Situation



- It is estimated that at least half the population of Vanuatu (132,000) have been affected, of which at least 54,000 are children.

- We expect that many homes in Vanuatu have been destroyed as they are built with natural and local materials such as thatched and corrugated roofs that are vulnerable to strong winds and floods.

- Over 80% of the population of Vanuatu is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood, with 13% living below the national poverty line. It is expected that many plantations and gardens will be destroyed, putting the population at risk of malnutrition.

- Schools, churches and community halls are being used as emergency shelters. Many of these buildings are likely to have suffered structural damage. Lifeline facilities like hospitals, electrical utilities, water supply and telephone systems are most likely severely damaged.

- We know that power and water supply has been affected across Vanuatu, including in the capital city Port Vila.

- Other Pacific Island countries have been severely affected, including the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Kiribati. The government of Tuvalu has already asked for assistance.

- Humanitarian workers are on the ground in the affected countries, and government staff are also affected.
