JERUSALEM (AFP) Israel vowed to continue building its West Bank barrier despite overwhelming condemnation in a UN General Assembly vote hailed as a watershed diplomatic victory by the Palestinians.

"The resolution adopted by the UN is aimed at depriving us of this security shield without offering us an alternative way of protecting ourselves against terrorism," said Dore Gold, a senior advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

"We have every right to defend ourselves and are determined to construct this fence," Gold, a former ambassador to the United Nations, told AFP on Wednesday.

The general assembly voted by 150 to six late Tuesday, with 10 absentions, to endorse a recent non-binding world court ruling that said the barrier was illegal and that parts already built on Palestinian land should be torn down.

Assembly resolutions also have no legal force but represent the majority of world opinion, and the Palestinians scored a victory in getting the 25-member European Union to unite behind the measure. The United States was among the handful of states that voted against the resolution.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, denounced what he called the "disgraceful support" of the EU nations, singling out France for particular criticism.

"France behaved in a particularly disgraceful fashion by acting for its Palestinian friends and convicing the other European countries to adopt this resolution," he told public radio.

The Palestinians said that the international community must not allow Israel to simply ignore the resolution, with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's top aide saying it was now time to consider the imposition of sanctions.

"It's the international community's responsiblity to persuade the Israeli government, which is still insisting that it will build the wall, to comply with its will," Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP.

"We are asking the international community to impose sanctions on Israel if it does not comply with international law."

Negotiations minister Saeb Erakat said it was time that the international community stopped allowing Israel to act as "a state above the law."

"It (the UN resolution) confirms the illegal nature of the Israeli occupation and annuls all the measures in the Palestinian occupied territories, including east Jerusalem," he told AFP.

"The decision is a major victory for Palestinian diplomacy and the Palestinian people as well as Arab diplomacy."

Israel had already said that it had no intention of respecting the non-binding verdict by the International Court of Justice, arguing that the barrier is vital to defend itself against suicide attacks.

The Palestinians say its route, often jutting deep into the West Bank, shows its real intent is to preempt the borders of their promised future state.

The Palestinians are now likely to try and push the issue to a vote at the Security Council but the US is almost certain to use its veto power to block such a move.

Het word nu ook eens tijd dat de Palestijnen zich kunnen verdedigen van de Israëlische soldaten.

Timmeken, je hebt volledig gelijk en Israel, noch Sharon zullen er zich iets van aantrekken. Terwijl een genocide aan de gang is in Sudan, zitten ze daar over een hekje te zeveren, gewoon omdat ze bang zijn van de Islam en blijven ze monddood over Sudan. Dat laat nog eens zien dat de VN een zuiver propaganda spul is van de derde wereldlanden met hun dictators en Europa zich er bij neerlegt.

Hier een paar andere hekken, niet eens om de veiligheid van de burgers te beschermen. Maar ja volgens sommigen (en ook hier op dit forum) mag het leven van joden niet beschermd worden. Met hetzelfde brutaal geruis wordt trouwens het unicum van de holocaust aangekaart. De Shoah gaan vergelijken met andere genocides is opzichzelf al een banalizering, want welke genocide werd op industriele wijze uitgevoerd met volle konvoiien van treine, gaskamers enz...? Degene die zogezegd verontwaardingd zijn over twee maten en gewichten over genocides zijn dus DUIDELIJK niet verontwaardigd door de Shoah en trachten het op eender welke wijze te banalizeren. Er zijn er zelfs die dat HIER als "wat zever" hebben beschreven.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's call on Jews living in
France to pack up, leave their country and resettle in Israel is
an affront to both world Jewry and the international community
alike. While French Jews are not likely to accept Sharon's
invitation to pull up their roots and relocate themselves and
their children in Israel, the mere suggestion that Jewish people
everywhere should abandon their lives and start anew in Israel
simply because they are Jews is not only absurd, it's shocking.

