![]() The Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) has called for the immediate cease to the violence occurring in Syria. The level of violence and brutality that have been witnessed, such as the recent massacres of civilians, make this conflict reminiscent of a civil war. The brutality of the Syrian army as well as the crowd funding of the Free Syrian army are indicators of a civil conflict that will last for years to come and threatens to devastate the lives of those in the country and the wider region.
The resignation of President Assad is necessary to give way to a reconciliation process of which the result could be new elections and a more democratic government. All parties and the powers represented in the Security Council of the United Nations need to commit to the Kofi Annan Peace Plan and need to ensure it is implemented swiftly. A ban to weapon imports to the country in an essential measure, along with a UN-led peace keeping mission in order to restore security in the region. The situation is Syria has demonstrated that the current international security architecture is not capable of resolving conflicts such as these adequately. Therefore FYEG calls for the urgent reform of the structures currently in place. We need the Security Council to be democratised and the veto-powers to be withdrawn. We also call for the establishment of a UN agency that focuses on the prevention of the outbreak of violence, through an effective early warning system. It should monitor all conflict situations and deliver in-depth information to better understand conflict situations and engage at an early stage in peaceful means to prevent their escalation.
