Door de herstructurering wil General Motors 6 miljard dollar besparen en meer inzetten op elektrische en zelfrijdende auto's. In de fabrieken die gesloten worden, worden oudere modellen gebouwd, die eind volgend jaar uit productie worden genomen.

Een aantal modellen, waaronder de chevy volt (hybride plugin met een cult following, die echter volledig is afgekalfd dankzij de Chevy Bolt) verdwijnen gewoon. Ook de impala wordt een museumstuk.

Het zal er aan te komen. Verwacht u aan nog meer van dit soort berichten in de toekomt.

Het was inderdaad al zeker een maand geleden aangekondigd dat er (opnieuw) zou ingegrepen worden...

En inderdaad,niet omdat er zware verliezen zijn,maar verschillende ICE-modellen lopen volgend jaar "uit" en zijn NIET vervangen.Dus wordt meteen de bijhorende fabriek nutteloos..

Op het eerste zicht merkwaardig dat ook de produktielijn van de "Volt" dicht moet.Maar dit kan alleen maar betekenen dat GM er elders plannen mee heeft.


Bovenal mega-erg dat de regio Detroit op auto-gebied straks (zeg 10 jaar) ongeveer leeggelopen zal zijn.De werkloosheid en de ellende is er nu al onbeschrijfelijk...

Autofabrieken kijken (ver)voorbij Presidentstermijnen en het moet zijn dat GM gewoonweg niet meer weet wat het daar nog te zoeken heeft.Het is maar de vraag hoe lang het hoofdkwartier daar nog zal zijn....

I Guess dat de volgende,electrische,modellen in Mexico,zullen gemaakt worden,gelijk wat men er in Washington nog denkt over te zeggen...

Volgens geruchten zouden de volgende in rij Ford kunnen zijn.

A couple weeks ago we reported that Ford CEO Jim Hackett was expecting the company to lose $1 billion in profits because of the metal tariffs levied on steel and aluminum imports from China. NBC News reports the company will also make significant cuts to its white-collar workforce, with another report from Morgan Stanley suggesting those layoffs could total 24,000. That would constitute approximately 12 percent of Ford’s global workforce.

As you may have seen, today General Motors made an announcement regarding the future of their company. This sparked interest from the media and other shareholders about the progress of our own transformation over the last 18 months. In order to be helpful, the communications team put together an overview of the transformation that we have been undergoing and posted it to the Ford media site. You also can find that update below.

Ford has been working intensively and taking action to transform our business over the past 18 months. As we redesign and restructure our global business, we will build on our areas of strength; smartly and strategically address underperforming products and regions; and invest in the future by designing smart vehicles for a smart world.

Key actions include:

Updated footprint: We announced in July that restructuring activities could have potential EBIT charges of $11 billion, with cash-related effects of $7 billion, over the next five years. These actions will come largely outside of North America.
Transforming Product Development: We announced nine months ago that we are shifting to five flexible architectures for our vehicles -- driving a 20 percent savings in time from sketch to showroom and yielding significant efficiencies. As part of this, we've also identified ways to manage up to 70 percent of each vehicle's value through increased component sharing. We also formed a new Enterprise Product Line Management group, which establishes 10 cross-functional teams that will manage distinct product lines as end-to-end businesses and leverage Ford’s human-centered design, advanced product marketing and user experience teams to create breakthrough products and customer experiences.
Shifting Vehicle Portfolio: We've already taken actions to shift our vehicle portfolio to better meet our customers' needs going forward and strengthen our business, improving returns. This includes moving approximately 90 percent of our North American vehicle lineup volume to SUVs, pickup trucks and commercial vehicles between 2018 and by the end of 2020. The company is phasing out slow-selling traditional sedans to free up capital for new entries in growing segments.
Strong investments in Autonomous and Electrified Vehicles: Ford’s fitness actions are freeing up capital to invest in emerging businesses. Ford expects to invest $4 billion in its AV efforts through 2023, including its $1 billion investment in Argo AI. In addition, Ford is investing $11 billion in electrification from 2015 to 2022 to deliver a total of 40 vehicles globally. The company remains on track to deliver a full battery electric performance SUV that offers at least a 300-mile range in 2020.
Capacity Utilization: Ford has the best manufacturing capacity utilization in North America based on the aggressive restructuring we completed a decade ago, including our use of industry-leading three-crew operating patterns and our continued discipline around balancing capacity with consumer demand, as we have for years.
Organization Redesign: We are in the early stages of reorganizing our global salaried workforce to support the company’s strategic objectives, create a more dynamic and empowering work environment and become more fit as a business. The reorganization will result in headcount reduction over time, and this will vary based on team and location.
Strategic Alliances: We are in talks with both Volkswagen and Mahindra about potential collaborations across a number of areas of our business. We are encouraged by both sets of talks and continue working to ensure these alliances help us better serve customers globally.

