA, and their achievements are legendary, but it’s a federal agency that inevitably has to abide by certain laws,” said Dale Ketcham, the chief of Strategic Alliances for Space Florida. “And innovation is not a term you associate with the federal government.”

By the time the Apollo program ended in 1972, the excitement of the space race had already subsided and NASA saw their share of the federal budget slowly begin to shrink with every passing year.

Once the Space Shuttle program came to a close in 2011, NASA no longer had a means of achieving low Earth orbit, forcing them to look to the private sector to help subsidize launches and keep their ambitions on track.

“It seemed blindingly obvious that getting into low Earth orbit didn’t need to be a government exercise anymore because we had been doing it for 50 years, and the Russians had been doing it even longer than that,” said Ketcham. “It was something that could be turned over to the private sector, which invariably can do almost anything faster and cheaper than the government.”

Enter SpaceX. After successfully docking their Dragon Capsule to the ISS in mid-2012, NASA awarded SpaceX a $1.6-billion, 12-trip contract to resupply the installation on a regular basis. While this funding was undoubtedly crucial to the survival of SpaceX, the deal was also beneficial to NASA as well.

“SpaceX helped NASA in the very beginning by pushing for fixed-price contracts to enable the federal government to change how it does business,” Ketcham said. “[This let NASA] pay for milestones of achievement, as opposed to the traditional cost-plus model, which helped keep costs down and enabled the private sector to assume substantially greater risk and invest their own capital."

"So, NASA was a big beneficiary of the change in that paradigm. Concurrently, SpaceX was successful in landing NASA contracts that infused federal money into their initiative, so it was a win-win for both parties.”

Via wiki, geschiedenis SpaceX:

Citaat:

China and Europe love SpaceX’s new Falcon Heavy rocket. Does NASA?

By Tim Fernholz February 19, 2018

Citaat:
https://thediplomat.com/2018/02/chin...heavy-success/

On Tuesday, in its first test flight, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched Falcon Heavy — one of the world’s most powerful rockets — from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

Along with millions around the world, Chinese people were deeply impressed by SpaceX’s victorious launch, particularly the company’s breathtaking reusable launch system.

Soon after two of Falcon Heavy’s booster rockets landed safely on the launch pad, news reports with photos and video footage swept Tencent Wechat and Sina Weibo — two of China’s most important social media platforms. Thousands of Chinese netizens reposted the information on their own social media accounts and applauded Musk’s great achievement.

However, China’s national media expressed mixed feelings about Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket.

For example, Global Times, one of China’s most nationalistic state-run newspapers, issued a series of articles on both its website and its social media account, introducing the launch in detail.

On the one hand, Global Times highly complimented SpaceX’s advanced technology, used in the latest launch, saying that the Falcon Heavy rocket has “totally crushed all other current rockets in the world.”

On the other hand, Global Times couldn’t help but attribute Musk’s feat to the United States as a whole and compare China’s space technology with that of the United States.

One of many Global Times’ articles on SpaceX wrote emotionally:

What really shocks us Chinese is not only that our country currently doesn’t have rockets of such magnitude, but the fact that we are almost 10 years behind; more importantly, what our country has to desperately catch up with is actually a private U.S. enterprise…

To put it more bluntly, this time the Americans showed us Chinese with pure power that why they are still the strongest country in the world and how wide the gap really is between us and them …

On February 7, Global Times even published an editorial in Chinese under the title of “The road for China to catch up with the United States on science and technology is still very very long.” Taking a rare tone, the editorial admitted China’s backwardness on technology and, at the same time, directly criticized some rising perceptions that “China has generally surpassed the United States as a whole.” However, the editorial didn’t forget to vow that China will take steps to improve its space technology.

Interestingly, the newspaper hasn’t translated this fairly balanced editorial (compared to its many other strongly worded editorials) into English so far.

China’s national TV station, CCTV, showed another interesting tendency in reporting the launch. CCTV focused most of its attention on the fact that the third booster of Falcon Heavy rocket failed to land on its launching pad on the sea, not the overall success of the launch.

While nationalism is deeply embedded in China’s national media reports, many Chinese citizens, impressed by Musk’s feat, reflected upon China’s problems from a totally different angle.

