Volkswagen has confirmed that it will switch all of its MEB-based electric vehicles to support bidirectional charging starting next year.

It could give a big boost to vehicle-to-grid technologies.

Vehicle-to-grid

During the early days of the electric vehicle revolution, the industry was cautious about the use of battery packs as longevity was a big question.

But now the industry as a whole is getting more confident that well-managed battery packs can last a long time, some see them as underused assets.

Some EVs have big battery packs enabling 200+ miles of range, but they travel fewer than 40 miles more days.

As the fleet of electric vehicles grows in some markets, controlling when electric vehicles can charge on the local electric grid has great value for balancing the load and avoiding running expensive and polluting peaker power plants.

If those electric vehicles could also put power that they don’t need back into the grid, that would have even greater value.

The technology is often referred to as “vehicle-to-grid.”

An electric vehicle with bidirectional charging capacity can send power pack into the grid, or a home, or even another electric vehicle.

Some companies and electric utilities have been exploring the idea of using a fleet of electric vehicles equipped with bidirectional charging to help balance the grid when needed.

With big enough fleets, it could provide very valuable grid services by taking back some power from thousands of vehicles that don’t need it. In return, those EV owners would get compensated by the electric utility for the use of their battery pack.

The problem has been that there are only a limited number of electric vehicles equipped with bidirectional charging capability.

The Nissan Leaf is the most popular EV with the capacity, but that’s about it.

However, there are many new EVs coming with the capacity. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equipped with the technology, and Tesla has commented that all future vehicles will be equipped with bidirectional charging capacity.

Now Volkswagen is adding its name to the list.

VW going with bidirectional charging

We knew that the automaker had been working on the technology since they unveiled a wall charger with bidirectional charging capacity last year, but they didn’t say when the capacity would come to the vehicles.

Now the German group has confirmed that every new VW EV based on the MEB platform is going to be equipped with bidirectional charging capacity starting next year (via Handelsblatt):

“The test vehicles are running, we are in the last pulls with the preparations,” confirms VW Development Board Member Thomas Ulbrich in an interview with the Handelsblatt. From 2022 onwards, every electric car from the Volkswagen Group that is developed on the basis of the MEB (“modular electrification kit”) electrical platform can not only charge the electricity but also return it to the grid. In addition to VW, the MEB is also used by the sister brands Audi , Skoda and Seat-Cupra.

The automaker could produce as many as 300,000 vehicles with the capacity next year.

It would result in big enough EV fleets with the capacity to have big impacts on the electric grid.

Volkswagen plans to be involved in the process to make sure it benefits everyone involved, including the electric vehicle owner.

Furthermore, bidirectional charging also offers other advantages, like the potential to provide backup power to your home when needed.

Voorlopig grootste snellaadstation komt in Coalinga, CA. (Harris Ranch)

of Canada-Tesla configuratie: https://www.tesla.com/en_ca/model3/design#overview

Citaat:
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-auto...ned-elon-musk/

A recent set of updates from Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla is looking to eventually update its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving suite to a camera-based system. This means that in the future, Tesla’s all-electric vehicles would be navigating themselves and performing driver-assist functions without the use of components such as radar.

Musk’s update came as a response to a post from Tesla owner and FSD Beta user @WholeMarsBlog, who shared a clip of his Model 3 navigating away from a parking lot to its destination without input from its driver. In his response, Musk noted that FSD Beta V9.0, which has been highly-anticipated by the EV community, is almost ready.

Almost ready with FSD Beta V9.0. Step change improvement is massive, especially for weird corner cases & bad weather. Pure vision, no radar.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 9, 2021

Elaborating further, Musk explained that the V9.0 update should improve the FSD Beta’s performance in corner cases and bad weather, which remain challenging to the advanced driver-assist system today. But this was not all, as Musk noted that the update would be “pure vision, no radar.” When prodded further, the Tesla CEO admitted that Tesla eventually plans to get rid of radar altogether in its future vehicles.

