Tesla has begun taking reservations for its Cybertruck in China, a strategic move to gain early insight on the market’s interest for an all-electric heavy-duty utility vehicle.

The company has opened up its online ordering process for the Cybertruck, giving interested parties a chance to reserve the futuristic pickup truck for RMB 1000 or roughly $141. Sharing similar terms with US consumers who placed $100 deposits to reserve a place in line for the Cybertruck, Tesla is offering a fully refundable cancellation policy as part of its pre-sale agreement.

As the Elon Musk-led company continues to deepen its roots in China, with the continued expansion of its Shanghai production plant and ongoing partnerships with local logistics and supply chain companies, having an early understanding of regionalized demand for pickup trucks is paramount for successful long-term execution.

China is currently the world’s second-largest pickup truck market. In a country that has seen more than a decade-long economic boom fueled by an increased appetite for mainstream consumer products, rapid construction has led to an increased demand for commercial utility vehicles – a market that Tesla would unquestionably want to tap into with the Cybertruck.

Tesla is rumored to have a deal with Steel Dynamics to supply the steel for the Cybertruck electric pickup truck from a new $1.7 billion factory in Texas – not too far from Tesla’s own Texas factory.

When Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck last year, one of the most interesting features was the fact the vehicle isn’t going to be built using a traditional automotive body system but with an exoskeleton.

The automaker wrote about the exoskeleton:

“Cybertruck is built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30 X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin to Tesla armor glass.”

Tesla said that they were using the best steel they could make:

“If there was something better, we’d use it. Help eliminate dents, damage and long-term corrosion with a smooth monochrome exoskeleton that puts the shell on the outside of the car and provides you and your passengers maximum protection.”

At the launch, CEO Elon Musk said that it is using the same alloy as SpaceX’s next interplanetary spaceship:

“We’re going to be using the same alloy in the Starship rocket.”

Now we’ve learned that Tesla could be getting the steel from Steel Dynamics, which is building a giant new factory in Texas.

San Patricio County Judge David Krebs, who is involved in the approval of the $1.7 billion project, told local media 3News:

“The 1.7-billion-dollar steel dynamics plant under construction in Sinton is supposed to be up and running by the Fall of 2021. Not only is it going to provide hundreds of good paying jobs but it’s also going to supply the steel used in making Tesla’s Cybertruck.”

Of course, Tesla is currently building its own factory in Austin Texas, just a few hours away from the new steel plant.

Tesla plans on bringing the electric pickup truck to production in late 2021 and it has over 650,000 reservations for the electric vehicle, according to the latest tally.

Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk warned that there will be challenges to bring the Cybertruck to production on time since it requires new manufacturing methods to make that steel exoskeleton.

The Tesla Cybertruck appears to be reaching its final form, at least before it enters production. While addressing an inquiry from an institutional investor about the development of the Cybertruck during Tesla’s Q4 FY 2020 earnings call, Elon Musk confirmed that almost all of the work surrounding the all-electric pickup’s engineering has been completed, and that the upcoming all-electric pickup’s design is already fixed.

“So we finished almost all of the Cybertrack engineering. So we’re no longer iterating at the design center level or design level. We’ve got the designs fixed,” the CEO said.

Just recently, Musk posted about the all-electric pickup’s door handles, which the CEO noted would be flush to the steel of the vehicle. This would make the all-electric pickup quite stunning in the flesh, and unabashedly futuristic.

"As noted by Musk in the recently-held Q4 FY 2020 earnings call, Tesla will soon acquire the equipment necessary to produce the all-electric pickup truck en masse. The progress of Gigafactory Texas, where the Cybertruck will be produced, has also been remarkable, with the CEO stating that some vehicles may be delivered this year if things go well.

“We’ll soon order the equipment necessary to make the Cybertruck work. We’re actually going to be using even bigger Tesla machines for the rear body of Cybertruck because you’ve got–obviously, it’s a bigger vehicle and you’ve got a long truck bed that’s going to a lot of load. So we’ll be using an 8,000-ton casting press for the rear body casting, as opposed to 6,000 tons for Model Y… If we get lucky, we’ll be able to do a few deliveries toward the end of this year, but I expect volume production to be in 2022,” Musk said.

