Dat Steve Forbes, een apostel van het kapitalisme, lid is van een anti-cuba groep is natuurlijk een detail. Dat Steve Forbes een stevig verdediger is van de belastingsverlagingen voor rijken is ook slechts toeval.

On the other hand, Fortune Magazine (which sells 3,200 pages a year and is "very profitable") charged in a 1996 article that Forbes got those ads with a policy of not printing bad news about companies that advertise. They document several stories that Forbes or his publisher rewrote or killed to avoid offending big advertisers. That doesn't bode well for his independence from the influence of big money interests.

Forbes also fired his secretary of 13 years, Ann Barton, just before her 65th birthday, and has written editorials in favor of allowing forced retirement at that age. When she sued him for age discrimination, he responded viciously, giving a long deposition attacking her competence and attitude, even though she had been his personal secretary for 13 years. When the judge ruled against Forbes in a preliminary hearing, he settled out of court. This isn't a big scandal, as some of the press implies, but it shows a heavy hand in managing people.

Hiding His Tax Returns

Unlike other 1996 candidates, Forbes refused to release his tax returns. (Clinton and Dole released decades of tax returns.) While we can sympathize -- who wants reporters critiquing your tax deductions? Remember Clinton's donated underwear? -- released returns and required financial reports have in fact revealed a number of the best known financial scandals out there. Without them, we wouldn't know about Hillary's $100,000 commodities gain, Lamar Alexander's many financial fast deals, or how much Elizabeth Dole earned speaking to companies that lobbied her husband. If Steve Forbes wants to play in the political world, he should play by the same rules.

Out on the fringes, Steve Forbes is considered part of the effort to coverup to "murder" of Vince Foster. It's kind of hard to explain, as it's a classic conspiracy tale linking Foster, the Israeli spies, Swiss Bank Accounts, the Inslaw company, and of course the CIA. The short story is summarized in a Fortune magazine article: an investigative reporter for Forbes wanted to publish the full tale in Steve's magazine, but was turned down and forced to resign. Why? Probably because the writer went off the conspiracy deep-end. But his supporters will tell you it's because the story listed Caspar Weinberg, Chairman of Forbes and one of Steve Forbes' friends, as one of several Republicans who keep chunks of money in Swiss Bank Accounts -- just like Vincent Foster allegedly did. With Forbes about to run for President, the theory goes, this was too hot to publish in his own magazine. If you like this kind of stuff, you can read the actual article, which was published in the August 1995 issue of Media Bypass, a small conspiracy zine.

Dat schrijft Forbes dus zélf. Zij zeggen 'we assume' en 'we have heared rumors'. Het taat letterlijk in hùn tekst. U baseert op dat soort teksten uw wereldvisie. Mij lijkt dat niet erg intelligent.

Het fabeltje van Fidel's fortuin is hier al eerder ontmaskerd maar het zal u (en anderen) er natuurlijk niet van weerhouden om de leugen uitgebreid te recycleren. Wie zei ook al weer [SIZE=-1]"Man braucht eineLüge nur oft genug wiederholen und sie wird zur Wahrheit"? Was het Goebbels?

Wat Forbes volstrekt ongeloofwaardig maakt (bealve hun bronnen en hun analsye) is als je bekijkt wat ze Castro de vorige jaren toedichtten:

Het VB noemt dat 'verfijnen' maar het is al duidelijk dat niemand zijn fortuin aan die snelhied zou kunnen vermenigvuldigen. Volgens de logica van Forbes zou Castro één van de strafste kapitalisten ter wereld zijn...

Natuurlijk houdt Forbes zich niet met feiten bezig maar met fantasietjes.

Als je leest waar ze hun onzin vandaan halen en waarop hun "analyse" gebaseerd is: "Travels exclusively in a convoy of black Mercedes-Benzes. Sold state-owned Havana Club rum to French liquor giant Pernod Ricard for $50 million in 1993."
Hij zal inderdaad wel in chique zwarte mercedessen rondrijden, ook al zijn die 20 jaar oud. Maar die zijn natuurlijk niet zijn eigendom. Bush en Verhofstadt rijden ook rond in chique wagens. Ze bezitten die niet.


Pernod heeft inderdaad het recht gekocht om rum te produceren onder de merknaam Havana Club. Maar wat ze daarvoor betaalden, ging recht naar de Cubaanse staatskas en niet naar Castro of een geheime zitserse bankrekening.


