Storage?

Kennelijk uit 1834...

Zou er heden nog staan als Kesler Law Building, Terra Haute Indiana.

Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne, Australia.

Citaat:
The foundation stone was laid by Victorian governor George Bowen on 19 February 1879[9] and it was completed in just 18 months, opening on October 1, 1880, as the Melbourne International Exhibition. The building consisted of a Great Hall of over 12,000 square metres, flanking lower annexes to the north on the east and west sides, and many temporary galleries between
Met ongelooflijk orgel binnenin.

Gebouwd in 18 maanden... Hoe?

Uiteraard is er een brand en vernieling...

Citaat:
Throughout the 20th century smaller sections and wings of the building were subject to demolition and fire; however, the main building, known as the Great Hall, survived.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Reed_(architect)

Bijvoorbeeld :

Citaat:
Barry Hall, along Little Lonsdale Street, was built in 1886. This now houses the Wheeler Centre. In 1887, the Buvelot Gallery opened for the NGV, (the gallery was later known as Swinburne Hall).
Anyways :

Citaat:
In 1909, most of the remaining Intercolonial Exhibition buildings were closed and the Great Hall was demolished.
Vlak voor de afbraak van "the Great Hall" ( en kijk ook goed naar Victoria in de achtergrond) :

Manitowoc County Courthouse, Wisconsin

Gebouwd op 2 jaar...

Citaat:
The current building is the third courthouse to serve Manitowoc County. The first courthouse was a wooden structure built in Manitowoc Rapids, Wisconsin in 1839. It burnt down in 1852.
Citaat:
The second courthouse was a brick structure constructed in 1857 on the same site as the present courthouse.
Citaat:
In 1905, the county decided to replace this courthouse to gain more space. The second courthouse was moved a block to the south.
Citaat:
The present courthouse was built in 1905–1907. German-born architect Christ H. Tegen of Manitowoc designed the structure, and the county contracted with George Rickman & Sons (MASONS?)

Citaat:
The dome of the courthouse was originally copper and glass, and was nearly identical to the domes of the Oneida County Courthouse and Grant County Courthouse.[6] When a severe storm in May 1950 damaged the glass, the dome was rebuilt with stainless steel.

https://www.archinform.net/arch/122404.htm

Benton County Courthouse, Iowa :

Citaat:
Benton County's first courthouse was a log structure, but it did not have a roof or floor when they started to use it. The court met in a log home during inclement weather.[2] Because of a dispute over the location of the county seat, the second courthouse stood unfinished until 1852 when the main floor of the frame structure was finished to provide space for a courtroom. County officers occupied two rooms in the unfinished second floor before the building was destroyed by fire the following year.

The county records were rescued by three men, one of whom died as a result of his injuries in the fire.[3] The county's third courthouse was built at a cost of $13,000 and dedicated in December 1856. The two-story Federal-style brick building was capped with an octagon-shaped cupola. The second and third courthouses occupied the same location as the present - DUS DIT IS HET VIERDE - courthouse. The cornerstone for it was laid on October 14, 1905, and it was completed in 1906 for $105,000.

Dresden, Centraal Theater, Duitsland.

Citaat:

https://www.chicagomag.com/city-life...o-fire-photos/

Zoals dit gebouw, The Field & Leiter Store.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Field%27s

Volgens wikipedia :

Citaat:
In 1868, Palmer convinced Field and Leiter to lease a new, six-story edifice[5] he had just build at the northeast corner of State and Washington Streets. The store was soon referred to as the "Marble Palace" owing to its costly marble stone face.
Details vind je hier :

https://chicagology.com/prefire/prefire070/

Citaat:
The fronts are decorated with six marble balconies, each one twenty-six feet in length, and with eight eighteen feet long, supported on decorated console with marble balustrades of a very elaborate pattern. The building is surmounted with a noble Mansard roof, seventeen feet high, and which combines with modern convenience many of the decorative attractions of ancient detail.
Dit gebouw beschikte over "steam-powered elevators"...

Uit wikipedia :

Citaat:
Horace B. Parker, a young salesman, rushed to the store's basement, broke up boxes, and built a fire in the furnace boiler so that the steam-powered elevators could be operated.

Citaat:
Two years later, in October 1873, Field and Leiter returned to State Street at Washington, opening in a new five-story store at their old location they now leased from the Singer Sewing Machine Company,

Citaat:
This store was expanded in 1876, only to be destroyed by fire again in November 1877.