At a time when international human rights norms call for
pluralism and multiculturalism as the new basis for existence
between races, religions and ethnic groups, what Sharon is now
advocating is a reversal of this trend of universality in favour
of divisions and separations between peoples on the basis of
religion. Israel has made it a cardinal principle of its policies
to encourage the regrouping of all Jews in the world in Israel.
The entire premise is evidence of a policy of discrimination at
the highest level.

Now out of some pathetic desperation Sharon is appealing to
French Jews to emigrate. By doing so and claiming that they are
falling prey to anti-Semitism is a slap in the face of France as
well as other democratic and pluralistic countries who have fought
for equality in their increasingly multicultural societies.

But if such a mass migration as Sharon proposed were to pass,
consider the demographics, the economic and social implications.
A gathering of the Jewish populations around the world would
account for many millions of people. For such a large number of
people to dislocate themselves from cities, towns and villages
they called "home" for decades and centuries to live in Israel
would be nonsensical.

The waves of Russian Jews who left the former Soviet Union to
seek "refuge" in Israel have found it quite difficult to adjust
to a new culture and way of living. The same holds true for the
Jews from Ethiopia who ran up against racial discrimination.
Employment and housing were genuine hurdles for these immigrants,
most of who were lured to Israel on promises of a "better life."
If what worries Sharon is the rise of anti-Semitism in France and
anywhere else in Europe, all he needs to do to reverse the tide
is to reexamine his policies that have stirred growing worldwide
criticism.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's public call on Sunday for
France's 600,000 Jews to "immediately" emigrate to Israel is both
offensive and dangerous. It is firstly an affront to France, as
the French government has imposed serious measures to try to
further the secularization of the country in the face of increased
attacks on both Jews and Muslims in recent years. Secondly,
calling for mass Jewish immigration is not the solution to
Israel's basic dilemma or to easing tensions between it and the
Arab world.

The French government was right to call this plea, made to a
Jewish American association in Jerusalem, unacceptable and to
demand an explanation. France would stand to lose a significant
part of its multi-cultural identity, and such a move of French
Jews, if it were to occur, would not ease the problem of
anti-Semitism in Europe. In fact, it would give undeserved
self-satisfaction to anti-Semites. Tolerance and understanding of
other religious and ethnic groups is best established by
interaction and involvement, not by separation. Furthermore, that
anti-Semitism still exists in France and around the world shows
that the creation of Israel as a safe haven for Jews has not
solved the problem that gave birth to modern political Zionism in
the first place.

Misschien moeten we de Palestijnen leren vechten zoals beschaafde westerlingen dat doen. Tapijtbombardementen, gifgasaanvallen, atoombommen. Nee, zelmoordaanslagen zijn ''onbeschaafd''. Nu, ik ben uiteraard ook tegen zelfmoordaanslagen maar omwille van politieke en niet moralistische redenen.

De meest Europese landen zijn na ineenstorting van het communisme steeds de pro-Arabische kaart beginnen trekken enkel omdat ze bang zijn dat de moslim-immigranten straatguerilla's in hun steden gaan voeren als ze hun zin niet krijgen. De Palestijnen hebben elk initiatief tot vrede met Israël steeds in de vuilbak gegooid gaande van "de verwijdering van de Joden bij het ontstaan van Isräel toen gepredikt door de grote mufti van Jeruzalem, de steeds wederkerende Arabische oorlogen tot het afwijzen van het vredesinitiatief van Barak en clinton in 1998. Ze hebben steeds hun eigen ruiten ingeslagen en die domme Europese politiekers hebben dit nog steeds niet door. Gelukkig zijn niet alle Europeanen zo, gelukkig maar!!!

