My bet will be around 14,000 units, making it not only a strong candidate for the #1 spot in the local mainstream market, but also one of the two top markets, volume-wise, for the Tesla midsizer in Europe, with the other big market being Norway, where a "Model 3 mania" is sure to happen this year.

In the manufacturers ranking, Tesla (33%, up 2%) won its 2nd consecutive title, with Jaguar (13%) winning the Silver medal at the last minute, overrunning Nissan (12%), that dropped to 3rd.

Stocks took a leg lower late-morning after White House Adviser Larry Kudlow on Fox Business said a sizable distance remains between China and the U.S. as they hash over a trade resolution. Separately, CNBC reported that President Donald Trump and China President Xi Jinping may not meet face-to-face before a March 1 trade deadline, further rattling market optimism that a trade pact can be achieved soon. Trade concerns have been among the most significant headwinds for markets in recent months.

On Jan. 18, Tesla told The Times, “We have received European vehicle type approval for Model 3,” but did not mention that the approval did not include Autopilot. European car publications that were given Model 3s to review in recent weeks reported the cars’ Autopilot was disabled.

Type approval is a term used to describe a car that meets European Union regulations and can be sold throughout the continent.

“We are planning to enable Autopilot in Europe beginning next week,” a Tesla spokesman told The Times on Thursday. The company did not answer any other questions, including one about when it expects type approval for Autopilot.

The lack of Autopilot approval — whether a short-term problem or something more serious — complicates the Model 3’s entry into Europe. Tesla already sells its Model S and Model X cars in Europe. Norway is one of the company’s largest markets outside the U.S.

The first bulk shipment of Model 3s arrived at the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium this week. But already, European buyers are expressing the same “delivery hell” complaints on Twitter that have become routine in the United States — rescheduled deliveries, cars not showing up as promised, difficulty contacting Tesla customer service to resolve problems.

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk acknowledged the rocky start in a tweet Wednesday: “Sorry, many unexpected challenges with cars coming through Zeebrugge first time. Cars will start moving out in volume tomorrow.”

RDW did not say why Autopilot has not been approved, when it might be, or why the Model 3 version falls short while Model S and Model X Teslas are available in Europe with Autopilot.

Tesla was asked the same questions repeatedly by The Times but did not answer them.

The Times also asked Tesla whether refunds would be offered to customers who’ve already paid for Autopilot, whether they can reject the car for a full refund and whether Tesla will discontinue charging for Autopilot on European order forms. Tesla’s web-based order forms as of Thursday morning still were charging European buyers around $6,000 for the Autopilot option.

Autopilot is controversial because, while Tesla owner manuals tell drivers to remain alert and keep their hands on the steering wheel while using it, Musk has long taken a more casual attitude toward the technology, appearing on television and YouTube videos putting his hands in the air, roller coaster style, while the car drives itself. YouTube is filled with videos of people apparently sleeping in moving Tesla cars and otherwise flouting the manual’s suggestions.

The LA Times wrote about the issue sparking worries among Model 3 buyers in Europe who reached out to Electrek.

Tesla says that it’s not an issue and they expect to receive approval any day:

“We are planning to enable Autopilot in Europe beginning next week.”

Model 3’s Autopilot system is the same used in Model S and Model X, which have already been approved by RDW.

Tesla’s latest model simply uses slightly different hardware and RDW needed to test it again to make sure it complies with the local regulations.

A source familiar with the matter said that the tests have been completed and they don’t expect any issue with the approval. It simply needs to be processed.

As we reported yesterday, Tesla already started Model 3 deliveries in Europe, but some delays in processing the first shipment at the port have pushed back some deliveries.

Toch al autotopilot hardware V3 voor Europese versies? Dat zou wel de reden kunnen zijn. Bovendien ook +FSD kan namelijk besteld worden in Europa (wel bevestiging per mail)

Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium: The vehicle transport vessel ‘Glovis Captain’ that reached the port yesterday has unloaded the Tesla’s electric vehicle shipment which reportedly consisted of 1,400 Tesla Model 3 and 350 Tesla Model S.

The European Tesla enthusiasts were somehow able to photograph a few pictures of the Tesla Model 3 fleet (below) standing at the Belgian port, as camera and mobile usage is restricted at this location.

This marks the start of the mass disruption of the Internal Combustion Engine(ICE) vehicle industry as Europe’s enthusiasm towards Tesla and green transportation is unparalleled especially after the VW Dieselgate scandal.

Kurt Hellyn(@KurtHellyn) from Belgium was able to take the following pictures at the Port of Zeebrugge along with some vital stats about the number of cars shipped (above & below).

Kurt was also able to know that a total of 100,000 Tesla Model 3 will be shipped to Port of Zeebrugge only, according to his contacts at the port. This is a huge number only for Belgium’s port as there are possibilities of shipments destined for Norwegian seaports as well.

The next vehicle carrier vessel ‘Glovis Cosmos’ is estimated to arrive at the Port of Zeebrugge on 9th Feb, which according to expert estimates would carry around 2,000 Tesla Model 3s.

Benieuwd wat de Glovis Cosmos echt gaat bijhebben (ieg 2000 model 3 + model ?), die zou maandagmorgen aankomen. Vanuit de grote parking van Zeebrugge zullen we het kunnen volgen.

Volgens info? Kurt Hellyn zou Zeebrugge alleen al instaan voor 100.000 model 3, wslk voor het ganse jaar 2019. Dat is ~2128 model 3 per week gemiddeld voor de 47 weken van 2019 (vanaf 6 februari)

Elon Musk - de topman van Tesla - is geland op de luchthaven van Oostende. Dat was te zien op Flightradar. Hij is in ons land om de eerste lading Tesla’s te inspecteren bij behandelaar ICO.

