Active lane-keeping

Engineers focused on two situations that challenge active lane-keeping systems — curves and hills — in tests on open roads with no other vehicles around. They also observed how the systems performed in traffic.

All five systems provide steering assistance that centers the vehicle within clearly marked lanes. They also may use a lead vehicle as a guide when traveling at lower speeds or when the lead vehicle is blocking the system's view of the lane markers ahead.

To test active lane-keeping on curves, engineers conducted six trials with each vehicle on three different sections of road with radii ranging from 1,300 to 2,000 feet.

Only the Model 3 stayed within the lane on all 18 trials.

Tesla earnings: The big question is how big is the quarterly loss

Tesla Inc. is expected to report first-quarter results on Wednesday, with Wall Street bracing for a loss following two quarters of profits and hoping for better news on production and demand.

Tesla TSLA, -0.05% reports after the bell and has scheduled a conference call with analysts for 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

The timing of the report is on the early side for Tesla, which typically reports its first-quarter numbers in early May, and it comes as the stock has been under pressure following a first-quarter delivery miss earlier this month.

It’s also scheduled to take place two days before an event aimed at showcasing Tesla’s autonomous driving capabilities.

Chief Executive Elon Musk already warned investors that Tesla is unlikely to report a profit this quarter, saying it could return to profitability in the second quarter.

“Our suspicion is that Q1 EPS could be an outright disaster, given that Tesla guided for a loss with an entire month left in the quarter, and its inherently high degree of operating leverage,” said Garrett Nelson, an analyst with CFRA.

Samsung is blijkbaar al langer bezig met het ontwikkelen van die "FSD-chips" voor Tesla.

De Korea Herald berichtte hiervan in december 2018 en dat deze chips in de loop van maart 2019 zouden afgeraken...

Samsung scouting talents for autonomous driving

Samsung on track to commercialize chips for self-driving cars starting with Tesla’s autonomous model slated for launch in March

A unit for autonomous driving solutions could be part of the System LSI Business of the Device Solutions division, according to industry watchers.

Samsung’s System LSI Business makes application processors and image sensors for automobiles.

In addition to hardware development, the business has recently supplemented it software development workforce with around 200 engineers transferred from the Semiconductor R&D Center.

The large-scale workforce transition could indicate Samsung’s commitment to the new automotive business, according to industry officials.

The repositioned workforce and newly hired talents are expected to work on the commercialization of new chips for advanced driver-assistance systems for global automakers.

Samsung is reportedly on track to start mass production of system-on-chips for Tesla’s Model 3 slated to be launched in March.

Tesla had been looking for a new chip supplier after accidents that led to several deaths of Tesla owners who were using its Autopilot tool. The chip for Autopilot was supplied by Intel’s Mobileye.

“Samsung’s strict principle for a new business is to secure a market leader customer in order to preoccupy the leadership,” an industry official said. “With the Tesla deal, Samsung is officially in in the autonomous driving market.”

Musk said that Tesla will start offering retrofits to current Tesla owners who bought the ‘Full Self-Driving package’ in the next few months.

Musk added that Samsung is producing the new Tesla-designed chip in Austin, Texas and he doesn’t expect any problem with supply.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the automaker is working on a new battery pack to come out next year which will last 1 million miles.
When talking about the economics of Tesla’s future fleet of robotaxis at the Tesla Autonomy Event yesterday, Musk emphasized that the vehicles need to be durable in order for the economics to work:

“The cars currently built are all designed for a million miles of operation. The drive unit is design, tested, and validated for 1 million miles of operation.”

But the CEO admitted that the battery packs are not built to last 1 million miles.

Just a week ago, Musk said that they built Model 3 to last as long as a commercial truck, a million miles, and the battery modules should last between 300,000 miles and 500,000 miles.

At the time, he also said that Tesla plans to provide battery module replacements.

Now, Musk added that there’s a new Tesla battery pack coming that will last as long as the rest of the vehicles:

“The new battery pack that is probably going to production next year is designed explicitly for 1 million miles of operation.”

The CEO said that they are optimizing every aspect of the cars, including the tires, in order to achieve minimal maintenance to create an “hyper-efficient” electric robotaxi.

Naja goed is dat niet echt. Ze gaan geen nieuwe Tesla meer kopen na de eerste. lol.

Heel saai gedoe, maar het werd interessant toen Musk zijn ding deed.
Ik denk dat ik de helft heb gemist door te denken "Heeft hij dat nu écht gezegd? Nee, dan kan niet. Of toch wel?".

Er zaten weer pareltjes tussen.