[font=Arial]The barrier is part of a plan to erect what will be an electronic surveillance system along the length of the kingdom's frontiers - land, air and sea. The project, involving fencing and electronic detection equipment, has been in the planning stages for several years. It may cost up to $8.57bn (£4.58bn). Behind the plan is a deep-seated lack of trust in the Yemeni authorities' ability to arrest infiltrators before they make it into Saudi territory.[/font]

20 July 2004 – The United Nations General Assembly today voted overwhelmingly to demand that Israel comply with an advisory opinion issued earlier this month by the World Court, which declared the construction of a separation barrier in and around the West Bank to be illegal.

On 9 July the ICJ - the UN's principal judicial organ - issued an advisory opinion saying the separation barrier was illegal and that construction must stop immediately. The Court also said Israel should make reparations for any damage caused, and that the Assembly and the Security Council should consider what steps to take "to bring to an end the illegal situation" created by the barrier.



The resolution, brought forward by Jordan on behalf of the Arab States, also asks Secretary-General Kofi Annan to set up a register of all damage caused to "all the natural or legal persons" in connection with Israel's construction of the barrier.



The Assembly called on both the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to immediately implement their obligations under the Road Map peace plan sponsored by the UN, European Union, Russian Federation and United States, which calls for a series of parallel and reciprocal steps by each party leading to two States living side-by-side in peace by 2005.




Voting against the measure were Australia, the Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Palau and the United States. The countries that abstained were Cameroon, Canada, El Salvador, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Uganda, Uruguay and Vanuatu.



Speaking after the voting, Israel's representative voiced appreciation for those countries that had opposed the measure as well as those that had “tried to introduce some semblance of balance into the text.” Israel, he said, was not above the law and would continue to review the fence's route to protect the human rights of the Palestinians, but it rejected attempts to politicize the law.



The Observer for Palestine expressed thanks to the Assembly for the “magnificent results” that had been achieved in support of international law as well as peace and reconciliation in the Middle East. Calling the ICJ opinion “historic,” he voiced confidence that all Member States would implement the resolution's provisions with utmost seriousness.



The representative of the Netherlands, speaking on behalf of the European Union (EU), registered opposition to the route of the barrier. But the EU disagreed with elements of the advisory opinion and supported Israel's right to act in self-defence. The most important step was for all sides to desist from further violence.



The resolution's adoption today culminated a resumed emergency session which began on Friday, with consultations on the draft continuing until the last moment. Just before the vote, the sponsors announced revisions to the text which would, among others, call on “the Palestinian Authority to undertake visible efforts on the ground to arrest, disrupt and restrain individuals and groups conducting and planning violent attacks, and the Government of Israel to take no actions undermining trust, including deportations and attacks on civilians and extrajudicial killings.”

Hoe kan men nu zijn eigen oorspronkelijk gebied stelen????Trouwens waarom moet er eigenlijk een aparte Palestijnse staat zijn. Dat ze gewoon in vrede leven met de Joden in Israël maar dat is immers het probleem van vélé moslims. Zij willen immers niet in vrede leven met de Joden.

Timmeke, ik heb het gevoel dat u denkt dat alle problemen van het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict veroorzaakt zijn door de Palestijnen. Ik vind dat ze allebij schuldig zijn. Wanneer het Israëlisch leger een Palestijnse stad binnenvalt komen er ook onschuldigen om.

Ik ga akkord met u wanneer u zei dat Palestijnen en Joden in eenzelfde staat zouden moeten leven maar dat zal nu moeilijk gaan. Die muur is er nog een symbool van.

De Palestijnen had al 5 jaar in een onafhankelijk Palestina kunnen wonen met hun Arafat als president als ze het voorstel Barak-Clinton hadden aanvaard maar daar namen ze géén genoegen mee. Voor hen moet gewoon Israël verdwijnen en dat is onaanvaardbaar!!!

Aan wie het land oorspronkelijk toebehoorde doet er hier niet meer toe. Er werd in 1967 een grens vastgelegd en die moet gerespecteerd worden, that's it. Israël respecteerd die grens niet, dus zijn ze fout.

