New study claims 83 autism cases caused by vaccinations
May 23rd, 2011 @ 4:30pm
By Nicole Pollard, ksl.com Contributor

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Researchers released the most recent news in the autism-vaccine debate at a press conference in Washington, D.C., earlier this month.

A study scheduled for publication in the Pace Environmental Law Review closely examined public information on 1,300 cases in which the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program compensated families. Significant brain injuries were found in compensated patients as a direct result of vaccinations. Eighty-three cases specifically resulted in autism and are being called, “the tip of the iceberg.”

Parents of vaccine-injured children were present at the press conference along with representatives from the Elizabeth Birt Center for Autism Law and Advocacy. All participants demanded that Congress acknowledge the findings and explain why the NVICP awarded damages for these cases while the government continues to promote the safety of childhood vaccinations.

"The influence of vaccines on a child cannot explain the measurable dif*ferences in brain structure and brain function that exist between au*tistic and non-autistic children." -American Academy of Pediatrics

The study, “Unanswered Questions From the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program: A Review of Compensated Cases of Vaccine-Induced Brain Injury,” has the autism community talking and eager for congressional hearings to address allegations the government has quietly swept many of these cases under the rug to avoid public scrutiny. The study calls the situation nothing short of a cover-up.

Though it cannot be said that the findings scientifically prove a direct correlation between autism and vaccinations, many believe it is a step toward validating what so many in the autism community have said is at the root of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The full effect this study has on the autism-vaccine debate is yet to be seen.

This announcement may seem like a major setback for the medical community. There have been declines in immunizations at times because of the barrage of information about autism via the Internet and outspoken celebrities, but it is not the first time a major study has pointed to vaccines as a trigger for autism. In February 1998, a well-publicized study conducted in England claimed that the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination was linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder. The lead author of the original study, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, was later discredited and said to have been accepting money from a lawyer suing a vaccine manufacturer. Additionally, the manner he conducted his research in was found to be unethical, unreliable and impossible to duplicate, according to the UK General Medical Council. Ten of the 13 authors of the study later retracted their claim, but the media frenzy had already begun and many parents have held on tightly to the notion that vaccinations are to blame for this epidemic.

Stan Kurtz became a strong advocate and respected figure in the autism community after his son, Ethan, was diagnosed with autism. In response to the autism-vaccine link and recent findings Kurtz said, "You don't hear stories from parents saying, 'One week before my child had their vaccines, they ended up with autism.' What you do hear is, 'I took my child to the doctor, they got vaccinated and they weren't the same shortly after that.'"

Citaat:
Does Vitamin D Deficiency Cause Autism?
by New Autism Cure

In the past few weeks, there have been a couple of reports about Vitamin D in “Scientific American” magazine which both have bearings on autism.

Vitamin D Deficiency Affects the US

The first report was about how Vitamin D deficiency is soaring in the US, according to a study published in the “Archives of Internal Medicine”. The study claimed that a whopping three quarters of US teens and adults have a deficiency of vitamin D – that’s quite an incredible figure and makes you wonder why.

The study’s author, Adit Ginde, from the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, puts this vitamin D deficiency down to skin cancer prevention measures such as wearing long sleeves and using sunscreen ( sun protection of just factor 15 can cut the skin’s ability to manufacture vitamin D by 99%) and points out that there are actually very few dietary sources of vitamin D. Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” because the skin produces vitamin D when it is exposed to the sun. By protecting ourselves from sun exposure, to reduce our risk of melanoma, we are cutting our levels of vitamin D.

Is There a Link between Lack of Sun and Autism?

But what has all this got to do with autism? Doesn’t a vitamin D deficiency lead to bone problems, such as rickets, osteoporosis and arthritis, not autism?

Well, yes, but experts are now wondering if a growth in vitamin D deficiencies has got something to do with the growth in autism. This theory is the result of two preliminary studies in Minnesota and Sweden, and the findings of these studies are discussed in the second article in “Scientific American” magazine.

