Slechte zanger.

Vroeger had elk zijn specialiteit in het proces van muziekcreatie. Wanneer is eigenlijk het idee ontstaan dat wie de goede muziek kan schrijven ook best de teksten maakt, en vooral dan de muziek zelf moet uitvoeren of zingen? IJdelheid, veronderstel ik.

Dylan's muziek is bijna steeds beter in de versie van anderen (Bo Jangles - Neil Diamond, Along the watchtower - Jimmy Hendrickx, It's all over now, Baby Blue - Richie Havens - Mr. Tambourine Man - the Byrds, etc, etc°.

Dylan is overigens niet de enige die volstrekt geen zangstem heeft. De overgrote meerderheid in het hedendaags pop-wereldje heeft dat evenmin. Schreeuwerigheid en valse noten zijn troef. En om er eentje van bij ons (tja, kom ...) uit te pikken: Arno. Met de beste wil van de wereld kun je zelfs niet beweren dat zijn zuiplapgebral het zingen ook maar benadert.

Het stemgeluid van Arno werkt me soms ook danig op de zenuwen. Vroeger was hij toch aanzienlijk beter, maar nu...

En dat kwam niet alleen door de uitstekende Rode Libanon die daar gerookt werd.

And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head
Cop said "Wait a minute boys this one's not dead"
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
It's my work he'd say and I do it for pay

Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus he never had a chance
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger
And though they could not produce the gun
The DA said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried
The crime was murder 'one' guess who testified
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers they all went along for the ride
How can the life of such a man

To see him obviously framed
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game.

"All Along the Watchtower" lijkt imo de enige Dylan-song, waarvan de cover (Hendrix) beter klinkt dan het origineel.
Al hebben de Byrds ook wel enkele knappe covers gemaakt.
