Ik bedoel dat het altijd een staat zal zijn van joden, moslims, christenen en andere groepen. En zo hoort het ook. Liefst zijn al die groepen ook democratisch vertegenwoordigd. Dan heb je op termijn geen muren en PLO's meer nodig. De Israëlische vlag is de vlag van het zionisme. Misschien moet het een meer multiculturele vlag worden, die de culturele werkelijkheid van het land beter representeert?

Hoe gaan 2 culturen kunnen samenleving die elk rotsvast geloven in de vernietiging van de andere?

Hoe gaan 2 culturen kunnen samenleving die elk rotsvast geloven in de vernietiging van de andere?

De Arabieren willen meer dan wat ook Israël zien branden en de joden onthoofd.

Dat is een tendentieuze denktrant. Vergeet niet dat joden, christenen en moslims eeuwenlang vredevol hebben samengeleefd in Jeruzalem. Zo waren het ten tijde van de Eerste Kruistocht bijvoorbeeld de kruisvaarders die een bloedbad onder de joden aanrichtten, niet de moslims.
In Spanje leefden tot de Reconquista talrijke "sefardische" joden, die er zelfs de intellectuele en economische elite vormden. De gedwongen bekeringen gingen uit van de nieuwe christelijke heersers, die op die manier het cement van de Spaanse maatschappij verdreven, en Spanje in het verderf stortten via intellectuele terreur en brandstapels.
Dergelijke voorbeelden zijn ook aan te halen voor Noord-Afrika.
Jodendom en Islam zijn dus geen tegengestelden.
Bovendien betwijfel ik of de Arabische staten nog steeds de vernietiging van Israël willen. Een deel van het vredesproces is immers wel geslaagd, en de vrede tussen Israël en Egypte, Jordanië en Syrië is gerealiseerd. Ik dacht dat die landen Israël zelfs erkend hebben. Bovendien heeft Israël zich teruggetrokken uit Zuid-Libanon, wat een belangrijk signaal was naar de Arabische wereld toe.
Wel zijn er extremistische islamitische groepen die het bestaan van Israël als een doorn in het oog ervaren en paramilitair bestrijden. Veel van die groepen worden beschouwd als een onderdeel van het wereldterrorisme, dat zich vooral richt tegen de Western way of life, die ook in Israël een gegeven is. De geloofwaardigheid van en steun aan die groepen is voor een deel afhankelijk van de manier waarop Israël te werk gaat in de bezette gebieden.
Worden die groepen gesteund vanuit de Arabische staten? Mogelijk wel, maar niet veralgemeend.
De retoriek van gematigder groepen wordt vaak ook als "antizionistisch" omschreven. Het is een retoriek die ingegeven is door angst, niet door het potentieel om Israël te vernietigen. Vergeet niet dat veel Arabische regimes Israël nog steeds ervaren als een dreiging. Hopelijk is die vrees onterecht, maar kennelijk is die toch nog niet helemaal weggenomen. De oplossing voor het probleem ligt in elk geval in Palestina.
Indien Israël zijn joods exclusivisme zou opgeven, en zou evolueren tot een staat waar zowel Arabieren als joden dezelfde rechten en garanties op culturele eigenheid hebben, zou het probleem zichzelf oplossen, en zou Israël evolueren tot een baken van democratie en multiculturaliteit, dat een positief licht zou laten schijnen op de omringende Arabische landen.
De evolutie in de Palestijnse gebieden, en de broeiende opstand van onderuit tegen een corrupt Palestijns regime (dat overigens door Israël en de VS werd geïnstalleerd), dat nu een terroristisch regime blijkt te zijn, is een eerste teken van beterschap. Democratie en rechtvaardigheid komt van onderuit.
Ik denk dat Israël deze kans niet mag missen, en die mee moet ondersteunen. In het belang van Israël, maar vooral ook in dat van de Palestijnen zelf.

In die tijd had men ook al touwen hoor. En zo superhoog is die muur niet, dus moeilijk om erover te wippen is het niet.

Probeer jij echter maar eens een roversbuit over diezelfde muur te krijgen met je touwen . Die mongolen kwamen niet afgezakt voor een paar gouden kelkjes hé. Maar o.a. voor de rijstoogst en slaven.

