Tot hun eigen verrassing en verbazing is het nummer 'When The Lady Smiles’ van de Nederlandse rockband Golden Earring een van de campagneliedjes van Hillary Clinton.
Wellicht kent Hillary de inhoud van deze song niet, net zo min als de video die in 1984 de release van de song kracht moest bijzetten. Hierin wordt een non verkracht en peuzelt een hond de hersenen van een dader op.

Ook de tekst van 'When the Lady smiles’ klinkt alleszins weinig presidentieel. “My friends tell me, she’s the beast inside your paradise” ('Mijn vrienden vertellen me, ze is het beest in je paradijs’), zo klinkt het. Hillary trapt daarmee in dezelfde val als Ronald Reagan, die in de jaren tachtig 'Born in the USA’, een bijtende kritiek op het Amerika van toen, tot zijn lijflied koos. Alleen maar omdat de hit zo lekker klonk.
