Student protests against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led to 440 lives lost, ending not just her 16-year reign but also her political career

A student-led movement against a quota system which secured government jobs for certain groups gathered momentum after July 16 in Bangladesh, when the then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina described the protesters as the ‘children of Razakars’, a word to describe the reviled volunteers of the Pakistani Army, which committed untold atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.

The court-mandated quota system for public employment reserved 56% of all jobs for certain categories, including 30% for the family members of those who had participated in the 1971 Liberation War. The student community decried this as political patronage, demanding a merit-based hiring process.

The order issued on June 5 catapulted a major movement against the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government, which had been in power for the past 16 years.

While the Supreme Court rejected the lower court’s order, the demonstrations continued and the prime minister lost control of them on August 4. The next day, a mob of nearly half a million, led mainly by students, approached her residence.

Her associates advised her to resign. Initially, she refused and decided to step-up the counter-offensive. The security establishment did not accede to the plan and it facilitated a conversation between the prime minister and her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, formerly the chief adviser.

Following his advice, Hasina resigned and left the country with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana on the afternoon of August 5.

Escalatie van radicaal moslimgeweld in Bangladesh

Met het vertrek van oud-premier Sheikh Hasina wordt de hindoeïstische gemeenschap in Bangladesh geconfronteerd met een golf van geweld en plunderingen. Volgens de minderheidsgroep BHBCUC zijn honderden huizen, bedrijven en tempels van hindoes in de afgelopen 24 uur doelwit geworden van aanvallen. Antropoloog Shashi Roopram vindt het verbijsterend dat de Nederlandse politiek zich niet meer hiertegen uitspreekt.

Tussen de 200 en 300 hindoeïstische huizen en bedrijven zijn beschadigd sinds Hasina's vertrek op maandag, vertelt BHBCUC-secretaris Rana Dasgupta aan persbureau Reuters. Ook meldt hij dat 15 tot 20 tempels in heel Bangladesh zijn vernield en dat minstens 40 leden van de gemeenschap gewond zijn geraakt.

“De gemeenschappelijke wreedheden begonnen enkele uren voordat ze aftrad,” vertelt Dasgupta bij Reuters. “Hoewel er geen doden zijn gevallen, zijn er wel gewonden. Huizen, bedrijven en tempels van minderheden, vooral hindoes, zijn doelbewust aangevallen, geplunderd en vernield.”

'Afschuwelijke' situatie
De Bengaalse bevolking bestaat voor zo'n 8 procent uit hindoes. Onder Hasina's bewind werd deze religieuze minderheidsgroep grotendeels beschermd. Maar nu, met de verwachte machtsovername door een oppositieblok met een hardline islamitische partij, voelen zij zich meer dan ooit kwetsbaar. Zo beschrijft Manindra Kumar Nath de situatie in Bangladesh als 'afschuwelijk'. “Zelfs vandaag nog krijgen we oproepen van mensen die ons smeken om hun leven te redden, maar we krijgen geen enkele steun.”

Het vertrek van Sheikh Hasina leidt tot chaos in het land, met protesten die uitmonden in aanvallen op gebouwen en musea die verbonden zijn met Hasina's partij, Awami League. Overheidsfunctionarissen worden vervolgd en opgehangen aan bruggen door een woedende menigte, meldt een actiegroep op X. In totaal zijn er al bijna driehonderd mensen omgekomen sinds begin juli.

Studentenleiders die de protesten tegen Hasina leiden, roepen herhaaldelijk op om minderheidsgemeenschappen met rust te laten. Desondanks voelen hindoeïstische leiders zich kwetsbaar en machteloos door het gebrek aan een functionerende regering.

Twee maten?
Tot nu toe besteden Nederlandse politici geen enkele aandacht aan het religieus getinte geweld in Bangladesh. Alleen PVV-leider Geert Wilders heeft zich uitgesproken. 'Het geweld tegen Hindoes in Bangladesh is afschuwelijk. Ze worden vermoord en hun huizen en tempels worden verbrand door barbaarse islamitische bendes. Dit moet onmiddellijk stoppen!' schreef hij dinsdagochtend op X.

Antropoloog Shashi Roopram vindt het verbijsterend dat andere partijen zich niet uitspreken. Volgens hem wordt er gemeten met twee maten. 'Nu hindoes in Bangladesh worden afgeslacht zijn de critici van radicaal-rechts muisstil. Waar zijn de afkeuringen van de PvdA, GL, D66 etc? Alleen de PVV keurt het geweld af. The protesters are demanding reforms to the recruitment system for public sector jobs.

Tensions escalated on Monday, when scores of protesters clashed with police and pro-government activists at Dhaka University in the country’s capital. The government shut all public and private universities indefinitely on Wednesday and sent riot police and paramilitary forces to campuses. On Thursday, thousands of protesters stormed the office of the state broadcaster BTV and set fire to the building.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had appeared on the network one day earlier to call for peace. The protests are the biggest since Hasina was reelected for a fifth term earlier this year.

The exact death toll in the clashes is unclear. Anadolu reported on Friday, citing police sources, that 39 people were confirmed dead. AFP and Al Jazeera have reported the death toll at 32, while Reuters has said 13 people were killed in clashes on Thursday, adding to six people killed earlier this week.

According to Bangladeshi newspaper the Daily Prothom Alo, some 27 people have been killed in the incidents and more than 1,500 injured. The outlet reported that fresh clashes broke out between the protesters and the police in various areas of the capital on Friday. Police are said to have fired stun grenades, tear gas shells, and rubber bullets.

The websites of other major Bangladeshi newspapers were either not accessible or had not been updated since Thursday. Television news channels were off air on Friday morning and telecommunications were severely disrupted.

The government has also ordered a countrywide shutdown of its mobile internet network. Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the junior telecommunications minister, told AFP that it was necessary to “ensure the security of citizens.” According to Dhaka residents who spoke to RT via online messengers on Thursday night, some ISP-based Wi-Fi networks were still available while mobile internet was cut off through the city.

Protesters have been demanding that the government abolish special quotas allowing the descendants of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence from Pakistan in 1971 to receive government jobs. Instead, they are demanding recruitment on a merit-based system. At present, 30% of government jobs are reserved for veterans’ families.

The quota system was scrapped in 2018, but in June this year the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal was unconstitutional. On July 10, the Supreme Court suspended the quotas and the case is pending there. Hasina has urged the demonstrators to place their trust in the Supreme Court.

Activists have claimed that the system is discriminatory and that it favors allies of the ruling Awami League party, which spearheaded the independence movement. Hasina is a daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of the independence movement and the “founding father” of the country. He was assassinated in 1975 along with most of his family members by a group of army officials.

They asked if AC/DC, Metallica, and the rest if they would consider doing this concert for free, they all agreed, this concert was put together in two weeks and added to the end of a long world tour, and the rest is literally HISTORY! Just a few years earlier we were still in the cold war, living in fear of a possible nuclear war with the Soviets, so for these groups to be allowed into the Soviet Union, made possible by all these students who fought for their rights, notice there weren't any women there, or not many anyway. Still a very scary time in the world and there. The bands themselves didn't know what to expect and were scared, military everywhere.
