Michael Moore's New Book, "Dude Where's My Country?" Hits the Streets This Tuesday

I have written a new book, and this Tuesday it’s being released. It’s called, “DUDE, WHERE’S MY COUNTRY?” Because its content is likely to upset more than a few people, the publisher has “embargoed” the book until midnight Monday (which means no store or media outlet or anyone has access to a copy of the book until then).

They have taken these measures because I have written a book that seeks not to defeat the Bush people next year, but to have them removed from Washington right now. I know, I’m not asking for much. But I have spent the better part of the past year researching and writing this new book, and when you read it you’ll see why the current criminal investigation of the White House for outing a CIA agent in revenge is, in my opinion, just the tip of the iceberg. I can only hope that my book will make a small contribution toward that day when we’ll see one long perp walk of administration officials in handcuffs being led out of the White House and into a waiting paddy wagon. Like I said, I’m not asking for much.

“Dude, Where’s My Country?” is also my humble attempt to violate the Patriot Act on every single page of the book. And, I have learned that many want to get on John Ashcroft’s evildoer list with me. There are already a record number of orders from bookstores across the country. The first printing alone is almost one million copies (my last book’s first printing was 50,000). If you get the New York Times, you may have noticed a mysterious ad for the past four days in the Arts section. Each day, the ad simply asks a new, pointed question of Mr. Bush. They are questions from my new book, from a chapter entitled, “Seven Questions for George of Arabia.” We are running one ad each day until the book comes out on Tuesday. In case you’ve missed them, here are the first four:

1. Dear Mr. Bush, is it true that the bin Ladens have had business relations with you and your family off and on for the past 25 years?
2. Dear “Mr. President,” what is the “special relationship” between the Bushes and the Saudi royal family?
3. Dear “Mr. President,” who attacked the United States on September 11th—a guy on dialysis from a cave in Afghanistan, or our friends, the Saudi Arabians?

As I head out on my book tour this morning, I just wanted to drop you a note of thanks for making my new book #1 on Amazon.com, a place it's held now for the past week.

By now, most of you have probably seen the "Dude, Where's My Country?" cover of the Bush statue being toppled. Today is the 6-month anniversary of the Baghdad photo-op where the Saddam statue came a tumblin' down ("We won! We won! We...um...what did we do? Right! WE WON!"). We thought we'd celebrate by taking out a full page ad in today's New York Times -- of us toppling Bush! It doubles as a great poster that you can just rip out of the paper and hang on your wall. And, please, let this be the end of wimpy, wishy-washy Democrats like Gray Davis who are really Republicans. The American public hates b.s. and hates fakes. We -- you -- need to think about getting people to run for office who STAND for something. Time is running out.

Disney Has Blocked the Distribution of My New Film... by Michael Moore

Friends,

I would have hoped by now that I would be able to put my work out to the public without having to experience the profound censorship obstacles I often seem to encounter.

Yesterday I was told that Disney, the studio that owns Miramax, has officially decided to prohibit our producer, Miramax, from distributing my new film, "Fahrenheit 911." The reason? According to today's (May 5) New York Times, it might "endanger" millions of dollars of tax breaks Disney receives from the state of Florida because the film will "anger" the Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush. The story is on page one of the Times and you can read it here (Disney Forbidding Distribution of Film That Criticizes Bush).

The whole story behind this (and other attempts) to kill our movie will be told in more detail as the days and weeks go on. For nearly a year, this struggle has been a lesson in just how difficult it is in this country to create a piece of art that might upset those in charge (well, OK, sorry -- it WILL upset them...big time. Did I mention it's a comedy?). All I can say is, thank God for Harvey Weinstein and Miramax who have stood by me during the entire production of this movie.

There is much more to tell, but right now I am in the lab working on the print to take to the Cannes Film Festival next week (we have been chosen as one of the 18 films in competition). I will tell you this: Some people may be afraid of this movie because of what it will show. But there's nothing they can do about it now because it's done, it's awesome, and if I have anything to say about it, you'll see it this summer -- because, after all, it is a free country.

Bush wil 25 miljard extra voor oorlog Irak

President Bush heeft het Amerikaanse Congres woensdag om 25 miljard dollar extra gevraagd voor militaire operaties in Irak. Het verzoek voor het zogenoemde reservefonds is in weerwil van een eerdere belofte van Bush geen verzoeken om extra geld in te dienen voor de verkiezingen van november.

Het Witte Huis had lang volgehouden dat het voorlopig geen extra geld nodig zou hebben voor de oorlogen in Irak en Afghanistan. Tot nu toe was er 160 miljard dollar voor uitgetrokken. De extra 25 miljard komt ten laste van het begrotingsjaar 2005, dat op 1 oktober begint.

