Brisbane, Australia, 1890 :

The Brisbane Customs House was erected at the northern end of the Town Reach of the Brisbane River, near Petrie's Bight, between 1886 and 1889 to a design prepared by Charles McLay of the Queensland Colonial Architect's Office.[2]

The 1880s building replaced an earlier and much smaller customs house on the site.

In 1884 the Queensland Government decided to construct a new customs house. In March 1886 a design by Charles McLay was selected from many proposals in the Colonial Architect's Office for a new Brisbane Customs House.

The contract was let to one of Brisbane's oldest and most respected contractors, John Petrie & Son

Fresno National Bank Building

Located at the SE corner of Mariposa and I (later, Broadway) streets. Constructed in 1889 in Gothic-Romanesque style to house the bank, which was founded in 1882.

Uiteraard. Want een bank moet er zo uit zien in 1889... En 30 jaar later is het niet goed genoeg meer.

The bank building was demolished ca. 1920 and replaced by an automobile service station.

De architectuur van de oude wereld was dan ook iets wat we vandaag niet meer (kunnen) bouwen.

Dit is het Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American, Leidseplein, Amsterdam.

Links het gebouw van Politie en Brandweer van stadsarchitect W. Springer, rechts het American Hotel van architecten Ed. Cuypers en C.C.A. Steinigeweg.

Dit eerste American Hotel kwam in 1882 gereed

Het werd twintig jaar later afgebroken om in 1902 plaats te maken voor een nieuw hotel in jugendstil (art nouveau), ontworpen door de architecten Willem Kromhout en H.G. Jansen.

The Hard Rock Hotel Amsterdam American, also known for its Café Américain, on Leidseplein in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is a hotel and café restaurant with a Jugendstil reading room.

It was built in 1898–1900 by W.Kromhout and H.G. Jansen in the Berlage style.

Anyway, het staat er nog steeds, met opnieuw diezelfde zware funderingsstenen en kolonnen, nog niet helemaal uitgegraven met ramen op straatniveau. Die koepel is wel verwijderd.

Gewoon gebouwd op een jaar, Sao Paulo, BR. Ook daar reden de ezels sneller, waren de hamers beter en werkte men harder. Geen weg ernaar toe, gewoon modder.

In 1884, Italian architect Tommaso Gaudenzio Bezzi was chosen to design a monumental building to be built at the place where Brazilian Independence would have been proclaimed. The 123 metres (404 ft) long palace was inspired by a Renaissance palace and is considered an example of Eclectic architecture. The museum was opened to the public on September 7, 1895

Op het dak van het historische Somerset House, een kunstcentrum in het hart van Londen, is zaterdagochtend brand uitgebroken.

De bouw van Somerset House begon in de zestiende eeuw...

Over de oorzaak van de brand is nog niets bekend.

En net zoals in Rouen, zal er ook niets bekend worden.

Scottish Rite Cathedral, Indianapolis

The Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis, Indiana is a historic building designed by architect George F. Schreiber and located in downtown Indianapolis. It is owned by the Valley of Indianapolis Scottish Rite, an affiliated body of Freemasonry. It was built between 1927 and 1929.

t has been described as one of the finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in the United States.

Een exploratie van "Les Beaux Arts", heel interessante video met ongelooflijke beelden ivm de architectuur van de oa de 19e eeuw. Wat dit zo interessant maakt is dat Lucius vergezeld wordt door een professionele houtbewerker, en we dus ook veel beelden te zien krijgen van hoe die gebouwen ervan binnen uitzien en met welk ongelooflijk detail ze zijn gebouwd en soms ook zijn gegregadeerd door "renovaties".

The Alberta Legislature Building was built between 1907 and 1913 in the Beaux Arts style at the same time as the much larger Saskatchewan and Manitoba legislative buildings

The use of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architectural influences was considered appropriate for a public building, as they suggested power, permanence, and tradition. Beaux-Arts buildings are characterized by a large central dome above a spacious rotunda, a symmetrical T-shaped plan, doors and windows decorated with arches or lintels, and a portico supported by massive columns.

The interior fittings include imported marble, mahogany, oak, and brass.

Melbourne began as a collection of tents and huts on the banks of the Yarra River.

Until the building boom which followed the gold rushes, most of Melbourne was built of timber, and almost nothing from this period survives. Two exceptions are St James Old Cathedral (1839) in Collins Street (now relocated to King Street opposite the Flagstaff Gardens), and St Francis Catholic Church (1841) in Elizabeth Street.

St. Francis Catholic Church :

Soon after Melbourne’s pioneer priest, the Franciscan Fr Patrick Geoghegan, arrived in 1839, a temporary chapel made of second-hand floorboards was erected on the site of the future St Francis’ Church. When sufficient funds were raised to finance a permanent building, Geoghegan commissioned the architect Samuel Jackson to design the present church, which he dedicated to St Francis’ of Assisi.

The foundation stone of St Francis’ Church was laid on 4 October 1841. The first mass was celebrated in the completed nave of the church on 22 May 1842. And the church was blessed and opened on 23 October 1845.

The church was designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved in 1740 and was along with the rest of Frederiksstaden, a district of Copenhagen, intended to commemorate the 300 years jubilee of the first coronation of a member of the House of Oldenburg.[1]

Frederick's Church has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31 m. The dome rests on 12 columns.[1] The inspiration was probably St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

The foundation stone was set by king Frederick V on October 31, 1749, but the construction was slowed by budget cuts and the death of Eigtved in 1754. In 1770, the original plans for the church were abandoned by Johann Friedrich Struensee. The church was left incomplete and, in spite of several initiatives to complete it, stood as a ruin for nearly 150 years.

In 1874, Andreas Frederik Krieger, Denmark's Finance Minister at the time, sold the ruins of the uncompleted church and the church square to Carl Frederik Tietgen for 100,000 Rigsdaler — none of which was to be paid in cash — on the condition that Tietgen would build a church in a style similar to the original plans and donate it to the state when complete, while in turn he acquired the rights to subdivide neighboring plots for development.[2]

The deal was at the time highly controversial. On 25 January 1877, a case was brought by the Folketing at the Court of Impeachment (Danish: Rigsretten), Krieger being charged with corruption over this deal. He was, however, eventually acquitted.

Tietgen got Ferdinand Meldahl to design the church in its final form and financed its construction. Due to financial restrictions, the original plans for the church to be built almost entirely from marble were discarded, and instead Meldahl opted for construction to be done with limestone. The church was finally opened to the public on August 19, 1894.

Melbourne University,1860

Archibald Michie remembered the Melbourne of 1852 as little more than 'a very inferior English town'. Only eight years later, he was astounded by Melbourne's transformation into 'a great city, as comfortable, as elegant, as luxurious as any place'. The gold rush saw Melbourne transform from a muddy frontier town to a solid city of spires and domes.

Dresden, Kaiserpalast, Duitsland :



Look at that!

The Kaiserpalast was a five-storey neo-Baroque building in Dresden, which stood on the north side of the Pirnaischer Platz between Moritzring and Amalienstraße. It was built between 1895 and 1897.

The Kaiserpalast was supposed to replace the restaurant and café Pirnaischer Platz of the operator Otto Scharfe after the development of the surrounding area made this establishment unattractive.

The new building was financed by the pharmacist Hermann Ilgen. He bought the property on which the future building was to stand and in 1894 put out an architectural competition

During the air raids on Dresden in February 1945, the Kaiserpalast was badly hit and burned down. In the course of clearing large areas in 1951, the ruins were torn down.
