Black Sea Highway finally opens after 20 years
The 542-kilometer highway built along Turkey's Black Sea coastline,
the construction of which started some 20 years ago, is finally
opening to traffic on Saturday with the participation of Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.

The prime minister will arrive at the opening ceremony by car as part
of a trip along the highway begun in Samsun on Friday night and
finishing in Artvin in Sunday after visits to Ordu, Rize and Trabzon.

The first tender for the highway -- for the Çarşıbaşı-Trabzon-Araklı
section -- was held 1987. The project was partly the result of the
effort of Black Sea deputy Rasim ZaimoÄŸlu to draw both the public and
politicians' attention to the necessity and benefits of such a major
project. He initiated many campaigns to collect signatures from people
all around Turkey to show the public's will and support for the
project. However, parliamentary debates on the project dragged on for
years and construction did not begin until 1998, when former Prime
Minister Mesut Yılmaz initiated a ground-breaking ceremony in Rize.

About 300 kilometers of the highway between Samsun and the Sarp border
gate -- between Turkey and Georgia -- were completed by 2004.

Many environmentalists objected to the project, and work in Trabzon
was halted by a regional administrative court’s decision citing the
threat to the environmental posed by the project. The Council of State
later overturned that decision, allowing construction to resume. The
highway was also dogged by budgetary issues and remained half-complete
for several years because the government did not allocate enough money
for its construction. In 2003 the Corruption Research Commission filed
a suit against former Minister of Public Works and Settlement YaÅŸar
Topçu for corrupt administration of the highway’s construction.. Topçu
was tried at the Supreme Court and sentenced to 14 months in jail. He
was freed in May 27, 2006 with an amnesty introduced by RahÅŸan Ecevit,
the wife of late former Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit. The Justice and
Development Party (AK Party) administration continued the construction
with the same engineers and finished the remaining 75 percent of the
highway in just four years. The highway, which cost nearly $4.2
billion, has 263 bridges, the total length of which is 27 kilometers,
12 “single tube tunnels 41 kilometers in total length and 20 “double
tube tunnels running for a total of 18.5 kilometers. The highway is
expected to bring in YTL 552.3 million to the state each year.

Renovation of Sarp border gate on the way

Projects to improve the Sarp border gate are in the pipeline. Turkish
Union of Chambers and Commodities Exchanges (TOBB) engineers met with
Georgian authorities on April 4 and 5 to discuss the renovation of the
Sarp-Sarpi border crossings. Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(TTSO) Chairman and TOBB board member Åžadan Eren said the renovation
of the Sarp Gate would begin in September and finish within one year
at most.

Belgie wonen ?
Van Turken kun je nog leren als het over gastvrijheid gaat mijn

Alllez ,ik ben benieuw wat je nu weer gaat verzinnen (ik geniet er