This, according to Musk, was a timeframe that should also be true for Gigafactory Berlin. As for the Cybertruck, its initial production phase would likely depend on how fast IDRA could ship its 8,000-ton Giga Press–a house-sized machine that would create the electric pickup’s rear underbody–to Gigafactory Texas.

It is still unclear how many IDRA Giga Press machines Tesla will install in Giga Texas. However, the installation process seems to be moving along at a steady pace. Tesla’s first casting machine in Giga Texas looked fully assembled or at least close to it.

In Giga Berlin, Tesla plans to install eight Giga Press machines for production. Tesla received permission from Brandenburg’s State Office for the Environment to install the casting machines in Gigafactory Berlin last month. The EV manufacturer recently submitted an application asking for approval to install machines in Giga Berlin for final assembly.

Meanwhile, Giga Texas seems to be making great progress and appears to be following Tesla’s timeline to the tee. According to Roberts, a lot of insulation was being placed on top of steel structures and the paint shop walls. He also observed that the crew working on Giga Texas seemed to be increasing.

Last month, Elon Musk shared that Tesla would need to hire more than 10,000 people for Giga Texas through 2022. As construction pushes forward, Tesla may start ramping the hiring process soon.

A third-party Tesla Cybertruck camper system has received over $50 million worth of orders even though the product doesn’t even exist yet.

It shows just how excited people are for the new electric pickup trucks and the kinds of adventures you can do with it.

Earlier this month, we reported that people already started selling third-party Tesla Cybertruck accessories even though the truck is not on the market yet.

It started with this camper system for Cybertruck called Cyberlandr.

We noted that the project is quite ambitious since it looks to cram a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, and office in an automatically deployable camper out of the Cybertruck’s bed.

The design looks interesting, but they are taking a lot of chances designing an entire product without actually having the Cybertruck in hand or even just the actual production dimensions of the electric pickup truck, which is not coming to market until at least late this year.

Nonetheless, they started taking pre-orders for the $50,000 camper, and there are a lot of takers.

The company announced having received enough pro-orders this week to surpass $50 million in sales:

“CyberLandr TM" is an innovative camper/overlander for the Tesla Cybertruck that was unveiled April 6, 2021. CyberLandr™, by Stream It, Inc., transforms a Tesla Cybertruck into an adventure vehicle by providing a bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and office when deployed-while disappearing completely within the bed (or “vault”) of the Cybertruck when stowed. Preorders have continued at a rapid pace and already represents more than $50 million in future revenue.”

And they have more than just show-of-hand interest since they have actually been asking for significant down payments on the product from $100 to $5,000 to lock in certain discounts and have already sold out several tiers:



It means that they have also likely received millions in customer deposits.

Stream It cofounder Bill French says that he has never seen a product generate so much enthusiasm:

“We believe the enthusiasm is a direct result of people envisioning how this new adventure vehicle can improve their lives. People are telling us of many new uses for both wilderness and urban adventures. For example, parents at athletic matches, or the ability to boondock and overland to places previously inaccessible to a traditional RV. We estimate CyberLandr™ will be used 2-3 times more than traditional RVs because it is so easy to take with you.”

It also shows that Cybertruck reservations holders are excited about getting the electric pickup truck and are already thinking about how they are going to use them.

Tesla is believed to have close to 1 million reservations for the Cybertruck at this point.

Lance King, CEO of Stream It and lead designer of CyberLandr, said that the company will be working with Munro & Associates to bring the product to volume production:

“We conservatively estimate demand for CyberLand TM at more than 10,000 units in 2022. This is why we are working with renowned lean manufacturing consultants Munro & Associates to help ensure high quality while we scale manufacturing to meet demand.”

Many analysts don’t even see Tesla delivering 10,000 Cybertrucks in 2022 due to the challenges it is expected to face in bringing the innovative electric vehicle to production.

The Tesla Cybertruck is going to use a new exoskeleton body and Tesla’s latest structural battery pack technology with its own 4680 battery cells.

The parent company of the IDRA Group, which currently produces Tesla’s 6,000-ton Giga Press for the Model Y, is currently involved in a rather exciting project. As per recent photos shared in Chinese social media platforms, LK Tech, IDRA’s parent company, is currently building 9,000-ton presses, which would be capable of producing parts that are notably larger than the Model Y’s single-piece rear underbody.