Citaat:
Ever tenacious, Field and Leiter had a new temporary store opened by the end of the month at a lakefront exposition hall they leased temporarily from the city, located at what is now the site of the present Art Institute of Chicago. Meanwhile, the Singer company had speculatively built a new, even larger, six-story building on the ruins of their old 1873 store, which, after some contention, was personally bought by Field and Leiter. Field, Leiter & Company now reclaimed their traditional location at the northeast corner of State and Washington for the last time in April 1879.
Dit gebouw, 6 jaar later, no problemo, geen powertools, lets go Donkeys Inc! :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Field%27s

Oww,

Citaat:
In 1892, the structures between the 1879 building on State Street and Wabash Avenue to the east were demolished and the famous influential architect Daniel H. Burnham and his firm D.H. Burnham & Company was commissioned to erect a new building in anticipation of the influx of visitors from the World's Columbian Exposition scheduled for 1893. The nine-story "Annex" at the northwest corner of Wabash and Washington Streets has opened under the direction of Burnham associate Charles B. Atwood[8] in August 1893, towards the end of the Exposition. In 1897, the old 1879 store was rebuilt and had two additional floors added, while the first of Marshall Field's iconic landmark Great Clocks was installed at the corner of State and Washington Streets on November 26.[9]

New Orleans Cotton Exchange :

Wat een gebouw...

Citaat:
The New Orleans Cotton Exchange was established in 1871 by a group of cotton factors, at a time
when one third of the production of cotton in the U.S. was shipped through New Orleans. It was
done in answer to the opening of the New York Cotton Exchange in 1870, New Orleans merchants
being concerned that the New York Exchange would be more beneficial to buyers than sellers.

It began in rented offices (eerste gebouw!) at the corner of Gravier and Carondelet Streets. The Exchange soon
constructed its own building (tweede gebouw!) nearby, but quickly outgrew it. In 1883, on another corner of Gravier
and Carondelet, the Cotton Exchange built a much larger and more extravagant building (derde gebouw, in de foto!) that
would become known for its grand exterior and opulent interior; also, for its abundant scuptural
embellishments, especially, the group of allegorical figures crowning the entrance (Agriculture,
Commerce and Industry - though New Orleanians, for reasons lost to the ages,
more often referred to Commerce as Peace). These somewhat controversial sculptures
were the work of A. Goddard, a Chicago-based sculptor.

In 1921, the landmark structure was demolished and a new, less palatial and more
modern building took its place.

Michigan Central Station, Detroit :

Citaat:
Michigan Central Station (also known as Michigan Central Depot or MCS) is the historic former main intercity passenger rail station in Detroit, Michigan. Built for the Michigan Central Railroad, it replaced the original depot in downtown Detroit, which was shuttered after a major fire on December 26, 1913, forcing the still unfinished station into early service. Formally dedicated on January 4, 1914, the station remained open for business until the cessation of Amtrak service on January 6, 1988. The station building consists of a train depot and an office tower with thirteen stories, two mezzanine levels, and a roof height of 230 feet (70 m). The Beaux-Arts style architecture was designed by architects who had previously worked together on Grand Central Terminal in New York,[1] and it was the tallest rail station in the world at the time of its construction.

Sakakini Palace, Cairo, Egypt

Citaat:
For five continuous years, specifically between 1892 and 1897, the Sakakini Palace was built by Habib Pasha Al-Sakakini, a Syrian origin who came to Cairo at the age of seventeen, worked for the Suez Canal Company, and showed excellence and craftsmanship in his field.
Citaat:
The palace was built on a pond that was called the "Kamzihi Al-Zaher" and was built in the Italian style on an area of 2,698 square meters, with a height of 5 floors, and contains 50 rooms, 400 windows and doors, and 300 statues

Beach Hotel, Galveston, Texas : (populatie 1880 : 20k)

Citaat:
The Beach Hotel was a seasonal resort in Galveston, Texas. Designed by architect Nicholas J. Clayton, it was built in 1882 at a price of US$260,000 (US$8.21 million in today's terms) to cater to vacationers. Owned by William H. Sinclair, the hotel opened on July 4, 1883, and was destroyed by a mysterious fire in 1898.
Citaat:
The hotel was destroyed by fire lasting 25 minutes in 1898. The fire trucks had a problem reaching the hotel because of the beach's sand. The cause of the fire was never determined.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_J._Clayton

Citaat:
Clayton was born on November 1, 1839, in Cloyne, County Cork, Ireland. His father, also named Nicholas Joseph Clayton, died in 1848.
Citaat:
Clayton constructed many grand religious and public buildings in Galveston including the First Presbyterian Church (Galveston, Texas). He is also credited as the architect of Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Tampa, Florida) and of the Main Building of St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. He also designed an addition to St. Mary Cathedral in Galveston.
Main building St; Edward's University :

Citaat:
St. Edward's University was founded in 1877 by Edward Sorin, a Roman Catholic priest who also founded the University of Notre Dame.
Citaat:
Clayton produced a large Gothic Revival design, four stories high with tall Gothic windows; this first Main Building was begun in 1887 and completed in 1888. On April 9, 1903, the first building was destroyed in a fire
Dit was het eerste gebouw :

Gebouwd op een jaar, in Galveston Texas, no worries!