Both Sweden and Minnesota have large Somali immigrant communities who seem to be overrepresented in the total number of children with autism in each area. In Minnesota, Somali families began arriving in 1993 and the number of children with autism in their community has jumped from 0 out of 1,773 in 1993, to 43 out of 2,029 in 2007. In Sweden, records of Somali children born in Stockholm between 1988 and 1998 have been studied and researchers concluded that Somali children in Stockholm were 3-4 times more likely to suffer with autism than non-Somali children in the city.

The Somali communities in both cities just can’t understand it. In Stockholm, the Somali people call autism “The Swedish Disease” because they had never seen it in Somalia, and Huda Fara, a Somali molecular biologist working in Minnesota, says “We never saw such a disease in Somalia. We do not even have a word for it.”

So why is autism hitting the Somali community so badly?

The only link that researchers could see was to do with sunlight. Both Minnesota and Stockholm are northern latitude countries and so have less hours of sunlight than equatorial Somalia. This means that the Somali communities were having less sun exposure in their new countries and therefore less vitamin D. Adit Ginde also points out that people with darker skins synthesize vitamin D more slowly. It has also been noted that Somali women (including pregnant women) were covering themselves completely when going outside in their new communities, much more than they would have done back in Somali where their whole community was Muslim. Their dress obviously affected their sun exposure levels.

Some experts are arguing that the increase of rates of autism in the Somali communities is just because autism was not being diagnosed in Somalia, due to a lack of awareness, but others are arguing that there may be a vitamin D link with autism. Proponents of this theory put forward the findings of a 2007 review, by Tulane University’s Allan Kalueff, on 20 different studies on animals and humans. Kalueff concluded that vitamin D was essential in gestation and early infanthood for “normal brain functioning”.

Further Evidence

Another study that backs up the vitamin D theory is research carried out by Cornell University and published in “Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine” in November last year. This study found that children who lived in counties in Washington, Oregon and California, where there were more overcast days and more rain, were twice as likely to have autism than children living in drier counties in the same state. Michael Waldman, co-author of the study, said “Our research is sufficiently suggestive of an environmental trigger for autism associated with precipitation, of which vitamin D deficiency is one possibility. Further research focused on vitamin D deficiency is clearly warranted.”

Research into vitamin D and autism is ongoing, including a pilot study by Gene Stubbs (associate professor emeritus of psychiatry and pediatrics at Oregon Health & Science University) with pregnant women. Stubbs is giving 5,000 IUs of vitamin D3 to pregnant women who already have at least one child with autism. He is then going to give the women 7,000 IUs while they are breastfeeding. It will be interesting to see the results of this study.

What Can You Do?

If you are pregnant, you may want to consider taking a special pregnancy supplement which contains vitamin D and making sure that you eat plenty of vitamin D rich foods, such as milk, fatty fish and eggs. However, the best source of vitamin D is the sun, so try and get a little sun each day. Experts agree that 10-15 minutes of sunlight a day, at breakfast time or in the evening when the sun’s rays are not so damaging, can boost vitamin D levels without harming the skin.

Citaat:
Asthma, Autism and Vehicle Exhaust

Kiana Coronado Ziadie (center), who struggles with asthma, accepts an award from First Lady Michelle Obama with Harmony Project Founder Margaret Martin (left).

Kiana Coronado Ziadie lives in an apartment near the Los Angeles River. An overpass at the end of the block lifts the 101 Freeway over both the river and her street.

The day I visit, the eighth grader doesn’t want to talk and she doesn’t want her picture taken, even with her cool new blue hairdo. She hasn’t been feeling well. Asthma and a virus that’s going around have her huddled beneath a blanket on the couch.

Between phone calls to nail down an appointment with the pediatrician and showing off a photo of Kiana at the White House, Kiana’s mother, Diana Machado, tells me she and her three daughters, Kiana, Sarah and Daniela, have lived in this apartment since June. Before that, they lived in Hancock Park and the girls were born at Cedars Sinai Medical Cener. All three girls have asthma, but Kiana’s is by far the worst. Her first attack, when she was 2, hospitalized her for two weeks. “With her, I have to use medication every day,” says Machado, showing me a list of at least six medicines Kiana takes regularly, including antihistamine pills, an inhaler and a nebulizer. Kiana is also allergic to dust and animal dander, and has an epi pen so she can inject herself if she has a particularly bad reaction.