Je zou zeggen dat ze wel met wat beters op de proppen zouden kunnen komen bij Forbes, maar dat is dus niet. Het is dit soort argumentatie waarmee Forbes haar "analyse" onderbouwt en dat door de media en het vb wordt herhaald zonder verder kritische analyse.


Ik zou graag weten wie die 'men' is. kan je dat wat onderbouwen met cijfergegevens, bijvoorbeeld van de WHO of UNESCO ofzo? Nee, want die stellen het tegenovergestelde vast. Wie is dus die 'men' die zoiets 'ontdekte'?


Maar misschien een pak beter dan de VB propaganda ons wil laten geloven?

Geld maakt geld beste kaatd moest zijn kaptiaal niet zo enorm gestegen zijn, dan was dat alleen maar het bewijs dat hij het bijzonder slecht belegd had...

US Intelligence Behind Forbes Defamation of Fidel Castro
The defamation of Cuban President Fidel Castro by Forbes Magazine was undoubtedly prompted by the US intelligence services, said the president of the Cuban Central Bank, Francisco Soberon, on Monday.
Soberon made his statement during a special TV program, attended by the Cuban president and other personalities, to unmask a libelous article by the US Forbes Magazine listing Fidel Castro as the seventh richest leader in the world.
Launching sensational headlines in international publications is very important to the US 'empire,' said the Cuban official for their objective is hidden in the deep conviction that in their capitalist society, the media can launch a lie without caring about its veracity.
Soberon severely criticized the article in the Forbes publication, named after its owner, a rich US businessman very interested in sniffing around foreign fortunes, but who does not explain the origins of his own, amounting to $1.8 billion dollars.
The Cuban official also criticized Forbes' method of calculating the alleged personal fortune of Fidel Castro, based on an "assumed"
percentage of the island's Gross Domestic Product, and on the income from Havana's Convention Center and exports of Cuban vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
"We can not forget the dark objectives of the US 'empire' in launching such a hideous infamy," said Soberon, adding that according to the Forbes method of calculation based on the GDP, the estimated fortune garnered by George W. Bush could be calculated at 1.2 trillion dollars, or 50 billion dollars annually. This, he said, is equal to the amount produced by money laundering in the United States, from drug trafficking and organized crime, or 28 billion dollars stemming from 10 percent of the total cost of the US war on Iraq.
At the beginning of the TV show, Fidel Castro responded to the defamatory allegations by Forbes magazine and explained that the prime objective of the program was to bring into the open issues relevant to bank accounts abroad, since the Cuban people know their leaders very well.
There have been so many years of lies, defamation and infamy, that we no longer pay attention to it, said Fidel Castro and confirmed that he had all the arguments to tear the Forbes article apart. This is an old debt and it must be addressed, said Fidel referring to the defamation by US magazine, which listed him as one of the world's richest leaders.
Cubans Underscore Fidel Castro's Human Values
Havana, May 15 (ACN) Cuban scientist Concepcion Campa called on the international press to tell the world the truth about Fidel Castro's humanitarian actions.
Campa spoke during a special TV program on Monday attended by the Cuban President to respond to the lies published by the US Forbes business magazine which included Fidel Castro on its list of the ten richest leaders in the world.
"The Forbes' defamation makes us feel sad because they are not capable of understanding that the blood, sweat and tears shed by the Cuban people have earned our greatest wealth: our service to humanity," said Campa who is the director of the Finlay Institute, a prominent vaccine and serum research and production center.
"All of us, Cubans, are multi-millionaires since Fidel has taught us that people are not worth what they own, but what they are and what they are able to do," said the Cuban scientist.
Campa, who is a member of Cuba's Communist Party Political Bureau recalled her personal experience of having shared her dreams with the leader of the Cuban Revolution.
She mentioned how, in 2002, Fidel ordered a donation to Uruguay which included over one million doses of a meningitis B vaccine created by Cuban scientists, in order to counter an epidemic in that Latin American nation. This was despite the fact that the Uruguayan government was sponsoring a resolution against Cuba at the UN Human Rights Commission at that time.
She recalled that when the Cuban ambassador to Uruguay left his office in Montevideo and headed for the airport, a crowd joined him carrying banners reading, 'Thank you Fidel.'
Meanwhile, Havana's Historian, Eusebio Leal, said that austerity and unselfishness have always been permanent characteristics of Cuban President Fidel Castro.