Gelukkig zeer snel in hetzelfde jaar heropgebouwd!

Citaat:
The university then commissioned Clayton, the original architect, to design a replacement for the structure, on essentially the same plan, upgraded to include modern fireproofing features. Main Building was rebuilt over the spring and summer, ready for use by the beginning of the fall 1903 semester.
Harmony Hall Masonic Temple :

Citaat:
This Masonic Temple was situated at the southeast corner of 21st and Post Office Streets. Its cornerstone was laid in 1882 and completed in 1884.

The leading features of the architecture style were its plaster buttresses and Gothic detail engrafted on classic forms of the Italian renaissance, with the distinctive details of each style modified in a harmonious manner to blend the pleasing features of each. A preponderance of Gothic outlines was maintained in the arched construction, the tracery of the openings, and other salient features of this distinctively Northern European style.

The buildings corner tower was sheared off during the 1900 Storm, and not replaced. Sadly, the building was later destroyed by fire in 1928.
Citaat:
“Back then, many of the Masons worked downtown and even as the building burned, they were able to save many of the library books and some of the furniture,” said Abbie Hughes, a master Mason and member of the Scottish Rite for 56 years.

“They moved almost everything, even the grandfather clock, from the hall’s first floor to the Kahn & Levy Building directly across the street. Levy, a Mason, stored them until the new building was complete.”

The elaborate Italian marble staircase also was saved, salvaged from the charred remains.
Hmm...

Citaat:
Most Galvestonians are familiar with the 1900 Storm and other devastating hurricanes which have struck the island over the years. Another catastrophic disaster you may not know about is the Great Fire of 1885 which burned hundreds of homes across 40 city blocks, displacing thousands of residents.

Ball High School, Galveston,Texas :

Citaat:
In 1884, Ball High became the 2nd High School in the state of Texas. Ball High School's cornerstone foundation was laid on February 15, 1884

Citaat:
In 1886, the school was named after the primary benefactor, George Ball.
Kennelijk klaar.

Owww...

Citaat:
The new public high school in Galveston opened its doors to 200 pupils on October 1, 1884, with a building consisting of 12 classrooms, two offices and an auditorium
1 jaar??

Wacht...

Citaat:
In the summer of 1883, a local dry goods businessman, George Ball, communicated his intention to support the establishment of a public high school in Galveston via a brief and simple note to the Galveston City Council. It read: "If the authorities of this city will furnish appropriate and sufficient grounds centrally located, I will contribute $50,000 for the erection of a building to be permanently dedicated to the use of the public free schools of the City of Galveston...I will be pleased to carry [this proposal] into the earliest effect with the hope that it may prove useful to the community with which I have been long identified and whose future welfare I most earnestly desire."
Citaat:
Ball's offer was accepted, and the cornerstone for what would become Ball High School in Galveston was laid on February 15, 1884.
Citaat:
The new public high school in Galveston opened its doors to 200 pupils on October 1, 1884
Februari tot oktober... 1884, lets go donkeys and hammers and chissels...

Citaat:
Bill Cherry wrote in a 2004 Galveston County Daily News article that, by the 1950s, Ball High School "was not only horribly congested, but the building was in deplorable condition, the victim of years and years of deferred maintenance."[2]

In 1954, the Ball High School complex moved to its new location, constructed in 1952.
Hoe spijtig...

Citaat:
By the fall of 1901, all classes were again held at the Ball High building.
Citaat:
The original Ball High was sold and demolished shortly after the new school opened.

Not done...

Citaat:
The Gresham mansion was made all of stone, and was sturdy enough to withstand the great hurricane of 1900. The Greshams welcomed hundreds of survivors of the hurricane into their home.[3]

The house was built between 1887 and 1892 by Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton
Uiteraard, die had niets beters te doen...

Wie, hoe, materiaal, logistiek,... niks... nada, gewoon gebouwd, no problem!