Unsurprisingly, Musk’s statements about Tesla’s impending removal of radar attracted its own fair share of critics, many of whom argued that a pure vision approach is a step backward. This is especially notable as Tesla is already using fewer sensors for its driver-assist systems compared to competitors like Cruise and Waymo, both of whom rely on lidar and high-definition maps to navigate.

Musk responded to these concerns, highlighting that ultimately, vision has the potential to be far superior to radar.

Sensors are a bitstream and cameras have several orders of magnitude more bits/sec than radar (or lidar).

Radar must meaningfully increase signal/noise of bitstream to be worth complexity of integrating it.

As vision processing gets better, it just leaves radar far behind.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 10, 2021

“When radar and vision disagree, which one do you believe? Vision has much more precision, so better to double down on vision than do sensor fusion. Sensors are a bitstream and cameras have several orders of magnitude more bits/sec than radar (or lidar). Radar must meaningfully increase signal/noise of bitstream to be worth complexity of integrating it. As vision processing gets better, it just leaves radar far behind,” Musk explained.

Tesla’s approach to full self-driving is partly based on the notion that humans do 100% of their driving through vision alone, without any radar or lidar use. This was highlighted by Tesla executives since Autonomy Day back in 2019, when the company unveiled its custom FSD computer. As for concerns about whether cameras could provide the same level of safety as radar in detecting what is happening several cars ahead, Musk noted that there’s a high probability that vision could perform just as well.

These things are best thought of as probabilities. There are 5 forward-facing cameras. It is highly likely that at least one of them will see multiple cars ahead.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 10, 2021

“These things are best thought of as probabilities. There are 5 forward-facing cameras. It is highly likely that at least one of them will see multiple cars ahead,” Musk said.

Tesla is not the only company in the market that is looking into a vision-only approach. Last year, Intel Corp released a video of an autonomous car from MobilEye that was navigating around Jerusalem for about 20 minutes. Unlike other self-driving vehicles, MobilEye’s car was only equipped with a suite of cameras and nothing else. The brief video was impressive, showing the MobilEye autonomous car going through four-way intersections with no traffic lights, as well as inner-city lanes that required the vehicle to avoid pedestrians.

Europa sprecifiek zou 13 maal meer GWh moeten produceren tegen 2025.
USA meer dan dubbel zoveel tegen 2025, enz...

Citaat:
https://www.spglobal.com/marketintel...apacity-growth

China dominates current lithium-ion battery capacity

China currently dominates global LIB capacity, accounting for 77% in 2020. We nevertheless expect greater geographic diversification as more countries become LIB producers, especially in Europe. We forecast Europe's share of LIB capacity to increase from 6% in 2020 to 25% in 2025, lowering China's forecast share to 65%.

(....)

European LIB capacity to rise 13-fold by 2025

Europe's LIB production capacity is forecast to increase from 28 GWh in 2020 to 368 GWh in 2025 under a supportive policy framework, as the region overtakes China in becoming the world's largest PEV market.

According to the European Union, passenger cars are responsible for 12% of the region's carbon dioxide emissions. In 2020, the EU tightened the fleetwide emissions target for new cars by 27% to 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, and is set to further lower emissions from 2021 levels by 15% in 2025 and 37.5% in 2030. These target roadmaps have led to automakers increasing their regional PEV model offerings and sales to avoid a penalty of 95 euros per gram of excess CO2. Outside the EU, the U.K. and Norway are promoting PEV sales with purchase grants, favorable road tax rates and banning the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2025 and 2030 respectively.

Europe has a tradition of car manufacturing, with key production hubs across Germany, France, the U.K. and Italy. Consequently, Europe has also seen an influx of battery capacity investment to meet the regional demand for PEV production and sales. Five European countries could join the ranks of LIB producers by 2025 — the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Slovakia and Sweden.