Michael Moore krijgt in Europa veel meer aandacht dan in eigen land. In Amerika is hij helemaal geen luis in de pels van Bush, integendeel. Zijn standpunten zijn zo extreem en zijn stiijl zo ergerlijk dat hij eerder een aanwinst is voor de Republikeinen : hoe meer die man op TV komt, hoe beter.

Thank you for all the incredible letters of support as my film crew and I once again slog our way through the corporate media madhouse. Does it ever end? Are we ever going to get control of our "free press" again? Can you wish upon a star?

The Disney spin machine has been working overtime dealing with this censorship debacle of theirs. I don't think they thought they would ever be outed. After all, they know that all of us are supposed to adhere to the unwritten Hollywood Code: Never tell the public how business is done here, never let them have a peek at the man behind the curtain.

Disney has been hoping for nearly a year that they could keep this thing quiet. As I promised on Wednesday, here are the details behind my sordid adventure with the Magic Kingdom:

In April of 2003, I signed a deal with Miramax, a division of the Walt Disney Co., to finance and distribute my next movie, Fahrenheit 9/11. (The original financier had backed out; I will tell that story at a later date.) In my contract it is stated that Miramax will distribute my film in the U.S. through Disney's distribution arm, Buena Vista Distribution. It also gives Miramax the rights to distribute and sell the movie around the world.

A month later, after shooting started, Michael Eisner insisted on meeting with my agent, Ari Emanuel. Eisner was furious that Miramax signed this deal with me. According to Mr. Emanuel, Eisner said he would never let my film be distributed through Disney even though Mr. Eisner had not seen any footage or even read the outline of the film. Eisner told my agent that he did not want to anger Jeb Bush, the governor of Florida. The movie, he believed, would complicate an already complicated situation with current and future Disney projects in Florida, and that many millions of dollars of tax breaks and incentives were at stake.

But Michael Eisner did not call Miramax and tell them to stop my film. Not only that, for the next year, SIX MILLION dollars of DISNEY money continued to flow into the production of making my movie. Miramax assured me that there were no distribution problems with my film.

But then, a few weeks ago when Fahrenheit 9/11 was selected to be in the Cannes Film Festival, Disney sent a low-level production executive to New York to watch the film (to this day, Michael Eisner has not seen the film). This exec was enthusiastic throughout the viewing. He laughed, he cried and at the end he thanked us. "This film is explosive," he exclaimed, and we took that as a positive sign. But "explosive" for these guys is only a good word when it comes to blowing up things in movies. OUR kind of "explosive" is what they want to run from as fast as they can.

Miramax did their best to convince Disney to go ahead as planned with our film. Disney contractually can only stop Miramax from releasing a film if it has received an NC-17 rating (ours will be rated PG-13 or R).

According to yesterday's New York Times, the issue of whether to release Fahrenheit 9/11 was discussed at Disney's board meeting last week. It was decided that Disney should not distribute our movie.

Earlier this week we got the final, official call: Disney will not put out Fahrenheit 9/11. When the story broke in the New York Times, Disney, instead of telling the truth, turned into Pinocchio.

Here are my favorite nuggets that have come out of the mouths of their spinmeisters (roughly quoted):

"Michael Moore has known for a year that we will not distribute this movie, so this is not news." Yes, that is what I thought, too, except Disney kept sending us all that money to make the movie. Miramax said there was no problem. I got the idea that everything was fine.

"It is not in the best interests of our company to distribute a partisan political film that may offend some of our customers." Hmmm. Disney doesn't distribute work that has partisan politics? Disney distributes and syndicates the Sean Hannity radio show every day? I get to listen to Rush Limbaugh every day on Disney-owned WABC. I also seem to remember that Disney distributed a very partisan political movie during a Congressional election year, 1998—a film called The Big One... by, um... ME!

"Fahrenheit 9/11 is not the Disney brand; we put out family oriented films." So true. That's why the #1 Disney film in theaters right now is a film called, KILL BILL, VOL. 2. This excellent Miramax film, along with other classics like Pulp Fiction, have all been distributed by Disney. That's why Miramax exists -- to provide an ALTERNATIVE to the usual Disney fare. And, unless they were NC-17, Disney has distributed them.

"Mr. Moore is doing this as a publicity stunt." Michael Eisner reportedly said this the other day while he was at a publicity stunt cutting the ribbon for the new "Tower of Terror" ride (what a pleasant name considering what the country has gone through recently) at Disney's California Adventure Park. Let me tell you something: NO filmmaker wants to go through this kind of controversy. It does NOT sell tickets (I can cite many examples of movies who have had to change distributors at the last minute and all have failed). I made this movie so people could see it as soon as possible. This is a huge and unwanted distraction. I want people discussing the issues raised in my film, not some inside Hollywood fracas surrounding who is going to ship the prints to the theaters. Plus, I think it is fairly safe to say that Fahrenheit 9/11 has a good chance of doing just fine, considering that my last movie set a box office record and the subject matter (Bush, the War on Terror, the War in Iraq) is at the forefront of most people's minds.