More than 2.7 million children in L.A. County have asthma, and the government reported in January that the national rate is now 8.2%. Studies increasingly point to pollution from freeways as an aggravator, if not a cause, of childhood asthma. And that isn’t the only problem experts think they can pin on vehicular exhaust.

The latest is a December study examining the possible link between vehicle exhaust and autism. The CDC says autism rates jumped 57% between 2002 and 2006, but can’t explain the increase. Heather Volk, Ph.D., lead author of the study that suggests an air pollution-autism connection, says nearness to freeways was a natural way to pinpoint families breathing high levels of airborne toxins. “Within 300 meters (1,000 feet) of a freeway, those levels are quite high,” says Volk, who holds appointments in the Community, Health Outcomes & Intervention Research Program at The Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute and the Department of Preventative Medicine at USC.
Children born to mothers in the study living this close to freeways appeared to be twice as likely to develop autism, Volk and her colleagues concluded. And because the study looked at the child’s exposure both in the womb and immediately after birth, exposure as an infant could also be a factor. Future studies are set to help determine the dose of toxins, and the specific components of vehicle exhaust, most closely associated with autism.

Since 1999, John Froines and his colleagues at the Southern California Particle Center have been on the trail of what they consider one of the most toxic part of vehicle exhaust: the ultrafine particle. They are close to teasing out the exact pathway between breathing in these particles and developing asthma.

The airborne particles from diesel exhaust, Froines explains, are made up of a black carbon core with organic chemicals and metals packed around it. These particles are not only small enough to be inhaled, they are small enough to enter the body’s cells, where the materials clustered around the core can react with the body’s DNA. “The lung is remodeled, as it were,” says Froines. “You have changes in the lung itself.” Though they are still nailing down the specific protein signaling pathways involved, he and colleagues believe that this leads to sensitization, and eventually to asthma.

Froines says the autism-air pollution connection is likely more complicated, because it probably results from the contaminants the mother is breathing somehow being transferred to her unborn child. And there could be genetic factors at work as well. “On a mechanistic basis, it’s probably too early to say precisely how you go from A to Z,” he says.

Unlike larger particles (PM10 and PM2.5), which EPA can easily weigh, measure and set standards for, ultrafines are as yet unregulated. But Froines says that they make up about 90% of diesel exhaust, and that there are an average of 600,000 of them in your average sugar cube-sized patch of air as the 710 Freeway approaches Long Beach. Sometimes that airborne cube can pack as many as 3 million. And while sampling these particles is more difficult, Froines says it is important to continue to learn about them. “We’ve shown that ultrafines are more toxic,” he says.

Work on the topic, however, suffered a blow last year when the center lost its EPA grant funding. EPA established five particulate matter research centers in 1999, and has funded them in five-year cycles ever since. But in 2010 the agency shifted the focus of its grant program, and funded four “Clean Air Research Centers,” which an agency spokesperson says have “more of a focus on multi-pollutant air exposures,” instead. The Southern California Particle Center wasn’t awarded one of these grants, and no clean air center was established in Los Angeles.

The Southern California Particle Center grant runs through 2011, but without additional funding will end its work at the end of the year. Froines says it is the only center really focused on ultrafines. Centers in other areas – like the East Coast – are more focused on larger particulate in emissions from coal-fired power plants. “We’re the people who said you’ve got to focus on mobile sources. So now there’s no place that’s being funded by EPA where that emphasis is being addressed,” he says. “EPA was good to have put together these centers to really look at the particles, but I worry what will happen now,” Froines says. “It is mind boggling, when you think about it, that there’s no center in Los Angeles.”