En daar ben jij fout in, in 67' is er aan de west bank nooit een grens vastgelegd . Er was een staakt het vuren, niks meer. Tot in 92 en in oslo was die grens dus onbepaald, in oslo is overeen gekomen dat de grens niet vastligt en dat verdere onderhandelingen de preciese grens moeten vastleggen. Die verdere onderhandelingen kwamen er in camp david waar arafat opstapte.

Er is dus geen grens enkel het staakt het vuren van 67, die de arabische landen willen omdat israel dan kleiner was dan nu.

Iemand die zich alleen concentreerd op de problemen in het M-O en nergens anders en die ook geen specifieke relatie heeft met die bevolking, zal dat dan wel doen voor een bepaalde reden en dan is het niet moeilijk te raden waarom.

Als een jood of een arabier uit de palestijnse gebieden anti-zionist is, dan kan ik zijn motivaties wel begrijpen. Als iemand die daar niets mee te maken heeft selectief verontwaardigd is, dan heeft het met andere redenen te maken, en zoals ik hierboven schrijf je geeft daar opnieuw het beste bewijs van.

Weeral foute informatie aan het distilleren. In Israel hebben er altijd joden gewoond sinds 2000 jaar! in 67 zijn ze alleen voor een tijdje uit Jerusalem verdreven. Dat er velen in de diaspora gegaan zijn is juist, maar er waren altijd joden in het land en op regelmatige wijze kwamen ze er ook naar terug. Palestina is trouwens practisch nooit een arabisch land geweest. Vooral ottomaans!

Wat en wie heeft er hen belet in 1949 een palestijnse staat op te richten op de west-bank en Gaza? Zeker de Israelis niet. Dus kom niet af met schijnexcuses.

Het helpt niet de geschiedenis te verdraaien, hoor. Vooral niet als men de grootste moordenaar van de 20ste eeuw als onderschrift gaat gebruiken. Die zijn massamoorden waren zeker gejustifieerd. 't zal eens tijd worden dat ze die massamoorden van Stalin ook in een wet tegen het negationisme gieten.

Elke dode burger, in Palestina, Israël of Soedan is een dode burger teveel. Ik walg van wat ik zie over Soedan en vindt dat de VN daar ook maar eens een leger moet sturen om én de islamitische agressors én de regering daar een 'lesje' te leren. En niet alleen Soedan, maar ook in Congo mag er eens grote kuis gedaan worden.
Maar noch aan Soedan, noch aan Congo of andere conflictgebieden wordt er aandacht geschonken. Enkel waar er de Islam bij betrokken is (Irak, het M-O), met uitzondering van Soedan dan, krijgt grote aandacht. Ook selectief dan?
Er gaat geen dag voorbij of we krijgen wel beelden uit Irak of Palestina door de strot geramd, terwijl we zelden iets zien van andere conflicten in de wereld. Dan is het niet zo verwonderlijk dat er op politieke fora meer aandacht gegeven wordt aan het M-O conflict dan aan wat er in Soedan gebeurd, ongeacht of er joden bij betrokken zijn of niet. Antisemitisme heeft daar niks mee te maken...

Ik ben helemaal geen Israëlbasher hoor. Er was een tijd dat ik enkel aandacht had voor het Palestijnse leed, maar dat is nu voorbij. Aan beide kanten vallen er onschuldige slachtoffers, maar die discussie is al gevoerd. Voor je mij voor Israëlbasher of erger nog, antisemiet, uitmaakt, moet je de andere topics over het M-O conflict maar eens lezen...

Zoals ik al zeg, als je weinig tot geen informatie krijgt over Soedan, hoe kan je er dan over discussiëren. De problemen in Soedan zijn pas vorige week onder mijn aandacht gebracht met een artikel in Het Belang van Limburg terwijl het conflict in het M-O al jaren oud is en we al jaren informatie hierover met bakken krijgen. Als de media geen of nauwelijks aandacht schenken aan een ander conflict kan ik er toch niet over discussiëren?

