Historians suggest Myers may have studied architecture under Samuel Sloan before serving in the Civil War.

In 1881, he won the competition for the best design for the new Texas capitol in Austin.

Other examples of his work are the parliament buildings in Rio de Janeiro, the asylum building in Mexico City, as well as multiple courthouses, churches, hospitals, and city halls throughout the United States.

During the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, Myers served on the Board of Examiners for the fair's buildings.

Myers died at home in Detroit on March 5, 1909. The day following his death, his obituary was shown in The New York Times. The only known portrait of Myers hangs in the Elijah Myers room of the Michigan State Capitol.

He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. His grave was unmarked until 2009, when funds were raised and a memorial erected by the Elijah E. Myers Memorial Commission.[2]

The Old City Hall occupies a site that previously accommodated three notable buildings, all demolished for the new structure.

A design competition was held in 1883, with a design by Elijah E. Myers of Detroit selected in 1884.

A new competition was held, and a design by Wait & Cutter of Boston was selected. Despite this, later that year the city council reversed its former decision and moved forward with the Myers design.

Texas State Capitol

The Texas State Capitol is the capitol and seat of government of the U.S. state of Texas. Located in downtown Austin, Texas, the structure houses the offices and chambers of the Texas Legislature and of the Governor of Texas. Designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed from 1882 to 1888

The current Texas State Capitol is the fourth building to serve that purpose in Austin. The first was a two-room wooden structure (located on the northeast corner of 8th St and Colorado St) which served as the national capitol of the Texas Republic and continued as the seat of government upon Texas' admission to the Union. The second Texas capitol was built of limestone in 1853, on the same site as the present capitol in Austin; it was destroyed by fire in 1881, but plans had already been made to replace it with a new, much larger structure. A temporary capitol was then constructed across the street at 11th St and Congress Ave in 1882. The temporary capitol later burned down in a fire also in 1899. [6][7]

In 1873, to alleviate the overcrowding at the Kalamazoo psychiatric hospital, the Michigan state legislature appropriated $400,000 for the construction of a second hospital in eastern Michigan.[4] Cities in the area were requested to bid for the project, and Pontiac won out over Detroit and other cities. The architect for the original main hospital was Elijah E. Myers, who also served as the architect for the current Michigan State Capitol in Lansing.[3] The asylum opened its doors five years later, on August 1, 1878

First Presbyterian Church, Albion, Michigan

The first church was built in 1840 on the corner of Clinton and Erie streets.

In 1857 the congregation erected a new church on this site; it burned in 1873.

The third church, completed in 1879, also burned, and the present one was built in 1884.

San Joaquin County Courthouse, Stockton

Of all the substantial buildings erected in the late-19th-century boom years in Stockton ("destined to become the Chicago of the West," according to one writer at the time), the courthouse was the most impressive. Among its many marvels was a gas well "providing heat and light without cost to taxpayers" and a statue of Justice atop a dome that rose 172 feet above the street. The building was demolished in 1961 to make room for a new courthouse.

Bijna geen ziel te bekennen...

Het gebouw kwam tot stand in de jaren 1898-1899 en was het werk van de gekende architect CHAUES DE WULF met als aannemer de Gebroeders DEMEYER uit Gent

Tijd dat we een stapje verder gaan, we hebben nu extensief naar architectuur gekeken, en we gaan dat blijven doen, maar nu gaan we even het fenomeen "mudflood" bekijken.



We kunnen niet ontkennen dat we in al die oude foto's vaak zien dat de gebouwen een ongelooflijke schoonheid laten zien, maar dat vaak de wegen eromheen onderontwikkeld zijn, of zelfs compleet ontbreken. Gebouwen staan vaak compleet geisoleerd.



Ramen zijn vaak te zien op grondniveau, half begraven. Ingangen vaak bereikbaar via een trap. Waarom zou men zo bouwen? En we zien dat vandaag ook nog vaak, in elke stad.







Vaak vinden we ook foto's waarvan we ons kunnen afvragen wat er aan de hand is...

Er zijn zelfs heel oude sites van voor de zondvloed, waar ge op 1 punt door te fluisteren uzelf aan 1000 plus mensen verstaanbaar kunt maken. Het weerklinken van geluid, en zoals het daarboven naar beneden afstraalt; was heel belangrijk in de oudere wereldordes.

Nu vangen ze uw psyche en weerklinkt de imitatie van de tegenstander.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia :

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was founded in 1805 by painter and scientist Charles Willson Peale, sculptor William Rush, and other artists and business leaders.[5] Its first building on Chestnut and 10th Streets in Center City Philadelphia was designed by John Dorsey and opened in 1806

The academy had to be reconstructed after the fire of 1845. The new building by architect Richard Arthington Gilpin opened in 1847 and was demolished in 1870, following damage by a storm.

They commissioned the current Furness-Hewitt building, which was constructed from 1871. It opened as part of the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition.

1895 - Emerson School was built. Emerson and Washington were the first public schools in Oklahoma City.

1911 - Emerson was destroyed by a fire.

Mooi gebouw, in the middle of nowhere, geen straten, geen kat te zien, ramen op grondniveau en een trap voor de ingang. En weer die rare lucht en dezelfde zware funderingsstenen. Best geen vragen stellen.

Thomas Annan (Dairsie (Fife), 1829 — Lenzie, 14 december 1887) was een Schots fotograaf, vooral actief in de decennia 1855-1875.

Aanvankelijk fotografeerde Annan vooral architectonische onderwerpen, met name oude landhuizen en kastelen. Later legde hij zich ook toe op het maken van portretten en verwierf bekendheid met zijn foto’s van David Livingstone en Horatio McCulloch. Ook maakte hij veel stadsgezichten van Glasgow. In 1866 kreeg Annan van het stadsbestuur opdracht om de sloppen van Glasgow te fotograferen, die op de nominatie stonden om gesloopt te worden. Het resulteerde in een reeks foto’s die een uniek tijdsbeeld geven van het Glasgow in de jaren zestig van de negentiende eeuw.

Zijn foto's van de sloppenwijken geven een heel ander zicht op de stad, smalle straten, armoede, dagelijks overleven, maar steeds een zware steen en constructie :