200 nieuwe jobs

vanaf nu zou er elke week een nieuwe levering volgen. Alweer volgens Musk zou dit tot 200 extra jobs in de Zeebrugse haven opleveren. Deze jobs worden gecreëerd bij ICO, die de grootste autoterminal ter wereld uitbaat. De werknemers van ICO lossen de auto’s maar gaan ze ook helemaal klaarzetten voor het transport naar verdelers in niet minder dan 14 landen.

Oplaadpunten

Om al die Tesla’s op de juiste plaats te krijgen moeten ze uiteraard ook worden opgeladen. Hiervoor investeerde ICO in 300 oplaadpunten die de wagens tot 80% moeten opladen alvorens ze naar de consument kunnen vertrekken.

CKS VEROVERT VLAANDEREN

Eigenlijk staat Lode Colson niet graag in de belangstelling. Hoge bomen vangen veel wind weet je wel. Maar ook vanuit de luwte wist hij CKS uit te bouwen tot een belangrijke speler op de markt van elektrische installaties in België. De grote doorbraak volgde in 2006 met pionierswerk in de koppeling van PV-installaties aan het elektriciteitsnetwerk. De afgelopen jaren wist CKS de klip van de ineenstorting van de zonnepaneelsector handig te omzeilen. Eind dit jaar start zelfs een tweede vestiging om de Antwerpse regio beter te bedienen. En toch was groei nooit een doel op zich voor de nuchtere Limburger. “Het belangrijkste is dat ik me amuseer.”

Tesla Model 3 is now entering the European market and it is making some automakers nervous. According to a new report, Porsche and Audi reverse-engineered Tesla’s new electric car and they were quite surprised by its cost.
It’s somewhat common in the industry to purchase vehicles from competitor to see what they are up to, but it also becomes a necessity for vehicles that are seen as important disrupters.

The Model 3 appears to fit the description as it apparently outsold all other premium sedans combined in the US.

During the early production ramp up, it was difficult to get your hands on a Model 3, but some automakers paid a pretty penny to be amongst the first to be able to check out the new electric car.

About a year ago, two Model 3 vehicles were spotted on their way to Germany – presumably to be reverse-engineered.

Later, a report came out about a German automaker being impressed by Model 3 after reverse-engineering it.

Now a new report from Germany’s Manager Magazin (German and paywall) includes a deep dive into the state of Audi with comments from executives and insider sources.

It claims that Porsche and Audi, who are working together on a next-generation electric platform, had to change their approach because the cost was too high compared to what Tesla is achieving.

They report:

“The Porsche and Audi engineers have to change [the PPE] because Tesla’s Model 3 has gotten better than they thought.”

The next-gen platform called Premium Platform Electric (PPE) was greenlighted almost two years ago and it is expected to be ready around 2020 or 2021.

According to the new report, the first version was coming at about 3,000 euros too expensive, which Porsche is said to be able to absorb but Audi wasn’t on board. They believe that they need to lower the cost in order to be competitive with other upcoming EVs.

The battery cell cost is apparently the biggest factor that pushes the cost of the platform higher and Tesla claims to be leading the industry on that front.

According to the report, Audi and Porsche could delay the PPE in order to improve the cost and be competitive with Tesla.

The PPE is becoming increasingly important for Audi according to Manager-Magazin’s report, which describes a failing e-tron program:

The e-tron as the first electric Audi is not only late. It does not reach some target values and has become far too expensive with more than two billion euros in development costs. The approximately 600,000 cars sold for the break-even are now regarded as an illusion.

The e-tron electric SUV was supposed to be delivered to customers last year, but Audi says that software issues have resulted in delays.

The German automaker is still planning several other vehicles based on the same platform before the PPE becomes available. (...)

As we reported earlier this week, Tesla received its first massive shipment of Model 3 vehicles at the Zeebrugge port for European deliveries, which started a day later.

Some buyers experienced delays as Tesla apparently ran into some issues to process the first batch of cars in Zeebrugge.

The automaker wants the port to be able to handle 3,000 Model 3 vehicles per week at the location, which is a tall order.

We obtained some images of the setup they have at the port to charge and prepare the Model 3 to ship out for delivery:

Sources say that Tesla have been ramping up its effort and cars have been leaving to delivery centers in higher volume.

CEO Elon Musk was at the port on Saturday to take a look at the situation:

He says that he will also go to Tesla’s European headquarters in Amsterdam and the Tesla factory in Tilburg, which Tesla has been using to deliver Model 3.

Later on, the CEO says that he will go to Norway to “review service”.

As we previously reported, Norway, which is Tesla’s biggest market per capita, has arguably experienced some of the most difficult wait times when it comes to service.

Tesla’s fleet grew at an incredible pace in the market and its service capacity couldn’t keep up.

Norway’s EV sales are about to skyrocket to a new high with the arrival of the Model 3, which should put even more pressure on Tesla’s operations in the country.

The first boat to arrive in Europe didn’t have many cars for the market, but there are 3 more at sea and they are expected to have thousands of Model 3 vehicles for Norway.

During its last earnings, Tesla said that it is seriously working on service with auto issue detection, towing call/loaner, and stock parts.

Zeebrugge moet nu al even bekend zijn in de USA als Brussels. lol

De grootste noden liggen in Noorwegen (wslk ook Duitsland), de service moet daar serieus uitgebouwd worden met de zondvloed aan Model 3.

Gus Schmidt was so excited when he received his Tesla Model 3 sedan in August that he tweeted a photo of himself and his wife grinning next to the electric car. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., resident damaged his bumper in a low-speed collision and then had to wait three months for the repair shop to get the spare parts from Tesla and fix his car. The unusually long wait for a repair underlines a drawback of being a Tesla customer.
