![]() More than 90 naval personnel were killed and several dozens of them
injured when a lorry laden with explosives rammed into a Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) convoy of 15 military vehicles and buses carrying unarmed Navy troopers towards Colombo at Digampatana in Habarana, 80 km southwest of Trincomalee. According to reports, the naval convoy comprising 15 buses was parked at the Diagmpatana rendezvous point at the time of the attack. Over 150 unarmed naval personnel who were going on leave were believed to be present at the location, when a lorry laden with explosives rammed into a Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) convoy. A huge explosion has occurred causing severe destruction to both naval personnel and the civilians in the area. According to a Defence Ministry spokesman, it was the LTTE terrorists rammed the vehicle full of explosives when a large number of soldiers traveling from Colombo to Trincomalee for duty and several others traveling from Trincomalee on leave had been waiting at Habarana- Digampathaha area today (16th) at around 1:40pm to proceed with their journeys. Hospital sources said five buses filled with the victims have reached the General hospital Dambulla. Those with critical injuries have immediately been air lifted to Colombo, Kurunegala and Kandy hospitals. |