Ik heb toch eens één en ander opgezocht omtrent de Chinese Muur:
- breedte aan de voet: 6 m
- breedte aan de bovenkant: 4,5 m
- hoogte: van 6 tot 8,7 m (probeer daar maar eens over te wippen)
- hoogte van de kantelen: 2 m
- hoogte van de borstwering: 1 m (kantelen en borstwering wijzen op een verdedigende functie)
- totale lengte in vogelvlucht: ca. 2700 km
- totale lengte: ca. 10.000 km
- 20.000 muurtorens
- 10.000 losse wacht - en seintorens (met de bedoeling om via vuursignalen een bericht binnen de 24 u over een afstand van 1064 km te verspreiden)
- meer dan 300.000 bouwers (dwangarbeid) --> boeren, soldaten, gevangenen, ... China "leefde" zijn onderdanen, zoals bekend.
- wachttorens om de 70 m (tja, over elektronische bewaking kon men nog niet beschikken natuurlijk)
- breedte voldoende om 5 paarden naast elkaar te laten lopen (troepenverplaatsingen?); bovendien hellingbanen voor paarden (de muur slingert zich door bergachtig gebied)

Eigenlijk is "De Muur" een amalgaam van verschillende, in diverse tijdsperiodes ontstane muren, alle gericht tegen Mongoolse steppenvolkeren, die op hun snelle paarden geregeld raids uitvoerden in het Noorden van China. De Muur had dus de bedoeling die raids onmogelijk te maken (want met een paard kom je niet over een 6 m hoge muur) en de Mongolen aldus buiten te houden. In tijden van vreedzame coëxistentie werd de muur verwaarloosd, maar herbouwd als de nomadische buurstaten sterk en vijandig waren. De huidige restanten dateren vnl uit de Ming-periode (1368 - 1644 n. Chr.), maar er zijn ook tracés uit de Han- en de Qing-periode bekend.

Zo'n project onderneem je niet om rovers te verhinderen hun buit mee te nemen. Men wou Mongoolse roversbendes buiten houden. En men slaagde daarin. De korte verwijzing naar de Chinese Muur in mijn beginpost was dus wel degelijk correct.

Oh ja, dit is hem dus ... (althans een klein deel ervan): let vooral op de hoogte en de massieve wachttoren. Echt wel een verdedigingsmuur als je het mij vraagt ...

What is the reason for establishing the Security Fence Area?

The Security Fence is being built with the sole purpose of saving the lives of the Israeli citizens who continue to be targeted by the terrorist campaign that began in 2000. The fact that over 800 men, women and children have been killed in horrific suicide bombings and other terror attacks clearly justifies the attempt to place a physical barrier in the path of terrorists. It should be noted that terrorism has been defined throughout the international community as a crime against humanity. As such, the State of Israel not only has the right but also the obligation to do everything in its power to lessen the impact and scope of terrorism on the citizens of Israel.

Will it be possible to cross the Security Fence Area?

Yes- Israel will establish gates to allow free passage across the Area. The Security Fence, whose only function is to provide security, will not seal off the
West Bank.

Special arrangements have been made for Palestinian farmers separated from their lands. Gates along the Security Fence will enable Palestinian farmers and their workers to cross from one side to another. These special gates are for agricultural purposes only; the passage of regular pedestrians and cars will be handled through different gates.

How was the path of the Security Fence determined?

The path of the Security Fence was planned in accordance with security
and humanitarian concerns. It does not annex any lands to Israel nor does it establish any borders , a process that remains a matter for negotiations and should be resolved between the sides. Such was the case in the peace treaty with Jordan in which the border fence was adjusted, by mutual agreement,
by 80 meters.

Why isn't the Security Fence built along the "Green Line"?

The so called "Green Line" has never represented an international boundary. The 1949 armistice agreements specifically refer to this fact. There was never a recognized and legitimate sovereign in the West Bank. The legal status of these areas remains that of disputed territory- to be resolved through negotiations . It is this that is required by Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, which call for the parties to start negotiations , inter alia, on "secure and recognized boundaries", and agreements reached between the parties specifically refer to the need for direct negotiations to resolve this issue.

The Security Fence that is being built is intended to counter terrorism of the most brutal kind, not to dictate a border that is and remains the subject of permanent negotiations. It is our hope that by building this fence its very function will become irrelevant and that one day it will be dismantled.

On the practical level a fence along this line would create far greater humanitarian problems, arbitrary dividing certain villages , and separating others from access to water and other basic services on a large scale. Moreover, it would ignore the aim of the fence , which is to frustrate acts of terrorism directed against Israeli population centers. It is the terrorists who, by their murderous attacks, have dictated the route, which seeks to protect as many civilians as possible, while seeking to minimize the humanitarian and environmental hardship.

Why has the route been changed in several places?

It should be noted that in addition to security considerations Israel has made every attempt to plan the route so as to avoid any undue hardship to the local population. For example, changes were made after Israeli authorities conducted negotiations with landowners in which their particular needs were taken into account. In certain areas archeological sites, such as the ancient city in Shuweika were discovered, and the route was changed to prevent damage to these historical areas. In other locations Palestinians land registration data was either inaccurate or out-of-date. As new houses were discovered in places which had previously been registered as uninhabited ,some of them illegal were buildings, the path of the Security Fence Area had to be modified.

What is the legal status of the land?