Trouwens, in Congo zijn er ook groteske conflicten en daar hoor ik je ook niet over, nochtans zijn die conflicten ouder dan wat er in Soedan gebeurd. Of komt het misschien omdat er ook in Soedan moslims betrokken zijn in het conflict? Selectieve verontwaardiging?

Dus ik mag niet verontwaardigd zijn als ik zie wat er gebeurd in een ander land? Wat is dat voor een egoïstische houding?
Waarom schrijf jij dan zoveel topics over het M-O conflict, refereer je geregeld naar Soedan of was er zo'n grote verontwaardiging omtrent de aanslagen van 9-11? Noch met Israël, noch met Soedan, noch met de VS hebben wij iets te maken. Ken het zijn dat je daar over post omdat er moslims bij betrokken zijn? Dat je dus een moslimhater bent? Dat je ook selectief verontwaardigd bent?

Het probleem in Sudan is hier al meer dan drie maand geleden gepost geweest. Het ontbrak de media dus zeker niet aan informatie om erover te schrijven of te filmen.
Terzake heeft na drie maand deze dagen zijn eerste uitzending er aan gewijd. Maar er waren wel tientallen eenzijdige uitzendinge over het M-O.

Een betoging ter herinnering van de genocide van Rwanda, ja ik ben daar zeer over verontwaardigd, gescandaliseerd en mijn acties terzake gedurende een paar jaar zal ik niet hier gaan vertellen, waren er maar een 1000tal betogers waarvan maximum 200 "blanken" en bij die blanken waren de meeste nog joden en een paar vrienden van Israel, waaronder ikzelf. De paar linkiewinkies die er waren, waren door Onkelinx opgeroepen om hun gezicht te laten zien, anders waren ze er ook niet. En betoging tegen Israel krijgt meer aandacht dan de tienjarige verjaardag van de genocide ibn Rwanda, waar WIJ als belgen ook medeschuldig aan zijn!!! En moesten er geen tien paras vermoord zijn dan was de belangstelling van de regering ook veel minder geweest!

De 53 doden, waaronder een 7-tal echte burgers in Jenin, werd door de media, inclusief de onze, een genocide genoemd, tot de waarheid naar boven kwam (herinner, zelfs een paar oude lijken werden door de palestijnen opgegraven om het aantal te doen groeien; een fake begrafenis werd georganiseerd tot de "dode" er af viel en het op lopen zette... maar ja het is toch het land van de verrijsenis :-); er was nog het "wereldschandaal" van Pater Amateis door Tzahal in koele bloede neergeschoten, ... tot die ook een paar uur later per telefoon aan het Vatikaan zijn verrijsenis kon aankondigen...;-) ) Ik zeg niet dat alles onwaar is, maar deze voorbeelden (ook Al Dura niet vergeten: http://www.truthnow.org/) tonen aan dat veel geënsceneerd is met bepaalde doeleinden.

Ik denk dat je geen moeite moet doen om die lui hun absurditeiten te bewijzen. Ze zullen iets in hun brein hebben dat wat blokkeert.

En dat gezaag over het hek dat zogezegd op palestijns grondgebied staat. Het zijn sinds 1949 nog altijd betwiste gebieden. Sinds dat ze de oorlog in 1967 verloren hebben, aanvaarden ze de grenzen van 1949. Hadden ze die gewonnen dan hadden ze nooit iets teruggegeven. Trouwens Gaza en Cisjordanie was sids 1949 ook bezet, maar toen repte er niemand over. Sinds Jordanie er afstand van gedaan heeft, moet het ineens teruggegeven worden. Dat al de palestijnen eerst Israel erkennen in de grenzen van 1949, want dat doen ze toch niet, zelfs de PLO heeft dat niet volledig geschrapt uit hun arabische tekst, en dan kan er gepraat worden over de uiteindelijke grenzen. Voor dat gebeurd blijven het betwiste gebieden.

Betekent dat in dit geval dat ze komen aanvliegen op hun B-17 tapijten?? :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
