Last week, the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, ran an article explaining why
many French Jews are throwing their support behind far-right
presidential candidate, Jean-Marie Le Pen.

According to the Haaretz article, French Jews - threatened by Muslim
immigrants and disillusioned with the establishment's handling of
anti-Semitic violence and vandalism - find Le Pen's conservative stance
on immigration and Muslim integration appealing:

"In the past, Jews did not vote for Le Pen because they saw him as
a racist and a xenophobe. As long as they felt protected, they condemned
him and his opinions. But in light of their feeling that the state has
abandoned them, some see him as a worthy address."

Abdallah Bourakba, 54, is a divorced father of three whose parents came
to Paris in the 1950s from Algeria. He is unemployed and looking for a
job as a salesman. He will vote for Le Pen on April 22. "When my father
came here, he knew he had to work damned hard. New immigrants think
France is an El Dorado. They are parasites, want everything on a plate
and are costing us a billion euros a year," he said.

Murad Asfoure is a 25-year-old history student with Moroccan parents.
Married with a baby daughter and living in Dijon, the Burgundy capital,
he works at an international courier company. He plans to join the
National Front.

"Le Pen has a moral conception of politics. He wants to restore the
importance of the family. He wants to bang the table and say no to the
licentiousness. France is in a dire state. Look at the porn on
television; look at the drugs," he said.

The influx of new voters has been "overwhelming," said Farid Smahi, a
Paris regional councillor and for years the National Front's only
prominent Muslim. He claimed to have registered 3,500 new Muslim members
and while it is unlikely to have much effect on the election, even
opponents agree there is a shift.

Sophia Chikirou, a member of the Socialist Party's National Council,
lamented that in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, several Muslim
businessmen have come out in support for Mr Le Pen. "They want to punish
those who give a bad name to other immigrants, to distance themselves at
all costs from illegal immigrants, or squatters or drug dealers."

She said Mr Le Pen had become less extreme - he features a black person
in his posters for the first time. "In my area, one more often hears the
phrase 'Sarko facho' than 'Le Pen facho'," she said.