The biggest capacity increases through 2025 include 100 GWh under phase one by Tesla Inc. in Germany, LG Chem in Poland reaching a total capacity of 70 GWh and Northvolt AB in Sweden and Germany totaling 48 GWh.

US LIB capacity growth to lag but still more than double by 2025

We anticipate U.S. LIB capacity to more than double from 42 GWh in 2020 to 91 GWh in 2025. The investments are led by LG Chem and SK Innovation Co. Ltd. Tesla has not yet announced a capacity for the Texas Gigafactory project, which remains a "dark horse" and could add significantly more capacity. The LIB investment momentum is, nevertheless, weaker in the U.S. than in Europe or China, as a result of a comparatively weaker policy support framework for PEVs to date. We expect the U.S. share of global capacity to decline from 9% in 2020 to 6% in 2025, as the growth rate in the LIB capacity lags other regions.

Localization of battery manufacturing capacity

LIB battery packs account for 30%-40% of the price of a BEV, making them the costliest component. Automakers are increasingly keeping battery pack production in-house as battery packs are customized to each vehicle model and are costly to ship due to weight. Tesla's Shanghai and Nevada gigafactories use third-party cells to assemble battery modules and packs.

LIB cell production nearby auto and pack production helps minimize supply-chain risk and enables improved collaboration between battery and automakers, while reducing logistics costs and improving safety. In addition, LIBs are classified as dangerous goods because of fire hazards and require additional testing and preparation in accordance with international transportation regulations before shipping.

Battery and automakers are seeking to lower battery cost by taking a holistic approach to battery design, from cells to modules and packs. For example, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd.'s cell-to-pack technology and BYD Co. Ltd.'s blade battery technology attempt to eliminate excess space in battery packs, while Tesla is innovating tab-less technology in cell design to reduce cost and improve production efficiency and battery performance.

There is also significant stickiness in the supply relationship between battery makers and automakers, which provides incumbent suppliers with first-mover advantage. Having a single cell supplier for the same battery pack allows greater homogeneity among cells, which is critical in determining battery safety, capacity and longevity. There is also a long qualification period for a new battery supplier, resulting in long-term relationships between battery makers and automakers. Finally, since battery cell manufacturing enjoys economies of scale, larger producers benefit from lower costs.
(...)

Global LIB capacity is set to increase 218% between 2020 and 2025, with greater regionalization closer to key PEV markets. While this could be seen as an example of deglobalization, it is actually globalization working at its best, where the most competitive and sophisticated battery makers are best located to capture LIB demand growth in the fastest-growing PEV markets.

Citaat:
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-mode...s-crazy-march/

Last month, Tesla China sold 10,140 Model Ys in the local market, putting it far ahead of the competition, both local and foreign. Following the Made-in-China Model Y was the NIO ES6, which sold 2,960 units in March. In third place was the NIO EC6, which sold 2,484 units. This means that the Model Y sold over three times more vehicles than its closest competitor in the EV SUV segment.

Competitors from Germany such as the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz EQC ended the month with more conservative numbers, at 1,526 and 557 units sold in March, respectively. Interestingly enough, the Volkswagen ID.4 X, a vehicle that matches the Model Y pretty well considering its price, range, and features, ended the month with a conservative 495 units sold.

While the Tesla Model Y’s accomplishments in China’s EV SUV sector are impressive, the all-electric crossover from Giga Shanghai is also making a lot of waves in the country’s overall premium SUV segment, which covers both electric and fossil fuel-powered vehicles. In February, the Model Y sold 4,640 units in China, placing it notably behind the best-selling Audi Q5, which sold 10,529 in the same month.

For March, the Audi Q5 proved once more that it is a strong SUV in China, with sales of 15,270. Following it was the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which sold 14,240, and the BMW X3, which sold 13,491 units. The Tesla Model Y was the overall 4th best-selling premium SUV in China with its sales of 10,151 units.

