#Analyst Dan Ives sees a ‘major inflection’ of electric vehicle demand, and Tesla as the clear EV market leader

Tesla’s stock surges to a record as Wedbush analyst raises bull-case target to $1,000

Shares of Tesla Inc. rallied into record territory Monday, after Wedbush analyst Dan Ives boosted his base-case price target, and said he envisions a scenario in which the electric vehicle market leader’s stock reaches $1,000.

The stock TSLA, +5.86% opened above the Nov. 19 record close of $499.27, then ran up as much as 5.3% to an all-time intraday high of $515.33 before paring some gains. The stock was recently up 5.0%

Ives raised his base-case stock price target to $560 from $500, while reiterating the neutral rating he’s had on Tesla since April 2019.

But Ives raised his bull-case price target by 25%, to $1,000 from $800.

“With the sustained path to profitability and S&P 500 index inclusion achieved, the Tesla bull story is now all about a stepped up EV demand trajectory into 2021,” Ives wrote in a note to clients.

https://teslastats.no/

Tesla, XPeng, Other EV Stocks Are On Fire. This Is Why.

Published: Nov. 20, 2020

Shares of electric-vehicle makers are up about 30% on average—this week—leaving investors wondering what is going on and what comes next.

In fact, 14 of the 15 EV maker stocks Barron’s looked at are higher.
Fisker (FSR) stock is down, but the shares are up 36% over the past month. Six of the 15 have hit new 52-week highs over the past seven days.

This week’s rally has added more than $100 billion to EV market capitalizations—more than stock in General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor (F) is worth combined.

The frenetic action is hard to follow, and to understand. Barron’s has a few explanations for the surge: Two are trading related, while two have some basis in stock fundamentals.

Trading Reason 1: The Tesla Halo Effect

Tesla (TSLA) is one of the stocks that hit a new 52-week high, rising 21% for the week. The committee that oversees the S&P 500 index sparked the rally by disclosing Monday evening that Tesla will be included in the market benchmark on Dec. 21. That will require the gigantic funds that track the index to buy the stock so that they can match its performance.

The index committee’s call is a signal that Tesla’s prospects should be taken seriously. which is a positive sign for other EV stocks. Tesla is big enough and prominent enough that all other EV stocks get caught up in its wake.

Trading Reason 2: New EV Comparisons

The special-purpose acquisition company CIIC Merger (CIIG) agreed to merge with the U.K.-based EV player Arrival this week. CIIC shares are up roughly 60% since the deal was announced. The deal values Arrival, which is focused on commercial applications such as buses and delivery vans, at roughly $10 billion.

That comparison might help the valuations of similar stocks, such as Hyliion (HYLN), Lordstown, and Workhorse (WKHS). Hyliion is having the worst week of the three, with a gain of 13%.

Fundamental Reason 1: EV Earnings

NIO (NIO), which reported earnings on Tuesday evening, was the last of the three U.S.-listed Chinese EV makers to disclose results. The company earned more than Wall Street expected and offered encouraging financial forecasts. NIO stock is up about 11% for the week and more than 1,100% for the year.

Solid results usually help shares, though investors don’t always agree on how much a stock should rise following earnings.

Fundamental Reason 2: EV Penetration Rates

GM said in a presentation at an investor conference this week that it wants to sell one million EVs by mid-decade. It also plans to launch 30 new all-electric vehicles by then, while driving down battery costs by 60%, making EVs more affordable.

Investors might be starting to factor in faster adoption of EVs. That would mean more sales and earnings growth for manufacturers. “EVs aren’t new—they are having their second coming,” Arrival President Avinash Rugoobur told Barron’s. “They are ready for prime time now and can scale.”

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote Monday that EV demand might surge next year. “We believe the stage is now set for a major step up in EV growth with Europe and China front and center,” he said. “With a vaccine now on the radar and a likely economic rebound on the horizon, we believe EV auto sales could disproportionately benefit as more consumers purchase an array of EV models hitting the road in 2021.”

What’s Next?

Barron’s can’t say if shares will go up or down. We don’t know what will happen over a given week or month. And like other value-oriented investors, we have doubts about the sky-high valuations of EV manufacturers.