So what will happen to my movie? I still don't know. What I do know is that I will make sure all of you see it by hook or crook. We are Americans. There are a lot of screwed up things about us right now, but one thing that most of us have in common is that we don't like someone telling us we can't see something. We despise censors, and the worst censors are those who would dare to limit thoughts and ideas and silence dissent. THAT is un-American. If I have to travel across the country and show it in city parks (or, as one person offered yesterday, to show it on the side of his house for the neighborhood to see), that is what I will do.

Eerste filmbeelden mishandeling Iraakse gevangenen

CANNES - De omstreden documentaire Fahrenheit 911 toont de eerste filmbeelden van de mishandeling van Iraakse krijgsgevangenen door Amerikaanse soldaten. Dat zei regisseur Michael Moore op het filmfestival van Cannes na de wereldpremière van zijn nieuwe film. In de documentaire zijn onder meer beelden te zien van Amerikaanse soldaten die Irakezen zakken over het hoofd trekken en hoe een oude man met een erectie wordt vernederd.

Moore verwierf de beelden dankzij freelance filmers die de Amerikaanse troepen mochten filmen. "Als je bedenkt hoeveel materiaal ik met mijn gelimiteerde middelen al heb kunnen bemachtigen, vraag je je echt af waarom alle breed verspreide netwerken dit soort beelden nog niet hebben getoond", aldus Moore. "We kennen allemaal de foto's inmiddels, maar dit zijn bij mijn weten de eerste bewegende beelden van dit soort gruwelijke praktijken die naar buiten komen."

Gillende slachtoffers

Ook toont de film beelden van Irakese kinderen die uit elkaar zijn gereten door Amerikaanse bommen, gillende slachtoffers met gapende wonden en volstrekt gedesoriënteerde Amerikaanse soldaten van wie ledematen zijn geamputeerd. Hartverscheurend is een Irakese vrouw die om God roept en hem vraagt de Amerikanen te straffen, terwijl de moeder van een Amerikaanse soldaat huilend in elkaar zakt voor het hek van het Witte Huis. De beelden vormen een bizar contrast met de stoere mariniers die vertellen dat ze tijdens de bombardementen vrolijk "Burn, motherfuckers, burn" zongen. "Want dat is toch wat die 'motherfuckers' moeten doen", zegt een lachende soldaat van een jaar of 18.

Wat Fahrenheit tevens wil aantonen, is de zakelijke verbintenis die al tientallen jaren zou bestaan tussen de families Bush en Bin Laden. Zo laat Moore onder meer zien dat in de dagen na 11 september alle familieleden van Bin Laden ijlings uit de Verenigde Staten werden geëscorteerd. "Stel je eens voor dat Clinton na de aanslagen in Oklahoma de hele familie van Timothy McVeigh op een vliegtuig had gezet om ze buiten schot te houden. Hij was direct ter verantwoording geroepen."

De bewijzen die Moore toont, worden afgewisseld met hilarische beelden van president Bush, die volgens de berekeningen van Moore de maanden voor 11 september 42 procent van zijn tijd op vakantie was. "Ik hoefde eigenlijk niets te doen: Bush heeft voor mij de leukste teksten van de film geschreven", grinnikt de regisseur. "Het zou me niets verbazen als het Witte Huis me van de week belt dat hij voor zijn tekstbijdragen mee zou willen delen in de winst."

Unieke beelden van de president worden getoond als hij tijdens zijn bezoek aan een schoolklasje krijgt te horen dat de WTC-torens branden. Bush onderneemt daarop geen actie, maar pakt een prentenboekje waarin hij 9 minuten lang blijft lezen.

De documentaire leverde al voor zijn wereldpremière een flinke rel op, doordat distributeur Disney de handen ervan aftrok. Volgens Disney omdat de film "geen familievermaak zou leveren", zoals het concern beoogt. Moore betoogt dat Disney bang was belastingvoordeel mis te lopen in Florida, de staat van gouverneur Jeb Bush, broer van president Bush. Moore zoekt nog naar een nieuwe distributeur. "Ik hoop de film deze zomer in Amerika uit te brengen.

Natuurlijk wil ik het liefst dat hij gezien wordt voor de verkiezingen: je brengt ook geen kerstfilm uit in mei. Maar de film blijft actueel: de overkoepelende boodschap van de film blijft ook van toepassing na de komende presidentsverkiezingen."

