Murphy moved, his right arm stiffened. The muzzle of his gun...

Dolan wanted to scream, in a desperate effort to avoid the killing of these men, these British soldiers who were sure to walk into Murphy’s trap, and die because of it. Although Dolan wasn’t particulary fond of these soldiers, they were enemies after all, he didn’t want them dead, since that would surely end also in the killing of himself. He tried to move towards the giantic madman beside him, but a terrible fear paralysed his limbs. As in slow motion, he saw the heads of the British appear at the top of the staircase. Like a predator, a savage animal, Murphy lay waiting untill both enemies were upstairs. At that moment Dolan’s tension eased somewhat, and with a rasping voice he spoke silently: “Watch out.”
The soldiers hadn’t heard him, but Murphy had. With his mad eyes he stared at Dolan. Screaming, he jumped up, and fired wildly at the surprised soldiers. They tried to shoulder their rifles, but it was in vain. Murphy’s first bullet pierced the neck of one of the men, a young boy with the stripes of a corporal on his arm. Blood spatted across the dusty hall when the second soldier, a somewhat older man with a short beard tried to fire his weapon. The muzzle was aimed directly at Murphy’s head. The large man already closed his eyes, sure of death. By some miracle, however, the rifle of the Brit jammed, and he desperately tried to draw his pistol. But by then, Murphy had recovered, and fired three bullet rapedly into the soldier’s torso.
Then he turned to Dolan, who was cowering in the corner. “You come with me, you piece of shit traitor. The captain will know what to do with a bastard like you.”
The captain was the leader of the uprising in this part of the city. Though mostly under English control after three days of hard battles, there were still some streets and buildings under command of the Irish freedom fighters.
The big man dragged the stunned Dolan to street level, and they left the house through the back door. In the distance shots were still fired, and the stench of petrol bombs, or molotov coctails, was heavy in the air.
Murphy picked up the machine gun of a dead English soldier, and hurried through the streets, dragging Dolan, who was too afraid to utter a word, behind him over the bloody cobblestones.
Ten minutes later, they were close to the Headquarters, where the captain still resided, they fell into an ambush carefully prepared by the British.
“God damn!” Murphy cursed. He dropped Dolan on the ground, and, firing short bursts from his machine gun, he dived behind an abandoned cart.
At this time, Dolan awoke from his state of shock. He realised he was lying in the middle of a street, and bullets rained down beside him. He got to his feet, and jumped trough the doorway of a small house. He breathed heavily,a nd with the back of his gloved hand he wiped the sweat of his brow. Waht had happened? he wondered. The one moment he tried to call out to the English on the staircase, the next he was lying on the cold cobblestones of a street he did not recognise. Only then he realised a bullet had shattered his left kneecap. It was ironic. The standard IRA punishment for traitors, like him, was the shooting of a bullet in the left knee. He smiled sadly. He had betrayed his homeland, the Republic, and all it stood for. He looked around the room he was in, which seemed to have been an rebel base a short while ago. It had probably been an outpost to saveguard the HQ. He dragged himself over to a corner, where some boxes were stacked. He looked inside, and smiled.
Meanwhile Murphy wasn’t doing good. A bullet had already hit him in his left arm, but he ignored the pain and kept shooting. Apparently his foes had enough of the shoot out, so they decided to storm his shelter. Murphy saw them running towards him, and he made his peace whit God, for it was certain that this was the hour of his dead.
At that very moment however, the door of a nearby house burst open, and Dolan jumped out, shooting wildly around him with two machine pistols he found in one of the boxes. He took the Englishmen by surprise, and before they could even fire there weapons, they all fell under the rain of bullets that descended upon them. Dolan collapsed too, his energy was totally drained now. Before he passed out, he felt himself being picked up, and carried through the now deserted street.

He woke up in a bed with rough sheets, apparently made of old potato sacks, sewed together.
“Well, well,” a soft, cultured voice sounded, “It appears our sleeping beauty is awake.”
Dolan looked around him. He saw the smiling face of the captain close to his bed. “What, what happened?” he stuttered.
“Old Murphy told me ya saved ‘is life, ‘e did,” another man spoke with a heavy Irish accent. He was obviously some kind of peasant from outside the city.
“I did?” Dolan asked, “All I remember is jumping out into the street, shooting.”
“That ya did, lad!” the peasant yelled, “And it seems ya got all of the English bugger, too!”
“Imagine that,” Dolan aswered, “But, tell me, where are we?”
“You are in the HQ,” the captain aswered. “And you awoke just in time, too. The English are attacking us even as we speak.”
“But,” Dolan said, “We will all be killed, then!”
“Not all, my boy,” the captain sighed, “Me and the rest of the men that are good to fight, will rush out in ten minutes, and distract the English for as long as we can. Meanwhile, you escape through the back with the rest of our wounded that can still walk. An old army truck is waiting two streets ahead to take you into the hills.”
“I thank you, captain. I hope you will survive all of this carnage.”
They didn’t speak any more after that. Like the captain said, in less than fifteen minutes, he was running towards the green truck, along with a dozen other men, all wounded in some way. When they had all entered, the truck drove away from the carnage, the war, and the bloodshed, leaving behind hundreds of good men who fought and died for freedom.[edit]