A key point to watch is what Tesla tells investors to expect in terms of deliveries in 2021. The forecast will set expectations for how fast EVs are increasing their share of the overall auto market, as well offer a clue about the outlook for Chinese auto demand for the coming year. That will come in January.

Currently, Wall Street expects Tesla to deliver roughly 800,000 vehicles in 2021, up from about 500,000 in 2020. Expectations for deliveries next year have risen by roughly 60,000 units, or 8%, over the past three months.

Tesla Analysts Still Don't See 500K
Nov. 24, 2020 6:05 PM ET|162 comments | about: Tesla, Inc. (TSLA)
Bill Maurer

...
Over the past four fiscal quarters, Tesla has beaten street revenue estimates by an average of $382 million per quarter. Are we set up for a similar scenario to occur in Q4? At present, it certainly seems that way, given the average street revenue estimate implies Tesla is going to miss its delivery forecast for the year by a wide margin. We'll see if these analyst numbers change in a big way before the company reports its deliveries in January. But with the stock recently hitting an intra-day all-time high, it would be a major disappointment if Tesla doesn't even get within a few thousand deliveries of its half a million yearly forecast.

Bill, you still do not get it.

Nothing changes if Tesla delivers 475K or 500K. As long as there is FCF and some profits, it will be counted positive for Tesla.

People are in TSLA because they think that it is the next AAPL. It will be APPL of cars, autonomy and energy.

TSLA is up because this year removed any doubt about the future of ICE. It is dead. It has no future whatsoever. And the end is coming sooner than anybody expects. New ICE sales will be banned in many countries by 2030. There is no time left, it is nine years away.

And on top of this, GM just announced this : "We are planning to produce 1 million EVs in 2025". That is it. That is the strong competition. And it is the most ambitious goal after VW. Others, they are already out of the game.

Tesla is planning to produce 1 million BEVs next year.
Tesla is planning to produce close to 2 million BEVs in 2022.

If 4680 works, there is no stopping Tesla. Tesla will continue building gigafactories like nothing. That is why battery day is such a game changer. The street just realizing it.

And there is FSD beta. Which looks very promising. Even the skeptics are not so sure anymore. I saw several videos where the car navigated to the destination autonomously in haphazard city traffic. This is the "early beta stage". There are trips over 50 miles long without any intervention. Of course much more training is needed, but it is learning and learning fast. The progress is actually visible from version to version, a new version coming in about 10 day intervals.

The question to ask is this : Which auto company will produce 1 million BEVs in what year?

Nobody cares if Tesla falls short of 500k cars sold. That goal was set BEFORE the pandemic and was not revised downward accordingly. Nobody cares and it does not matter. Tesla is up 400% this year and well over 4000% since 2013. Those are the numbers that mean something.

Tesla on track to follow Apple’s footsteps as a software-based service provider

As the Full Self-Driving beta continues to roll out to more Tesla owners, the EV automaker’s value as a tech stock seems to becoming more evident to some people in Wall Street. In a research note published last week, Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas stated that Tesla seemed to be following Apple’s playbook and becoming a software-based service provider in the future.

Jonas explained that Apple CEO Tim Cook made his mark in the company by growing the tech giant’s revenues through software-based services. The Morgan Stanley analyst believes Tesla will follow a similar path in the future.

“Tesla is on the verge of a profound model shift from selling cars (volume x price) to generating high-margin, recurring software and services revenue,” he wrote in his November 18 note.

Jonas expanded on his theory, adding: “Services transformed the narrative on Apple from a stock that used to be perceived as a cyclical hardware stock fully valued at 15x earnings to one where target multiples increasingly approach 30x+ today.

“It is becoming clearer that, like many other technology firms, Tesla is using its growing fleet of hardware in services to ‘turn on’ new revenue opportunities…services that are far-reaching, high-margin, regularly recurring, and services that ultimately improve the user experience and stickiness of the platform,” the Morgan Stanley research note said.

Long-time Tesla bulls will not be surprised by Jonas’ new perspective of Tesla functioning like a tech giant. TSLA bulls have argued for a long time that the company should not be perceived as an automaker alone, especially considering its Tesla Energy division or the fact that the company makes its own chips and develops software, like Full Self-Driving (FSD).