Moore beweert dat hij met zijn film niet per se de uitslag van de verkiezingen wil beïnvloeden. "Iedereen kent mijn politieke voorkeur: ik hoef niet per se een Democraat in het Witte Huis te hebben. Wat ik wel wil, is dat de stem van het volk wordt gerespecteerd. Bush zit nu in het Witte Huis zonder het fiat van de meerderheid. Ik reken erop dat Amerikanen die Fahrenheit zien goede burgers worden. Wat hun invulling van dat begrip is, laat ik aan henzelf over."

In de eerste plaats heeft Moore een film willen maken waarvoor hijzelf op zaterdagavond de deur uit zou gaan. "Ik wil graag films zien waar ik om kan lachen, waar ik om kan huilen en die me aan het denken zetten. Films waar ik een uur of een dag of een week later nog over wil praten. Dat heb ik volgens mij met deze film wel bereikt."

In Nederland gaat Fahrenheit 911 vermoedelijk in augustus in première.

Hier wil ik even op reageren. Zoals de meesten op dit forum weten, woon ik in Sarasota, en werk ik in de luchtvaart. Op 9/11 was de president in Sarasota, dus ge moogt twee keer raden waar Air Force 1 geparkeerd stond. De opinie van iedereen op de luchthaven was dezelfde: Nog nooit een 747 zo snel weten zijn pre flight inspectie krijgen, en nog nooit zo'n grote organizatie in zo'n mum van tijd weten opbreken en wegwezen.

Verder moet ik nog zeggen dat als ik met een groot probleem geconfronteerd wordt, ik meestal ook even de deur sluit en mijn geest leegmaak om erop te kunnen focussen.

18/05 Michael Moore kanshebber op Gouden Palm

Michael Moores anti-Bush documentaire "Fahrenheit 9/11" heeft tijdens de galavoorstelling maandagavond op het Filmfestival van Cannes, een meer dan 15 minuten lange ovatie gekregen.

De film die VS-president George W. Bush op de korrel neemt, kreeg een staand applaus en bravo-geroep van het gala-publiek. Onder de prominente gasten waren naast Rolling Stones-frontman Mick Jagger ook prinses Caroline van Monaco met haar echtgenoot Ernst-August von Hannover. "Fahrenheit 9/11" loopt in wedstrijd voor de Gouden Palm.

Eerder op de dag vertelde Moore op een persconferentie dat er op zes weken voor de release van de film nog geld voorhanden is om de documentaire nog aan te passen, voor het geval de actualiteit dat zou vereisen. Michael Moore verzekerde de journalisten dat zijn werk, waarin hij de banden tussen de familie Bush en die van Osama bin Laden uitpluist en die vervolgens evolueert tot een sterk anti-oorlogspamflet, zeker voor de Amerikaanse verkiezingen in de VS-bioscopen komt.

Met het filmfestival al over de helft, wordt "Fahrenheit 9/11" als een van de grote kanshebbers op de Gouden Palm gezien. Ook de maandag vertoonde Duitse film "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei", een anders-globalistische prent van Hans Weingartner, oogstte veel bijval en is kandidaat voor een van de prijzen. Op de lijstjes van de favorieten prijken voorts de Zuid-Koreaanse film "Old Boy" van Park Chan-wook, "La Vie est un Miracle" van de Bosniër Emir Kusturica en de komedie "Comme une Image" van de Française Agnès Jaoui. Het verdict valt zaterdag 22 mei.

Het feit alleen al dat zo'n film KAN in de VS moet u toch wel iets zeggen over het democratische gehalte van dat land.

Het feit dat Fahrenheit 9/11 NIET werd uitgebrachtin de States omdat Disney vreesde anders zijn belastingvoordelen in het Bush-iaanse California kwijt te spelen, zegt héél veel over het democratische gehalte van het 'Land of the Free'

Dus de mensen die voor Bush werken en zijn vliegtuig onderhouden en in de lucht krijgen zijn goed in wat ze doen. Het zou me ten zeerste verbazen als Air Force 1 niet in een minimmtijd de lucht in kon, het is het vliegende hoofdkwartier van de machtigste man op aarde...

Maar dat zegt niks over Bush zelf en dat doe ik wel. Bush is een idioot.

Verder moet ik nog zeggen dat als ik met een groot probleem geconfronteerd wordt, ik meestal ook even de deur sluit en mijn geest leegmaak om erop te kunnen focussen.

Natuurlijk, als president van de VS kunt ge u dat inderdaad gerust permitteren. Een nuke ontploft? Wacht ik ga er efkens een nachtje over slapen...

Trouwens, imo, heeft Bush niet veel tijd nodig om zijn "geest leeg te maken"