Maar goed, we weten nu dat hij kapitaal wil gaan ophalen, dat hij cashflow neutraal wil zijn tot het uitrollen van de robotaxi's.
Dus het "elk kwartaal zal winstgevend zijn van nu af aan (Q3)" is al terug afgeschreven.
Wat ook interessant was dat hij zei dat de hele kostenstructuur voor investeringen naar FSD gaat.
Dus wie hoopte op een refresh van de S & X, die is er aan voor de moeite.

Verder heel veel 'I think' en 'I guess' voor de vapourware die volgend jaar een feit zouden moeten zijn.
Wie gelooft die mens nog?

Volgens kanaal Z vandaag niemand, ze lachen hem gewoon uit.

In dat geval zouden ze dus kapitaal op gaan halen om via de spin-off hun eigen producten te kopen.

Alleen als je model 3's koopt. Die dingen zouden stijgen in waarde is me verteld en volgend jaar gaan ze u zelfs 30k per jaar opleveren.

Vers van de pers , Model S en X krijgen voorlopig meer dan 10% meer rijbereik, sneller laden tot 200 kW, nieuwe ophanging-adaptieve vering (die online geoptimaliseerd kan worden), nog betere prestaties, enz...

Voorlopig blijft de 100 kWh batterij onverandert maar blijkbaar is het management aangepast en kan men aan de V3 charger tot 200 kW laden, of algemeen tot 50% sneller superchargen.

Een basisrange Tesla S en X komt ook terug, ik denk dan aan ofwel met 2170 cellen, of een software gelimiteerde 100 kWh.

Tesla announced today that it is bringing to production new versions of the Model S and Model X with new drivetrains, upgraded suspension, and more.

New Tesla Drivetrain

Over the last few weeks, we have been reporting on a series of upgrades that Tesla is planning to bring to its Model S and Model X lineup – starting with new drivetrains.

As anticipated, Tesla is bringing its new permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor, first developed for Model 3, to Model S and Model X.

When first reporting on the upgrades, we knew that the new motors were more efficient, but we couldn’t say how it would translate to longer range exactly.

Tesla now says that it results in “a more than 10% improvement in range”:

“The net effect is a more than 10% improvement in range, with efficiency improvements in both directions as energy flows out of the battery during acceleration and back into the battery through regenerative braking. In addition to adding range, power and torque increases significantly across all Model S and Model X variants, improving 0-60 mph times for our Long Range and Standard Range models.”

The Long Range versions of Model S and Model X can now respectively travel 370 miles and 325 miles based on the EPA cycle.

According to a blog post about the changes, the Long Range versions are still using the same 100 kWh battery pack.

Tesla is also bringing back a ‘Standard Range’ option for both vehicles – an option that has been on and off the configurator over the past year.

For Model S, it starts at $78,000 and it offers a range of 285 miles on a single charge and for Model X, it starts at $83,000 and the range is 250 miles.

As per Tesla’s latest marketing strategy, the automaker doesn’t disclose the energy capacity of the ‘Standard Range’ battery pack, but it has most recently been between 75 and 85 kWh.

New Model S and Model X Charge Rate

Along with the new drivetrain, Tesla says that it managed to bump the Model S and Model X charge rate:

“Paired with the new more efficient drivetrain design, Model S and Model X are now capable of achieving 200 kW on V3 Superchargers and 145 kW on V2 Superchargers. Together, these improvements enable our customers to recharge their miles 50% faster.”

When Tesla launched Supercharger V3 in February, the company announced a 250 kW charge rate for Model 3 at the new stations.

At the time, the automaker did note that a higher charge rate would also be enabled for Model S and Model X, but it didn’t release any more details until now.

Tesla’s New Fully Adaptive Suspension

The automaker is also bringing a new upgraded suspension to Model S and Model X:

“We’ve also upgraded our air suspension system for Model S and Model X with fully-adaptive damping, giving it an ultra-cushioned feel when cruising on the highway or using Autopilot, and a responsive, exhilarating confidence during dynamic driving.”

Along with the hardware upgrade, Tesla says that it will also be able to take advantage of its over-the-air software capability to improve the suspension over time.

Along with those major hardware changes, Tesla also announced some more minor improvements:

“To complement these changes, we’ve also re-engineered several other components of Model S and Model X in keeping with our philosophy of continuous improvement. These updates include new wheel bearings and a few new tire designs for certain variants to improve range, ride, and steering.”

Furthermore, Tesla will be offering existing free Ludicrous Mode upgrade (worth $20,000) to any existing Model S and Model X owners willing to upgrade to a new Model S or Model X with all those new changes.