The land used in building the Security Fence is seized for military purposes, not confiscated, and it remains the property of the owner. Legal procedures are already in place to allow every owner to file an objection to the seizure of their land. Moreover, property owners are offered compensation for the use of their land and for the damage to their trees.
Israel is making every effort to provide local population and landowners with individual solutions to any difficulties caused by the Security Fence.

What is the status of Palestinians who reside between the Security Fence and the Green Line?

Only a small number of Palestinian villages will be included on the western side of the Security Fence. Their residents will not have to relocate and their legal status will remain unchanged.

What will happen to olive trees and other fruit trees?

Farmers who cultivate olive and other fruit trees growing within the Security Fence can designate a new site to which the trees will be relocated which has no free access constraints.

Contractors assigned by The Ministry of Defense to build the Security Fence are responsible for carefully uprooting and replanting the trees. So far over 60,000 olive trees have been relocated in accordance with this procedure.
It should be noted that olive trees require scarce treatment, only three weeks
a year.

Is the fence effective?

Between Israel and the areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority there is no natural or man made barrier. This enables the almost unhindered entry of Palestinian terrorists into Israel. During the last three years, 117 Palestinian terrorists took advantage of it, entered into Israel and in the act of blowing themselves up murdered 477 people - Jews, Arabs and Christians and wounded thousands others. In contrast, the security fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip that has existed since 1996 has proven its effectiveness and the vast majority of terrorist attempts have been discovered and thwarted.

The first stage of the Security Fence (from Salem to Elkana) which has been operational since July 2003, is already proving itself as an effective defensive deterrent which prevents the repeated attempts to enter Israel and carry out terror attacks.

Members of Palestinian terror infrastructure caught and questioned disclosed the fact that the existence of the Security Fence in the Samaria area forces them to find of other means to perform terror attacks since their previous entry to Israel is blocked.

What is the goal of the fence from a political point of view?

Israel has sought peace with its neighbors consistently since 1947. As recently as at Camp David in 2000 and later at Taba, the government of Israel made generous offers for peace, which were rejected by Arafat. Currently, Israel has accepted the Road Map for peace and is working for its success. However, until the Palestinians end incitement for terror and actually stop terrorists, Israel must defend its citizens. The government of Israel recognizes that the security fence is a temporary tool needed to protect innocents while diplomatic efforts for a lasting peace continue.

En de Algemene vergadering van de VN heeft Israël veroordeeld.

De houding van de EU jegens Israël is dus vnl gebaseerd op de Israëlische onwil om het probleem TEN GRONDE op te lossen. Maar zoals Solana, hoge EU-gezant voor buitenlandse zaken, vandaag nog benadrukte betekent de Europese houding NIET dat Europa zich "pro-palestijns" zou opstellen, maar wel dat het een bemiddelende rol wil blijven spelen in het conflict.
Natuurlijk willen de Israëli's de EU van de onderhandelingstafel houden. Dat geldt ook voor de VN.

In de hoop dat die mensen uiteindelijk andere (betere) oorden gaan opzoeken, en in de hoop dat Israël ECHT een zuiver joodse staat kan worden?
Overigens is een lijst met terroristische daden van Palestijnse zijde onvoldoende. Ik zou er graag een parallelle lijst bijkrijgen van de Israëlische militaire daden en misdaden naar de Arabische bevolking toe. Bovendien gaat zo'n chronologie voorbij aan de historische samenhang en worden de toenmalige motieven verhuld, en in dit geval, vervangen door de huidige. Sommigen zouden dit anachronistisch noemen.

Ik heb die sites bekeken, ik heb ook al jouw posts gelezen.
Er is natuurlijk gebeurd wat er gebeurd is, maar dat is precies wat achterhaald moet worden bij een historische analyse. Je kan het einddoel niet aanwenden als argument om dat einddoel te bereiken, want dan verkeer je in een cirkelredenering. Maar goed, diverse feitelijkheden wil ik zeker aannemen (onder andere bepaalde aspecten van je verwerping van het regime van Arafat).
Maar jouw zionistische invalshoek verkleurt de zaken zodanig, dat ik niet akkoord kan gaan met je ANALYSE. Geschiedenis is immers niet de simpele weergave van "de feiten", want die bestaan in zekere zin niet. Wat jij vaststelt als een "feit", wordt helemaal anders geïnterpreteerd door anderen. Ook jij RECONSTRUEERT de geschiedenis volgens je eigen inzichten, begrippen en overtuigingen.
Je hebt de "waarheid" dus niet in pacht.
Kentheoretisch en historisch bevinden vele van je opvattingen zich in drijfzand, aangezien je LEGITIMEERT, niet VERKLAART noch WEERGEEFT. De objectieve werkelijkheid is voor subjecten onkenbaar, maar kan wel benaderd worden.