For example, one comment by an unknown Chinese netizen has been widely reposted. It reads:

The real difference [between China and the United States] is that Americans put this line “Made on Earth by humans” on Tesla’s engine … rather than “made in America.” The Tesla plays on loop “Space Oddity,” created by great British artist David Bowie in the 1970s, rather than the American national anthem. Inside the car lay a copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, known as the science fiction bible written by British writer Douglas Adams… What truly makes miracles come true is mankind’s spirit of exploration and adventure… rather than so-called national pride.

Why Did Google Invest $1 Billion in SpaceX?

https://www.fool.com/investing/gener...in-spacex.aspx

"Space-based applications like imaging satellites can help people more easily access important information, so we're excited to support SpaceX's growth as it develops new launch technologies," said Don Harrison, Google's vice president for corporate development, in a statement about the SpaceX investment, according to The New York Times.

And, notably, Harrison joined the board of SpaceX.

Based on Harrison's statement, the origins of the company's motivation for the investment was likely rooted in SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's announcement just before Google's investment. Musk noted SpaceX would set out to build and deploy the world's largest global communications systems via a network of hundreds of satellites.

"Our focus is on creating a global communications system that would be larger than anything that has been talked about to date," Musk told Bloomberg last year.

Alphabet may be more serious about space than it lets on
Before Alphabet was formalized last year, the company's projects like these were considered "moonshots." But with the creation of Alphabet in August, these "moonshots" were upgraded to "Other Bets" as the company structured its business in a way it can give more focus to these side projects.

You can bet that whatever satellite initiative Alphabet works on in regard to SpaceX, it's going to be one of the company's bigger bets. With 10% ownership of SpaceX in conjunction with Fidelity, the company arguably has a solid stake in what could become the most important space company in our lifetimes.

And it's worth noting that Alphabet's SpaceX investment has likely already panned out to be a bargain. Now that SpaceX has proved it can successfully land one of its rockets after returning from space, and with the rocket company now aiming for a 70% rocket landing success rate during 2016 and planning to launch its Falcon Heavy later this year, it probably sports a much greater valuation in the private markets than it did when Google invested in it early last year.

Time will tell what Alphabet makes of its SpaceX investment, but don't be surprised if it turns into something significant.

Een quote van Elon Musk in 2006:

bron New York Times, feb 2006 toen Musk $100 miljoen eigen geld bijlegde.

Citaat:
https://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/05/b...ne-before.html

In the commercial market, the United States' two big rocket giants, Lockheed Martin and Boeing, have been priced out by lower-cost competitors from Russia, Ukraine and France. Lockheed's Atlas 5 had only one commercial order in 2005, compared with 22 in 1998. Boeing has withdrawn its Delta 4 rocket from the commercial market and relies exclusively on business from the United States government.

At stake is a market that was worth $4 billion last year, when governments and businesses paid for 55 launchings, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Of those, 18 were commercial, with a value of $1 billion.

American companies compete for commercial orders only by teaming with foreign partners -- often former cold-war foes. Lockheed has teamed up with Khrunichev State Research of Russia to form International Launch Services, which mainly uses Russia's Proton rockets. Boeing has joined with several nations to form a consortium called the Sea Launch; it uses the Ukrainian Zenit 3SL to put up commercial payloads.

Mr. Musk says he wants to develop an all-American option that will be price-competitive and break the duopoly of Lockheed and Boeing on contracts with the federal government. Ultimately, he wants to send people into space, to the moon and beyond.

"We have to do something dramatic to reduce the cost of getting to space," said Mr. Musk in an interview in his cubicle at SpaceX's offices here. "If we can get the cost low, we can extend life to another planet.

SpaceX's first effort, the Falcon 1, will not put anyone on the moon. It is designed to send small satellites -- typically communications and scientific payloads weighing less than 1,000 pounds -- into low orbit, which is up to 300 miles above the Earth. The two-stage Falcon 1 is designed to be mostly recyclable, with part of it falling into the ocean to be picked up and used again.

The Falcon 1 will charge $6.9 million a launching. It is intended to go head to head with the Pegasus rocket made by the Orbital Sciences Corporation of Dulles, Va., which charges $25 million to $30 million for the same launching, as well as rockets from such newcomers as India and Israel.

