Standaard Ahrar : those in power should leave now.

Al Qaeda strikes at the heart of Iraq's democracy. Meanwhile, our politicians are deadlocked in a debate over who will keep control over our people and our oil. America is involved in a race to draw down its troops, and only one party-Ahrar-remains to stand up for the Iraqi people. Ahrar leader Ayad Jamal Aldin commented today:

"Mr Zebari is wrong-This is not about America leaving or staying in Iraq. It is about the crossroads before our country: If the current crop of corrupt politicians remain in power, Iraq can never be free. Their weakness makes them pawns of Iran and if we do not change now, our fate will be the same as that tragic country."

"Here is the truth: Iraq will not be free if America runs things. And we will not be free if America leaves only to allow terrorists and the Iranian regime run things. We must decide our future. Every Iraqi must ask themselves today, 'are we willing to pass this mess onto our children? Or are we ready to build a new secure future and a new Iraq?'"

"If we abandon our streets in the hope of being protected by others - then we abandon our future and the future of our children."

"My message is clear: No one is going to secure our streets and our country for us-we must do that for ourselves. Those in power have failed to build our security and have only built corruption. Now they plead for more time-from us and America-so that they can keep power and continue their failed leadership. It is our turn now-it is time to sweep the failed leadership out of the way and replace them with new leaders."

"We need fresh faces, fresh ideas and real strength to build a new Iraq, where the people are truly free, and we walk our streets without fear. To those in power I say step down-leave now-or we will make you leave in January!"

"To the Iraqi people, I say that if our current leaders are not strong enough to lead us to security-I will. Together Iraqis are strong. Ahrar will lead Iraq, united as one to true freedom, where the lights shine bright and the water flows. A nation where work is plentiful, and where our streets and our children's future are secure. If you believe in this future, join me."

About Ayad Jamal Aldin:

Ayad Jamal Aldin is a young, Shia cleric, best known for his consistent campaigning for a new, secular Iraq. He first rose to prominence at the Nasiriyah conference in March 2003, shortly before the fall of Saddam, where he called for a state free of religion, the turban and other theological symbols. In 2005, he was elected as one of the 25 MPs on the Iraqi National List, but withdrew in 2009 after becoming disenchanted with Iyad Allawi's overtures to Iran. He wants complete independence from Iranian interference in Iraq. He now leads the Ahrar party for the 2010 election to the Council of Representatives, to clean up corruption and create a strong, secure and liberated Iraq for the future.
