Keminmaa used to be THE Kemi, but with the rising of the land due to the still ongoing relaxation of the ground after the ice-age, the harbour of Keminmaa started to become dificult to maintain. Therefore the todays kemi was founded at the 'new' shoreline. Keminmaa stayed small and is nowadays a small suburb of Kemi. Main attraction here is the old church of St. Michael built in 1551 to 1553. It is the most northern medieval stone church in Finland. In it you can have a look at the mumified body of priest Nikolaus Rungius who died in 1629 (no photos allowed). Also the paintings on the ceiling are really interesting. The church is totally different to all which I have seen and visited here in Finland before.