Next up are the Falcon 5, the same rocket with five engines, and the Falcon 9, with nine engines. The Falcon 9 would bring SpaceX into direct competition with Boeing's Delta 4 and Lockheed's Atlas 5 in the so-called heavy-lift market, in which the United States government is the main customer. A Falcon 5 plans to launch 8,000-pound payloads for $18 million, a third of the price of competitors. The Falcon 9, which will put 10 tons of payload as far as 22,000 miles into the sky, will cost $27 million per launching. The same launching by Lockheed or Boeing would be about $70 million to $80 million.

Expecting that it can compete in this market, SpaceX has sued Boeing and Lockheed in federal court in California, seeking to prevent them from combining their rocket units in a joint venture called the United Launch Alliance, which would have a lock on $32 billion in Air Force launchings through 2011.

Citaat:
"SpaceX has the potential of saving the U.S. government $1 billion a year," Mr. Musk said. "We are opposed to creating an entrenched monopoly with no realistic means for anyone to compete."

US Defense contracts

In 2005, SpaceX announced that it had been awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract for Responsive Small Spacelift (RSS) launch services by the United States Air Force, which could allow the Air Force to purchase up to $100 million worth of launches from the company.[185] In April 2008, NASA announced that it had awarded an IDIQ Launch Services contract to SpaceX for up to $1 billion, depending on the number of missions awarded. The contract covers launch services ordered by June 2010, for launches through December 2012.[186] Musk stated in the same 2008 announcement that SpaceX has sold 14 contracts for flights on the various Falcon vehicles.[186] In December 2012, SpaceX announced its first two launch contracts with the United States Department of Defense. The United States Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center awarded SpaceX two EELV-class missions: Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) and Space Test Program 2 (STP-2). DSCOVR was launched on a Falcon 9 launch vehicle in 2015, while STP-2 will be launched on a Falcon Heavy in 2018.[187]

In May 2015, the United States Air Force announced that the Falcon 9 v1.1 was certified for launching "national security space missions," which allows SpaceX to contract launch services to the Air Force for any payloads classified under national security.[188] This broke the monopoly held since 2006 by ULA over the US Air Force launches of classified payloads.[189]

In April 2016, the U.S. Air Force awarded the first such national security launch, an $82.7 million contract to SpaceX to launch the 2nd GPS III satellite in May 2018; this estimated cost was approximately 40% less than the estimated cost for similar previous missions.[190][191][192] Prior to this, United Launch Alliance was the only provider certified to launch national security payloads.[193][193][194] ULA did not submit a bid for the May 2018 launch.[195][196]

In 2016 the US National Reconnaissance Office said it had purchased launches from SpaceX - the first (for NROL-76) took place on 1 May 2017.[197]

In March 2017 SpaceX won (vs ULA) with a bid of $96.5 million for the 3rd GPS III launch (due Feb 2019).[198]

In March 2018, SpaceX secured an additional $290 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to launch three next generation GPS satellites, known as GPS III. The first of these launches is expected to take place in March 2020.[199]

International contracts

Kazakhstan

SpaceX won a contract to launch two Kazakhstan's satellites aboard the Falcon 9 launch rocket on a rideshare with other satellites. The takeoff was scheduled for November 19, 2018. According to the Kazakh Defence and Aerospace Ministry, the launch from SpaceX would cost the country $1.3 million.[200] The two small satellites are named KazSaySat and KazistiSat.[201]

China has unveiled a scale model of new high-speed flight train that is expected to travel at 1,000 kms an hour by 2025, the state-run media reported on Friday.

China currently operates high speed bullet trains at the maximum speed of 350 kmph. It has been developing new bullet trains and researching on the next generation magnetic-levitation trains.

The scale model was exhibited at the 2018 National Mass Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week in the Chinese city of Chengdu in southwest Sichuan province on Wednesday.

The train which the State-owned China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited (CASIC) began developing in 2015 and dubbed as "T-Flight", will use an integrated, light and heat-proof cabin that is 29.2 meters long and three meters wide, the Global Times quoted a report of Chengdu Business daily as saying.