For example, Business Insider calculated that FSD’s $10,000 price tag was about 20% of the Model 3 Long Range’s cost. Morgan Stanley estimated Tesla could earn close to 100% profit margin if customers added FSD to their Model 3 LR purchase.

When considered a tech company, TSLA’s upcoming inclusion into the S&P 500 index and its $544 billion market cap makes more sense. It also explains why Tesla owners are very loyal to the company. Offering an array of services can attract new users to Tesla, like it does for Apple. It could also generate strong loyalty to a brand, which explains why Apple users find it difficult to leave the company’s ecosystem.

The 5 Famous German Automakers’ Epic Battle To Survive

November 26th, 2020

BMW

The Munich automaker has announced a strategy to produce all available drivetrains, serving customers everything they could possibly ask for. This includes internal combustion engine (ICE), plugin hybrid (PHEV), full battery electric (BEV), and hydrogen fuel cell (FC) powertrains. The mantra of not deciding on a certain drivetrain because it is not clear which one will succeed is widely accepted by German politicians and citizens. The approach of offering customers a variety of solutions, and thus making sure there is strong demand for BMW vehicles, sounds meaningful.

With a size of about two million vehicles per year, BMW is limited in its ability to invest in all technologies like a pure player can do. It splits investments, which leaves less room for innovation, and it creates additional costs too. To address increasing production costs, BMW installed a flexible production platform that enables the company to manufacture all drivetrain models on one production line. The approach of allowing high asset utilization with a flexible production structure sounds compelling, but it has the disadvantage that technology compromises need to be made to enable it. BMW BEVs will not have what a pure BEV manufacturer can offer, and costs will be higher.

To become an innovative technology leader for all of these drivetrains is not possible if you have to split R&D investment and compromise on design to reduce costs for a flexible, unified production platform. Not to be a technology leader means you can’t achieve premium prices and margins the BMW organization is used to achieving.

The 7 year old BMW i3 was at its time an innovative BEV, but the BMW Board of Directors stopped the company from expanding further because the margins were lower than for the ICE cars they were accustomed to producing, and profits and margins determine board member bonuses. The i3 needed to improve, and follow-up models have been stalled. The expensive carbon chassis was never intended for truly large volume. As a side effect, frustrated innovative, creative, and smart engineers left BMW, partly founding their own BEV startups in China or the USA.

With just a decade of serious development in new drivetrains, it’s fair to expect that the future will bring dramatic improvements that pure players will be able to materialize and benefit from the most. At that stage, a technology shift from BMW to become a pure BEV manufacturer may be costly, and with decreasing demand for the older and outpaced drivetrains, difficult to finance.

BMW is exposing itself with its strategy to the competition and may still do well in the transition phase, but it could pay a high price on the future for profits they earn today. Short-term profit taking may satisfy shareholders right now, but it is not a sustainable strategy for the future.

Enkel gisteren 1 december: 148 inschrijvingen ( https://teslastats.no/ )

Citaat:
In a new email to Tesla employees obtained by Electrek, CEO Elon Musk says that he wants the automaker to focus on profits and cost-saving.

If not, the CEO warns that Tesla’s stock (TSLA) could fall drastically.

Tesla’s stock is currently on an incredible rise, increasing the company’s valuation by over $100 billion last month.

The market valuation doesn’t really match the fundamentals of the company’s financials.

In short, the market believes that the company will keep growing at an impressive pace and deliver strong profits in the future.

In a new email sent to Tesla employees today and obtained by Electrek, Musk warns that Tesla needs to be working on delivering those future profits:

When looking at our actual profitability, it is very low at around 1% for the past year. Investors are giving us a lot of credit for future profits, but if, at any point, they conclude that’s not going to happen, our stock will immediately get crushed like a soufflé under a sledgehammer!

Tesla has achieved profits in the last five quarters in a row, but the profits have been marginal and often dependent on regulatory credits.

Recently, the CEO has also been focusing on making Tesla vehicles more affordable.

Tesla climbs as Goldman lifts rating to buy and price target to $780
