Niet verbazingwekkend. Alleen al op die ene foto van het slaapvertrek is te zien dat er een stel gekken aan het werk is geweest. In paniek geraakte gekken.
De rest van de foto's zal nog wel een paar tandjes erger zijn en ook al is Amerika krankjorem, dan hoeft de hele wereld dat toch niet te weten, aldus Obama.

Maar ze komen hier als de grote verliezer uit tevoorschijn. Een land zonder recht, geloofwaardigheid en moraliteitszin.

The covert operation that killed Osama bin Laden produced new evidence that the “emir” of al Qaeda actively commanded the terror group’s affiliates in Yemen, Somalia and other parts of North Africa and was not just an inspirational leader.

Materials found in bin Laden’s compound include hard drives, thumb drives and a dedicated fiber-optic cable used for point-to-point access to the Internet, according to two U.S. officials who read initial after-action reports on the raid.

The commandos who carried out the raid also found equipment for use with a multimedia studio where the al Qaeda leader likely recorded some of the audio and video messages he periodically made public over the past nine years as well as compact discs and paper documents, according to these officials.

The officials said investigators already uncovered new leads on the location of other senior al Qaeda leaders, including Ayman al-Zawahri, the Egyptian-born deputy to bin Laden who is the likely successor over al Qaeda.

The CIA has not begun a formal exploitation of the documents and other material found in the raid, but more details are emerging on one of the most successful counterterrorism operations in U.S. history.

One U.S. intelligence official who asked not to be named said “a peripheral scan of the data suggests that he provided strategic guidance and direction to al Qaeda’s affiliates. We knew he had contact with the affiliates through couriers, but the evidence we have now is that he delivered the strategic direction to many of these groups.”

U.S. intelligence analysts for at least two years have said bin Laden exercised strategic control over al Qaeda and its affiliates. As with most intelligence work, however, there were uncertainties.

The idea that bin Laden was a central figure in the command structure of the several al Qaeda affiliates remains controversial among specialists on al Qaeda.

Marc Sageman, a leading counterterrorism academic and former CIA analyst, has written that al Qaeda functions as a leaderless terrorist group and that bin Laden was mainly an inspirational leader of the group.

Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said Wednesday that the Obama administration should not release the gruesome post-mortem images, saying it could complicate the job for American troops overseas. Rogers told CBS News he has seen a post-mortem photo.

"The risks of release outweigh the benefits," Rogers said. "Conspiracy theorists around the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East."

"Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaeda killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet," Rogers continued. "Osama bin Laden is not a trophy - he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight until Al Qaida has been eliminated."

Let me just say this about the death of Osama bin Laden. Hurray! Thank you to those who risked much to see justice done.

Now, attention all people with tin hats or beanies with little propellers. Yes, I am speaking to you -- moon barkers, conspiracy theorists, birthers, truthers or just plain nutters. Just cut it out. We are tired of your ridiculous antics. Don't even go there.

Unfortunately, some of you have already gone there, haven't you?

My colleague Tony Norman's column about bin Laden's death appeared Tuesday. He promptly received three emails denying the reports. Two said bin Laden wasn't dead, one said he had been dead for a long time. Apparently the conspiracy theory is evolving, but they will get their story straight just as soon as they bend it.

Meanwhile, over at the website of syndicated radio host Alex Jones -- styled infowars.com "because there is a war on for your mind"-- a great froth of conspiracy was brewing. Sample headline: "Obama Shamefully Exploits Bin Laden Fairytale In Transparent PR Stunt." People who have lost their minds in the info war will believe this.

It is enough to make us miss the days when lunatics stayed on the fringe; today, sadly, they occupy large reaches of political opinion. They have become almost respectable.

At least the old-fashioned lunatics came by their addled state honestly, through no fault of their own. The current crop don't have the same excuse. They should know better but willfully refuse to believe anything comporting to common sense. They just want to wish reality away.

To tell the truth, delusional impulses are invited by a history of official lying. Governments have lied through their teeth, lied through their spokesmen, lied through their news releases. A healthy skepticism toward all official pronouncements is thus recommended.

But total disbelief of democratic governments is equally unhealthy and not recommended. Shocking as it may seem, politicians and governments also tell the truth on occasion.

Our leaders are not from another planet -- it's just that looks can be deceiving. They share the same human traits we all do and all of us bend the truth to suit our purposes -- well, not me and you exactly, but the rest of humankind. The most upright man will be left horizontal if he answers in the affirmative when his wife asks "Do I look fat in this?"

"The Invention of Lying," a funny movie starring British comedian Ricky Gervais, made the point that a society of absolute truthsayers would be a wretchedly cruel place. I am not defending lying, just recognizing human nature. We lie to put the best face on things.

Governments do too. What a surprise! Much of the time officialdom doesn't lie through its teeth as much as hum off-key through its dentures.

Consider recent cases that encouraged disbelief in government: Jessica Lynch may not have been Rambo woman before being taken prisoner by the Iraqis, but she was severely injured and was a hero for having served.

Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire, not the hostile fire in the initial Pentagon story, but he did leave his professional football career after 9/11 and he did die for his country -- which makes him a hero in my book. In both cases, after the truth was scrubbed clean of the hyperbole, it revealed ... a fine enough truth.

But the moon barkers throw out all logic to insist that everything government leaders say is a lie. They mumble darkly that military officials couldn't produce a body and so pretended they threw it into the sea. The body in the sea has become President Obama's birth certificate, and that furor was an affront to logic enough.

The trouble with America today is that apparently there are not enough BS meters to go around. (As you know, BS is the shortened version of balderdash.)

Here's my problem with conspiracy theories: They require two things to work 1) high intelligence 2) absolute secrecy. These are the same two attributes most lacking in American life. In our society, lots of dumb people are constantly shooting off their mouths in revealing ways.

Sorry, tin hat wearers, 9/11 wasn't an inside job, Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and Osama bin Laden was killed by our brave forces in Pakistan. Little Nellie and Her Dog know this even if you don't.

It is pathetic that we have to be so skeptical of the skeptics, but they can't be allowed to finish bin Laden's work by drowning the nation in their cynicism, taking "United We Stand" and making it "Disunited We Fall."