GM doet nu, wat Ford al eerder in de planning had staan, alleen produceren waar veel vraag naar is, de rest van het aandeel zullen de Koreanen en Jappaners wel inpikken.
Dat laatste is mijn mening gezien ik er niet mee eens ben dat je de consument geen keuze meer laat binnen het eigen merk.

Aangevuld met een hoop plug-in hybrides maar dan met voldoende grote batterij. De rest van de ICE-modellen wordt eerder niche.

Tesla should buy another shuttered GM factory in restructuring

Last time Tesla bought a shuttered GM factory, it turned out pretty well for the electric automaker.

Now there could be another occasion for Tesla to take over a shuttered GM plant as the automaker is restructuring its operations.

Back in 2010, Tesla bought NUMMI, a car factory jointly owned by General Motors and Toyota in Fremont California, for just $42 million shortly after it was shut down.

The company gradually built the workforce back, including many former NUMMI workers, and now 8 years later, Tesla Fremont employs more employees than the original factory and it produces electric vehicles at a rate of over 300,000 units per year.

After GM cuts, Wall Street cheer turns to auto-bubble fear

That brings us to our call of the day, from Clarity Financial analyst Jesse Colombo, who sees trouble ahead for the auto sector. “Rising interest rates are threatening U.S. automobile sales and loan bubble and will eventually cause its popping,” he warned in a blog post.

“While GM’s CEO Mary Barra is spinning this move as a positive, I am highly suspicious because it is taking place at the same time that global auto sales are plunging,” explains Colombo, who warned about another bubble-soon-to-burst linked to household wealth and easy Fed policy, in October. Here’s his chart:

Colombo delivered a similar warning a year ago when Ford announced investments in Michigan, and he notes that auto maker has also recently announced an $11 billion restructuring.

Since 2010, total outstanding U.S. auto loans are up $445 billion or 64% to over $1.1 trillion as Americans used record low interest rates to finance new cars, adds Colombo. “Low interest rates lead to borrowing booms that end when interest rates go back up, which is what has been happening over the past few years,” he warns.

Last word goes to Wolf Richter at the Wolf Street blog, who says GM’s plans will cost $3.8 billion, much of which will have to be borrowed. And that is because the auto maker “blew, wasted, and annihilated $13.9 billion in cash on share buybacks over the past four years,” he says, providing this chart:



To add insult to injury, GM’s shares fell 10% during that four-year period, even if they got a bump on Monday, Richter points out. You can read his full rant here.

Eigenlijk kapituleert GM en trekt zich terug uit de meeste segmenten van de automarkt.
Ironisch dat die "Japanners" al vele decennia vooral assembleren in de VS zelf....

Het is eigenlijk onduidelijk hoe GM,tot een paar decennia geleden de grootste autofabrikant van de planeet,eigenlijk de toekomst op lange termijn ziet.Heeft het nog iets te maken met auto's.....
