The debate on religion transcends both the big country/small country divide as well as the federalist - intergovernmentalist divide. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The Convention is set to touch upon the difficult issue of religion during its plenary session at the end of this week. Article two, which sets out the values of the Union, has come in for some heavy lobbying from Convention members wanting a reference to God or at least Europe's spiritual heritage. Representatives on the Convention from the EPP conservative group - Europe's biggest political family - have called for a reference to a God based on the Polish constitution. This reads: "The Union's values include the values of those who believe in God as the source of truth, justice, good and beauty as well as of those who do not share such a belief but respect these universal values arising from other sources." Other delegates pushing for some sort of religious reference include government the representative from Italy, Gianfranco Fini, and from Slovakia, Ivan Korcok. Opponents of any mention of religion include delegates from France, the Nordic countries and the Netherlands. The Socialists in the Convention met two weeks ago to discuss God in the Convention. Guiliano Amato, vice-president of the Convention summed up the meeting by saying that "amendments on religious matters are very much a minority." Separation of Church and state Pervench Berès, a French MEP, has tabled an amendment asking for the separation of church and state - as is the case in her own country. Convention president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing shares this view. In an interview with a German weekly in January, he said that Europeans live in a purely secular-political system where religion does not play a role. Mr Giscard has also suggested that a religious reference would not be appropriate because the articles need to be legally viable - that is more concrete than religious values. The Commission, for its part, is keeping quite quiet on the matter. A spokesman said last week that "institutions of Europe are non-religious," - the Commission has yet to make any formal utterance on the matter. The debate is also being followed with interest by the Vatican. Last year Pope John Paul II met Mr Giscard to push the case for a reference to God. Jewish, Muslim, secular and humanist organisations have, by contrast, been less vocal about their views. This article is one of 16 to be debated during the plenary session on Thursday and Friday. The amendments concerning religion are just a few of a flood of suggestions to come from the Convention floor. At the last count there were 1038 amendments, spokesman Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut said. The complete draft EU constitution is set to be handed over to governments in June. ....