Een laatste :

Citaat:
The Ashbel Smith Building, also known as Old Red, is a Romanesque Revival building located in Galveston, Texas.[2] It was built in 1891 with red brick and sandstone. [3] Nicholas J. Clayton was the architect. It was the first University of Texas Medical Branch building.

In 1949, the building named for Ashbel Smith, a Republic of Texas diplomat and one of the founders of the University of Texas System. The building was registered as a Texas Historical Landmark in 1969 and renovated in 1985.

In 2008, Old Red was flooded with six feet of water by Hurricane Ike. It was also one of the few buildings to survive the Galveston Hurricane of 1900.

19e eeuwse Insane Asylums

Citaat:
Just a brief freestyle video covering some of the more interesting ideas and topics regarding insane asylums.

Particularly, their English roots in Bedlam, their varieties throughout the USA built with questionable designs, and the largest building in New Zealand, which in the 1800’s was an asylum that has since been completely erased from history. Just a few photographs and concepts.

Pabst Building, Milwaukee

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pabst_Building

Build : 1890 - 1891

Citaat:
The property at the northwest corner of Water and Wisconsin Street was a prime central location of historic significance. Solomon Juneau's original cabin and trading post had stood at this spot on the Milwaukee River, considered the "starting point" of the city.[2] In 1851 the Ludington Block building was built here. Around 1890 the property was purchased by brewer Frederick Pabst, who demolished the Ludington building and hired architect Solon Spencer Beman to design his headquarters, a magnificent symbol of his brewery empire, in its place.[3][2]

The Pabst Building measured fourteen stories, about 235 feet tall from the sidewalk to the top of the copper tower.[2] It was constructed of brown brick ornamented with terra cotta with a magnificent granite arch at its entrance.[3][2] The main tower was topped with copper, featuring four large clock faces.[2] The style has been described as "a masterpiece of Romanesque Revival"[2] and as a "neo-gothic high-rise, with Flemish detailing."[3] It quickly became an iconic building of Milwaukee and a popular subject for postcards.[2] The Pabst was Milwaukee's first skyscraper, and held the title of tallest building in Milwaukee for four years, until the Milwaukee City Hall was completed.[3]

The Pabst building saw many alterations to its roofline over the years. In the late 1940s the copper towers were removed due to deterioration and the rooflines were squared off.[2] In 1981 it was demolished to make way for 100 East Wisconsin. The crown of the new building was inspired by the Pabst Building's design.

Citaat:

Casino Theatre, New York :

Gewoon gebouwd in 1882...

Citaat:
The Casino Theatre, designed in Moorish Revival style by architects Francis Hatch Kimball and Thomas Wisedell, was the first theatre in New York to be lit entirely by electricity.[3] It was built in 1882 more than 15 blocks north of where the theatre district was then centered, 23rd Street.[2] In 1890, New York's first roof garden was added to the theatre.[4] It originally seated approximately 875 people, however the theatre was enlarged in 1894 and again when it was rebuilt in 1905 after a fire in 1903. The redesigned Casino seated 1,300.
Kijk naar dat plafond...

Citaat:
It closed in 1930 and was demolished the same year.

The Teatro Lirico, Milan

Citaat:
The Teatro Regio Ducale, the court theatre of the Royal Palace of Milan
(het gebouw dat er eerst stond), was destroyed by fire on February 26, 1776.
Citaat:
With the city deprived of its only theatre, Giuseppe Piermarini was commissioned to design and build two new theatres on land surrounding the Palace.
Citaat:
It was inaugurated on August 21, 1779 (dus 2 jaar later) (a little more than year after the opening of La Scala) with an opera buffa and ballet by Salieri.

Citaat:
On the night of 24 January 1695 a fire destroyed the Court Theater. Reconstruction and expansion of a new ducal theater would begin only in 1717
Citaat:
It was completed on 26 December 1717
Ofcourse... in hetzelfde jaar...

Citaat:
In 1723 a new fire accident damaged the ceremonial halls of the palace .
Citaat:
Fire struck again, destroying the Court Theater on February 26, 1776. It was decided at this time that the fire-prone Court Theater was to be built elsewhere
Citaat:
The whole building was heavily damaged on the night of 15 August 1943, when the city was caught in heavy bombing by the Royal Air Force. Even if the bombs only hit a small part of the roof, damage quickly extended across the whole structure because of a colossal fire that was not noted and quenched in time

Volgens wiki :

Citaat:
The theatre was inaugurated on 3 August 1778
Gebouwd op 2 jaar dus, easy in 1776...