It should be noted that the Tesla Model Y may be on track to dethrone China’s best-selling premium SUVs. Deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 to the domestic market, after all, rose to 25,327 units last month. And considering that the Model Y competes in a much wider segment due to its crossover status, there seems to be a good chance that the vehicle could match the sales numbers of its sedan sibling, or perhaps even more, in the near future.

The German Mercedes brand brought out the currently unpriced EQS in a lengthy and detailed press release on Thursday that outlined nearly any question one could ask. Apart from how much the vehicle will cost, Mercedes detailed everything from battery pack capacity, its WLTP-rated range, and its performance specifications, all of which are important figures for anyone interested in getting the most bang for their buck when driving a luxury vehicle. A high five-figure or low six-figure tag is expected to be introduced based on competitors in the same sector. The Model S from Tesla ranges from $79,900 to $149,990, not including incentives, while the Lucid Air ranges from $77,400 to $169,000, also not including incentives.

The EQS will come in two variants: the EQS 450+ and the EQS 580 4MATIC, which will be the more performance-capable build of the vehicle. Mercedes released the following table that outlines the finer points of both of the EQS variants in its press release.

Mercedes-Benz and Daimler CEO Ola Kaellenius said the all-electric EQS is ready for the most critical and picky customers that the automaker has dealt with in its history. “The EQS is designed to exceed the expectations of even our most discerning customers. That’s exactly what a Mercedes has to do to earn the letter ‘S’ in its name. Because we don’t award that letter lightly.”

The United States’ first models of the EQS will pack 516 horsepower and 770 kilometers or 478 miles of range, according to WLTP ratings.

Neue MEA-Plattform

Citaat:
http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/04...arch-2021.htmlFrance March 2021

Tesla Model 3 #1 in France!

In a red hot market, where BEVs jumped 183% YoY and PHEVs shooted 6-fold in March, plugin sales had their second best month ever, with 29,737 units, allowing the plugin share to reach 16% last month (8.5% BEV), pulling the YTD share to a record 14% (6.9% BEV), which is already a 3% increase over the 2020 result (11%), and the 20% share i predicted for the whole of this year looks well on target.

So, this is what Disruption looks like...

Looking at the 2021 ranking, once again the main news is the disruptive force of the Tesla Model 3, that shooted for the leadership, not only of the plugin market, but more importantly, on the overall midsize market, profiting from last month unusual high tide to secure the midsize leadership, with twice the amount of units of the runner-up Peugeot 508 (2,326 registrations). Funny enough, the French midsizer has 42% of its sales coming from their PHEV versions, which speaks volumes about the current electrification transition happening now.

Another model jumping positions is the Mercedes GLC300e/de, going up from #15 to #11.

In the city car category, the Renault Twingo EV climbed one position and gained some distance from the #8 Fiat 500e.

On the second half of the table, we now have the VW ID.3 up to #15, while March saw 3 models joining the table, with the Nissan Leaf in #18, the Mini Cooper EV in #19 and the Renault Megane PHEV in #20.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, the leader Peugeot dropped 4% in share, to 18%, but it is (still) enough to stay ahead of the runner-up Renault (15%, down 1%), while Tesla (9% share, up 5%) is now closing the podium, ahead of Kia and Volkswagen, both with 5% each.

As for OEMs, Stellantis is the major force, with a commanding 31% share, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance far behind, with only 16%, while the best foreign OEM is the Volkswagen Group, with 11% share.

Model 3 alone will soon reach 1 million.
...
We guess that Model 3 alone will soon reach 1 million units, as the first electric car ever to do so:

Tesla Model 3 - probably above 950,000 (since mid-2017)
Tesla Model Y - probably above 100,000 (since early 2020)
The cumulative sales of Model S/Model X stand at over 510,000, which is also quite a high number.

The total number of Tesla EVs on the road is above 1.5 million (about 1,584,500) and at the current rate of hundreds of thousands per year, Tesla should be able to reach 2 million in 2021.

The previous milestone of 1 million units was reached in April 2020 (1,000,000th EV was produced on March 10, 2020).