The images of the new machines promptly attracted a lot of attention among EV enthusiasts online. At 9,000-tons, after all, the machines are even larger than the already gargantuan 6,000-ton Giga Presses that are currently deployed in the Fremont Factory. Similar to IDRA, LK Tech did not state which client the 9,000-ton press was for, though Tesla seems to be a definite front-runner for such a machine.

Back in March, the IDRA Group announced that it had secured the first order of its largest Giga Press to date. IDRA General Manager Riccardo Ferrario noted then that the machine that was ordered was an 8,000-ton press, and he also stated that the customer was a leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles. Similar to what Musk mentioned in the Q4 and FY 2020 earnings call, Ferrario stated that the 8,000-ton Giga Press would be large enough to make single-piece components for big vehicles like the Tesla Cybertruck.

“This giant machine will be used for the production of chassis components of larger vehicles such as pickup trucks, full electric lightweight goods vehicles, and SUVs. It is a maestro, and not only shows the capabilities of IDRA’s technical superiority, but also validates the many, many years of hard work that have gone into realizing this project,” Ferrario said.

Considering that the Cybertruck would need an 8,000-ton Giga Press, it remains to be seen if the 9,000-ton machine would indeed be used for a large vehicle like the Cybertruck or perhaps even the Semi. However, speculations are also abounding that the massive machine may actually be used for the $25,000 affordable car in China, which is expected to be unveiled in the near future.

Nog een manier om een goedkope Tesla te maken, is door de Tesla goedkoper te … ehm … maken. Om precies te zijn door meerdere onderdelen samen te brengen tot één onderdeel. Dat speciale onderdeel is groot en ingewikkeld om te produceren, maar daarvoor heeft Tesla een nieuwe, reusachtige spuitgietmachine uitgevonden. Bij de Tesla Model Y wordt ‘Giga Casting’ al gebruikt om het voorste en het achterste deel van de auto uit een stuk te gieten. Dat is 40 procent goedkoper en scheelt 79 onderdelen per auto.

3. EEN NIEUWE SOORT ALUMINIUM

De derde uitvinding heeft ook te maken met Giga Casting (zie uitvinding 2). Om een groot deel van een Tesla uit één stuk te gieten, is een metaal nodig dat sterk is, en geen coating of hittebehandeling behoeft. Met een hittebehandeling treedt bij grote onderdelen namelijk vervorming op en dat wil je niet. Maar dat metaal bestaat niet. Dus heeft Tesla het uitgevonden. Het is een soort van aluminium.

4. ACCUPAKKET WORDT ONDERDEEL VAN DE AUTO

Tot slot wordt bij de Tesla van de Toekomst het accupakket niet in de auto geschroefd - het wordt onderdeel van de auto. Dat heeft meer voordelen aan dan je zou denken. Niet alleen zijn de 370 onderdelen die het accupakket zijn stevigheid geven plotseling overbodig. De ruimte die dit schept in het pakket, maakt het mogelijk om de batterijcellen meer naar het midden van de auto te plaatsen – weg van de zijkant. Op die manier worden ze minder snel geraakt bij een botsing van opzij. Slim bedacht.

Waarom is dit plots nieuws?

De reservaties zijn sinds kort nog eens omhooggeschoten want menige heeft de prijs van de E Ford F 150 afgewacht en ook de leveringstermijn. Ook die van de Rivian Pick up, en andere E-pickups die recent hun prijzen gaven.

Blijkbaar biedt de Cybertruck veel meer waarde voor zijn prijs...

Gali believes that the Cybertruck’s premium specs were an indication that it was a better option than the F-150, according to truck buyers.

“What it boils down to is, if you’re buying this F-150, you’re paying a premium to the Cybertruck at every level,” Gali said. “You’re paying more money for a car with less range, less towing capacity, less speed.”

The most interesting piece of information in the images is the fact that it is consistently showing a range of 610 miles (982 km) for the Cybertruck.

When Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck, it announced that the top performance version would have a range of “over 500 miles.”

Therefore, it’s not impossible that it could end up having 610 miles of range, but that would be a very optimistic look at the electric pickup truck.
