![]() Erik Solheim, the Tiger-friendly Norwegian who has operated in this
country under the guise of peace-facilitator has arrived in Colombo. The so-called Norwegian effort at seeking peace on the highly explosive ethnic crisis has been a monumental failure in respect of the ideal that was widely propagated. In reality it has become clear that Norway only helped to preserve the LTTE, a terrorist outfit and even give it all the time and lattitude to equip itself as a powerful military oarganization. The Government of Sri Lanka has a responsibility to maintain Law and Order and the LTTE has been able to install a reign of terror especially in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The LTTE is a Gang of Criminals and certainly not freedom fighters. Helped by Norway and the Sri Lankan Government that probably still thinks the European is next to God, the LTTE has been allowed to grow into a monstrous force of evil. "Sudhadoration" is a peculiar failing of the Sri Lankans, an insult to our dignity and honour. One of Sri Lanka's finest writers Tarzie Vittachi called it the "Subservient adoration of the White Sahib", and anyone white is a sahib who should be salaamed servilely. The LTTE has exploited the ethnic issue to advantage but it must be understood that this terrorist outfit and Tamils are two different issues. If the rights of the Tamils are to be enshrined, the LTTE should be dealt with as a Law and Order problem. Any kind of settlement with the LTTE will only trap the Tamils into the claws of the Tigers who only want a mafia state. It is time for Norway to bow out of Sri Lankan affairs. They have not served the interests of Sri Lanka and especially that of the Tamils. A good point, though a minute one, illustrates the whole tragedy. When 2nd-Grade educated Su Pa Thamilselvan returned from Oslo in his bags were equipment of war and violence and he was allowed to bring them into the country. Waiting for his arrival at Katunayake were representives from the Norwegian mission in Colombo. Here is a guy, a member of a criminal gang who should be arraigned before the International Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity and yet he is afforded diplomatic honours on arrival on Sri Lankan soil. Now that Erik Solheim is here one wonders whether his baggage was checked on arrival. He possibly could have brought some war-related equipment to be handed over to the LTTE. This observation should not be taken as meaning to insult a visitor to the country but expressed in concern about a visitor who obviously favours the preservation and promotion of a terror organization. Solheim and the likes of him must appreciate, understand and accept that the Tamil question cannot be solved by talking to the Tigers, even worse, trying to preserve them. Incidentally, on the Allaipiddy issue, talking to the Rev Father Anthony Amalraj is not going to help to have a fair idea of the tragedy that occurred there. Worse, to have him preside at a conference to understand the problem. This would be like talking to the fox about what happened to the chicken house one night. He was certainly a party to many families leaving Allaipiddy, an exercise the LTTE wanted so badly. The Tigers want human shields in Wanni. If 60 buses were found to transport, there must have been quite a lot of work that had gone into planning such an exodus. And the Catholic Church has identified itself with Tiger interests in the North and East very much. |