Leal recalled how at the beginning of the revolutionary struggle, Fidel Castro even pawned his personal belongings to collect funds for the revolution and made all kinds of sacrifices without asking anybody for anything.
Leal said he had witnessed the actions of Fidel aimed at preserving national heritage and mentioned some 11,867 extremely valuable gifts sent to the Cuban leader from 133 countries, all of which Fidel Castro had donated to Cuban museums.
Fidel Castro: Forbes Slander is Nothing New
The slanderous defamation by the US Forbes magazine is nothing new, said Cuban President Fidel Castro and recalled that since the late 1990's, the libellous publication began to list him among the world's richest leaders.
In a special TV appearance on Monday to respond to the Forbes article, Fidel Castro recalled the difficulties faced by the island during the economic crisis that hit the island in the 1990's and how the enemies of the Cuban Revolution spread lies and provocations that were never able to discourage the Cuban people or weaken their fighting spirit.
At that time, the country was immersed in its own defense and struggling for survival and the Forbes publication came out with the same lie, which was not paid attention to, said Fidel Castro. He went on to read wires published in 1998 by the US UPI news agency referring to the Forbes list which said that Fidel Castro had amassed a fortune of 1,4 billion dollars.
The Cuban representatives had denied and rejected the defamation by the US publication and pointed out the ignorance of the Forbes writer and the editor about Cuban reality.
Fidel Castro referred to the repercussions of the recent Forbes article in various media outlets; he read out different headlines calling him the 'Seventh Richest Ruler in the World' and 'Fidel Castro is Richer than Queen Elizabeth', among others.
He said he would respond to Forbes not with fury, but with firmness and noted that the libellous publication, owned by the US extreme right, is just looking for notoriety with such infamies.
Also participating in the special program were the president of the Cuban Central Bank, Francisco Soberon, Culture Miniter Abel Prieto, outstanding Cuban scientists Concepción Campa and Agustin Lage, and Historian Eusebio Leal, who all denounced the defamation made by Forbes Magazine against the leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Steve Forbes, the owner of the US magazine that defamed President Fidel Castro, is a media baron linked to the fascist group governing the US and to the CIA, said Cuban Culture Minister Abel Prieto, on Monday.
Abel Prieto, a member of the Cuban Communist Party Political Bureau, made his statements during a special TV program with Cuban President Fidel Castro and aimed at exposing the lies of Forbes Magazine in a recent article which listed the Cuban leader as one of the world's richest leaders.
Steve Forbes is one of those who manipulate public opinion; he not only has money, but right-wing ideas and is a follower of fascist and neo-con traditions, which find their highest expression in George W. Bush and his cabinet, said the Cuban Culture Minister.
Prieto said that he had looked for information published on Internet and found hundreds of examples of lies that have been used for political purposes in order to stigmatize an adversary or clean up the image of US atrocities.
The president of the Cuban Central Bank, Francisco Soberon, was also on the TV program at the request of Fidel Castro and made statements on the vague and ridiculous defamatory article published by Forbes magazine against the Cuban Revolution leader.
Forbes' Libel, an Insult to the Cuban People
A recent article published by Forbes Magazine alleging President Fidel Castro to be one of the richest world leaders is an insult to the people, said Cuban scientist Agustin Lage.
The director of the island's Molecular Immunology Center said that the people of Cuba remember very well those who really enriched themselves at the public's expense prior to the 1959 revolution.
At the request of President Castro, the distinguished scientist appeared on Cuban television Monday to expose the defamation campaign carried out by the US magazine.
"We are not defending ourselves, we are accusing those who rob and those who deal in lies," Lage asserted. "We are not here to defend Fidel Castro, since he is defended by his own ethical values, his dedication to work, his life," stressed the Cuban scientist.
"That magazine does not know what it is writing about," said Lage, adding that the resources earned by Cuba from the sale of vaccines and pharmaceutical products do not go to the president -as stated by Forbes- but finance the distribution of medications, improve healthcare and fund scientific research.
Agustin Lage stressed that the use of lies by the American business magazine is a sign of the weakness of the ideological adversaries of the Cuban Revolution. "The campaign against the Cuban president is politically motivated; it shows that the enemies of the Revolution are losing the ideological battle," he said.
