Although President Obama wants to downgrade America’s involvement in the Middle East now the U.S. can rely on reserves of cheap shale oil and gas at home, his own somewhat ostentatious concern for human rights keeps sucking him back in to side with the rebels.

That is also broadly the position of Britain and France, whose leaders seem swayed by lurid and unverified social media footage of atrocities.

But while leading NATO nations line up in sympathy with the rebels, on the other side President Assad is being backed by Russia — a long-time friend of Syria — and by China.

Russia and China feel they were tricked by the West over the way the Libyan regime was overthrown with Western aid two years ago, and are determined Assad won’t be ousted and murdered like Gaddafi.

The war in Syria therefore has had a destabilising effect on the entire region, and could exert a terrifying domino effect as states disintegrate.

Whether such a nightmare scenario can be avoided — and global superpowers can be persuaded to keep their powder dry — we must wait to see with baited breath.

Nu Obama inzake Syrië een duidelijke positie heeft ingenomen, voelt Israël zich opnieuw sterk en het IDF bombardeert opnieuw heimelijk de Syrische souvereine.

Een luchthaven en radarinstallaties moeten eraan geloven :

A Syrian television station sympathetic to anti-Assad rebels reported that Israel was responsible for the strike on a facility west of Damascus, which targeted advanced weapons and radar systems.

“Eyewitnesses said that the explosions were large and that neither the Assad regime nor the rebels had the capability to create explosions of such a magnitude,” reports the Jerusalem Post.

17 juni 2013 - ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland — With the crisis in Syria dominating a meeting of the G8 nations, talks were due Monday night to press Russia to overcome its deep differences with other industrialized nations and agree a series of principles over how to achieve a transition from the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

A British official, speaking on condition of anonymity per diplomatic protocol, said the hopes were for a discussion, to take place over dinner, that would be a “clarifying moment,” revealing whether Russia would be prepared to join – or stand aside from — a summit communiqué by the other seven nations.

The Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin,has supported Mr. Assad and warned against American plans to begin sending some arms to rebels there.

Ahead of the dinner, President Barack Obama was to meet with Mr. Putin and to try to persuade him to put pressure on Mr. Assad to negotiate a transition.

Britain’s prime minister, David Cameron, who has pushed hard for help for the Syrian opposition but has not agreed to help arm them, is leading the talks, which are taking place in a golfing resort in Northern Ireland.

The five principles due to be discussed over dinner are provision of humanitarian assistance; moves to combat extremist elements; a declaration that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable; preparations for stabilization after a change of government; and discussion over a transition to a new executive authority in Syria.

The discussions avoid the contentious issue of arming Syria’s rebels — which divides Europeans — and an agreement could form the basis of a peace talks that international leaders have been trying to arrange. British officials hope that Mr. Assad could be persuaded to send a representative to those discussions, paving the way for him to eventually relinquish power.

Putin said "of course our opinions do not coincide, but all of us have the intention to stop the violence in Syria and to stop the growth of victims and to solve the situation peacefully, including by bringing the parties to the negotiations table in Geneva. We agreed to push the parties to the negotiations table."

While Putin has called for negotiated peace talks, he has not urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave power, and he remains one of Assad's strongest political and military allies. The White House did not expect any breakthrough with Putin on Syria during the gathering of the Group of Eight Summit and the meeting further highlighted the rift between the two countries on how to address the fighting in Syria.

Ik las gisteren nog een artikel van een uitgesproken pro Israël oorlogshavik (het soort dat niet nalaat op te roepen dat Iran dient gebombardeerd) die meestal goed overeenkomt met de positie van de regering in Tel Aviv, en die wil liever een opsplitsing van Syrië in drie delen: een Alawitisch deel in het noord westen, een soennitisch deel in het Centrum en een Koerdisch deel in het noord oosten. Verdeel en heers lijkt me. De soennieten komen dan zonder zee te zitten en de rest is afgesloten van Iran. Gevolg is ook geen Iran-middelandse zee pijpleiding.

Tien jaar geleden las ik krak hetzelfde op forum.politics.be. Vervang Syrië met Irak en zonbron met de vorige zeurpiet wiens naam ik ondertussen al lang vergeten ben.
In 2023 komt er weer een onderwerp over wereldoorlog 3, maar dan misschien met Iran als onderwerp en weer een andere eindeloze zeveraar.

Tien jaar geleden las ik krak hetzelfde op forum.politics.be. Vervang Syrië met Irak en zonbron met de vorige zeurpiet wiens naam ik ondertussen al lang vergeten ben.
In 2023 komt er weer een onderwerp over wereldoorlog 3, maar dan misschien met Iran als onderwerp en weer een andere eindeloze zeveraar.
