[Was Aristoteles zwart?]

What is the meaning of this Arabic image showing a black skinned Aristotle? Was Aristotle Black? Did he have lots and lots of drops of African blood? Did he have African ancestors? Were they SSA or Caucasian? What might have been his skull index? Would his looks make other Africans consider him one of theirs? Would people come up to him and ask where he was from? Or ask him when the hell he will be going back to Africa? Was dear Aristotle a real person, or a publishing company?

Denk je dat de racisten op dit forum boos worden op deze soort foto's? Een succesvolle, goed uitziende zwarte man met een mooie vrouw die overloopt uit haar jurk. Schijnbaar gelukkige mensen.
Kan je mij uitleggen waar de schoen precies wringt? Kan het zijn dat het om mislukkelingen gaat die jaloers zijn. Of zijn ze getraumatiseerd door de scheiding van hun ouders, hun alcoholische moeder die hen nooit omhelsde en kuste of hun boze stiefvader die hen enculeerde?

Dat socrates bruin of licht bruin was, kan misschien wel zijn gezien de evolutie en de plaats.
Zoals Jesus ook misschien of vrijwel zeker licht bruin was.
Maar rood neen ... kleuters beweren dat.
En ik vind die terminologieen vrij dom want wat is rood, wat is zwart, en wat is bruin.
Alsof dat iedereen de zelfde huid heeft

Neen lieverd, wat ik zeg is dat ik een grote afkeer heb van dat anonieme gedoe, maar er is geen alternatief, helaas. Verder leek het mij leuk als er sprake was van een echte uitwisseling van ideeen.

That’s probably why we live with this idea that there should only be one, amateur portrait of this famous author in existence. My guess is that the black portraits are kept in hiding, or were destroyed.

I do love Pride and Prejudice enormously and like to compare the four TV and cinema versions I know off. The latest with Kiera Knightly, in the role of Elizabeth Bennet, gives a shortened, realistic version, and augments the role of Mrs. Bennet a lot. She does not come off as silly anymore, but purposeful and very successful with three daughter married in a short period of time. The best Mr. Bingley ever! I like the imposing entrance of the nobles at the ball, which gives a better perspective on the boldness of Elizabeth Bennet in trifling with such a powerful and dangerous man as Mr. Darcy.

Miss Knighly never strikes me as an intellectual type, as I saw her horsing around in some action pics. So she does not convince as a scholarly Lizzy. I do not believe she really reads books. In some scenes she is also terribly lacking in beauty. But her Liza is young while all the other Elisabeths Bennets seem old and stately. With all versions there is always some fooling around with the status of the Bennets, like if the women really work in the house or if they order their staff around for every trifle. The viewer would sympathize with them a great deal more if they actually worked around the house. Sometimes the housekeeper Hill is a man, other times he is a women. Sometimes the domestics are privy to all family conversations, other times not.

The movie version shows the more anti-nobility spirit of Austin by forcing the highest noble to marry a mere normal human. They have played the Bennet family up as nobility fans with portraits of Stuart nobles on their walls. So Austin is fully in the post Ancien Regime spirit while she still milks the prince charming fairy tale. Her views are staunchly feminist and I have heard reports that she was a lesbian. She redeems women, but also portrays the sillyness to teach them to behave better. Lady The Bourgh has her odd moments, but says sensible things as well. The movie version is a reason to read the book again as I feel they have added dialogue

Most interesting are the realistic dark, decors, with distressed walls, weathered and lived in. Less conspicuous empire costumes then usual. The clothes don’t call too much attention to themselves, and are sometimes quite dreary. Kiera is defiantly flat chested, so we move into realism where Miss Austin does not write realism. Somehow it’s hard for me to look past her lack of bosoms as it reflects on Mr. Darcy’s taste in women. To speak out plainly; she might have been a boy. Which then puts the focus on the actual kind of relation he has with Bingley and his true motive from separating him from Miss Jane Bennet. And I’m also not fond of the elder ladies wearing ancient regime, eighteen century robes �* l�* Française or �* la Anglaise. Did the British really kept these styles, while even in the eighteen century they were more relaxed then the French.

Perhaps the next version should show the Bennets as blacks?
