![]() Take Action: Pressure the US to Ban Landmines >>The moment for change is now. You can play a part in pushing the United States to join the international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines, as leading US representatives attend the high-level Treaty Review Conference for the first time on November 29.
Each year, landmines claim thousands of casualties -- mainly civilians -- sometimes decades after the fighting has stopped. Landmines keep farmers from planting and builders from construction, disastrously impeding development. President Obama can get US landmine policy back on track by acceding to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, which 156 governments have already joined. The United States already complies with the treaty ’s key provisions – for years it hasn’t used, exported or produced landmines. It also strongly supports international programs to get mines out of the ground and help victims. But it has not acceded to the treaty. Tell President Obama that you support the landmine ban and want the United States to join the Mine Ban Treaty. Take Action Now >> Learn more >> Bron: politics.be