In her neighborhood near the freeway, the air still can trigger Kiana’s asthma, especially in summer, but her condition is better controlled now. There was a time when attacks landed her in the ER at least twice a year. “Kiana was missing so much school they called me from the office,” Machado says. Thanks to help from the Los Angeles Unified School District Asthma Program, the family is more diligent about using control medications, and Kiana now uses a spacer with her inhaler to make it more effective. They visit the Breathmobile, a mobile asthma treatment center funded by the county health department and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, where doctors help her asthma management stay on track. “We didn’t do that before,” Machado says. “We just got treated when the asthma came.”

She’s a student at Millikan Middle School’s performing arts magnet in Sherman Oaks and plays the violin in the Harmony Project, a program that brings music programs to at-risk kids. In 2009 she got to visit the White House to help project founder Margaret Martin receive an award from First Lady Michelle Obama. She still misses school sometimes, but she’s hanging in there. “Of course her grades decay, but she’s a smart girl,” says her mother. And in the past year, she hasn’t been to the emergency room once.

George Washington University researcher, Dr. Valerie Hu, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and her team at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, found that male and female sex hormones regulate expression of an important gene RORA through a mechanism that could explain not only higher levels of testosterone observed in some individuals with autism, but also why males have a higher incidence of autism than females.

The gene, RORA, encodes a protein that works as a "master switch" for gene expression, and is critical in the development of the cerebellum as well as in many other processes that are impaired in autism. Dr. Hu’s earlier research found that RORA was decreased in the autistic brain. In this study, the research group demonstrates that aromatase, a protein which is regulated by RORA, is also reduced in autistic brains.

This is significant because aromatase converts testosterone to estrogen. Thus, a decrease in aromatase is expected to lead in part to build up of male hormones which, in turn, further decrease RORA expression, as demonstrated in this study using a neuronal cell model. On the other hand, female hormones were found to increase RORA in the neuronal cells. The researchers believe that females may be more protected against RORA deficiency not only because of the positive effect of estrogen on RORA expression, but also because estrogen receptors, which regulate some of the same genes as RORA, can help make up for the deficiency in RORA.

To find out how RORA is affected by hormones, Hu’s team bathed human brain cells expressing the gene in either oestradiol – a form of the major female sex hormone oestrogen – or the male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is derived from testosterone. They found that oestradiol enhanced the gene’s expression, whereas DHT suppressed it.

The team also discovered that RORA regulates another gene which controls aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to oestrogen. If RORA is under-expressed, then aromatase cannot function properly and testosterone will accumulate.

In a whole organism, this excess testosterone may in turn further repress the expression of RORA, making matters worse. Elevated levels of testosterone in the womb are thought to contribute to the development of autism. However, if the RORA gene is faulty in a female fetus, it would be less susceptible to a build-up of testosterone because the fetus has higher levels of oestrogen to begin with. What’s more, female sex hormones are likely to promote any RORA that is expressed, rather than further repress it.

"For a long time elevated fetal testosterone has been a proposed as risk factor for autism, but the problem is that there has been no molecular explanation," says Hu. "Now we have evidence for a really exacerbating situation. What we have identified is an inhibitory feedback loop. That is what makes this so fascinating."

"It is well known that males have a higher tendency for autism than females; however, this new research may, for the first time, provide a molecular explanation for why and how this happens. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of understanding some of the biology underlying autism, and we will continue our work to discover new ways to understand and, hopefully, to someday combat this neurodevelopmental disorder," said Dr. Hu.

If there's one thing that cranks routinely do when they can't win on science is to shift to other venues to try to win their case and to convince people that they are not, in fact, cranks. After all, if they stuck to arguing facts, science, and evidence, they wouldn't be cranks. They also wouldn't have a prayer of obtaining influence because the science is so much against them. So, failing at science yet again, what the anti-vaccine movement has done is to move over to law, in essence claiming that legal decisions mean that there is a scientific case to be made in favor of the hypothesis that vaccines cause autism. This is a fallacious argument at its core, because findings of law all too often have very little to do with findings of science.

(over desinformatie gesproken )
