Wie levend wordt gevangen wordt gemarteld en in vele gevallen vermoord. Er vallen dagelijks doden, soms honderden op een dag. Er zoudenn reeds meer dan 6.000 mensen zijn gedood waaronder 400 kinderen, zo zeggen de instanties van de VN.

Ik hoop dat ze die Assad levend vangen en naar Den Haag sturen om zich te verantwoorden voor zijn misdaden tegen de menselijkheid.

In Syrië zijn de afgelopen maanden al zeker 400 kinderen gedood. Dat heeft Unicef verklaard, de kinderrechtenorganisatie van de Verenigde Naties. De organisatie baseert zich op berichten van Syrische mensenrechtenorganisaties die zij "betrouwbaar" achten, aldus een woordvoerster van Unicef in Genève.

Ongeveer evenveel minderjarigen kwamen in gevangenissen terecht, weet Unicef. De veiligheidsdiensten van dictator Bashar al-Assad zouden zich gedurende de afgelopen elf maanden ook schuldig hebben gemaakt aan marteling en seksueel misbruik van kinderen die werden gevangengenomen. (adha)

The weapons include advanced SA missiles, high-trajectory long-range rockets and missiles, and biological and chemical weapons, the officials said.

Speaking last week at the Herzliya Conference, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said: "It is difficult to predict exactly what will happen in Syria. We're watching for attempts to pass advanced weapons systems that could edge the delicate balance in Lebanon to Hezbollah."

Incoming Israel Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel told foreign journalists in Jerusalem last month that, as far as Assad's fall is concerned, "the question is when, not if. And the big question is what will happen the following day."

Eshel said Israel's immediate concern is Syria's huge cache of chemical and biological weapons - coming mainly from East European states - and into whose hands it will fall.

"What has been passed on to Hezbollah so far? What will be passed on in the future? What will be divided between the two factions in Syria?" he asked.

Israel has been warning for several years that Syria may provide Hezbollah with advanced weapons systems. The foreign media reported that Hezbollah has maintained training bases and arsenals in Syria, near the Lebanon border, since 2008. Arab media reported Syria had moved Scud missiles to Hezbollah camps in Lebanon and that advanced SA missiles had been set up in the mountains of Lebanon.

Other reports, unconfirmed by Israel, said Israel considered attacking convoys carrying weapons from Syria to Lebanon on several occasions in recent years.

However, the concern is greater now because Assad's forces seem to be losing their grip on the state. This could result in passing weapons to Hezbollah, or in radical Sunni factions taking over the arsenals, the officials said.

After Muammar Gadhafi's regime collapsed in Libya last year, the army's caches were looted and SA missiles and rockets found their way to various terror organizations - from militias in east Africa, to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, officials said.

Christians Under Attack From Anti-Government Protesters in Syria

Christian communities across Syria have been attacked by anti-government protesters in recent weeks.

International Christian Concern says that protesters are being led by hard-line Islamists and that Christians have come under pressure to either join in protests demanding the resignation of President Bashir Assad, or else leave the country.

Eye witnesses report seeing around 20 masked men on motorcycles open fire on a home in a Christian village outside Dara’a, in southern Syria.

Another source told ICC that churches had received threatening letters over Easter, telling them either to join the protests or leave.

In Karak, Muslim Salafists forced villagers to join the protests and remove pictures of the president from their home. One man who refused was reportedly found hanged on his front porch the next morning.

One Syrian Christian leader told ICC: “People want to go out and peacefully ask for certain changes, but Muslim Salafi groups are sneaking in with their goal, which is not to make changes for the betterment of Syria, but to take over the country with their agenda.

“We want to improve life and rights in Syria under this president, but we do not want terrorism. Christians will be the first to pay the price of terrorism.”

ICC fears that the intimidation tactics may drive Christians out of Syria in a similar way to the exodus of believers from other parts of the Middle East, most notably Iraq.

Syrian Christians fear that if the hardliners succeed in taking over the government, they will try to drive Christians out of the country.

One Syrian Christian leader told ICC: “If Muslim Salafis gain political influence, they will make sure that there will be no trace of Christianity in Syria.”

Another source told ICC that protesters in Duma, a suburb of Damascus, were last week heard shouting: “Alawites to the grave and Christians to Beirut!”

ICC’s regional manager for the Middle East, Aidan Clay, urged the U.S. administration to take a cautious approach in its diplomatic relations with Syria.

“Unlike in Egypt, where Christians predominantly supported the revolution that removed President Hosni Mubarak from power, Syrian Christians have not participated in protests, anticipating that chaos and bloodshed will follow if radical Islam takes hold of the country,” he said.

“Throughout the Middle East, Christians have been fleeing their homeland in unprecedented numbers. Now, in a country where Christians have historically taken refuge from nearby purges in places like Turkey a century ago and Iraq in recent years, Islamists are threatening their existence.

“We urge the U.S. Government to act wisely and carefully when developing policies that have deep political ramifications for Syria’s minorities by not indirectly supporting a foothold to be used by radical Islamists to carry out their anti-Christian agenda.”

The Syrian constitution provides for freedom of religion but the government imposes restrictions on this right. Sunnis constitute 74 percent of the population while various Christian groups constitute 10 percent, although there are estimates that the Christian population, mostly due to migration, may have dropped to 8 percent, according to the U.S. State Department's International Religious Freedom report.

Important Letter from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights about Rami Abdul Rahman.

Dear Sir/Madam

We would like to apologise for any confusion that you may be currently experiencing with regards to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

We would like to take this opportunity to give you some background information for your benefit.

Firstly, there is NO individual by the name of Rami Abdul Rahman. This is just an alias that was being used by all SOHR members and mainly by the founders of the SOHR when articles were being originally published.

There is however a gentleman based in Coventry whose primary profession is installing satellite dishes who volunteered at the SOHR in late 2010. This gentleman is called Mr Osama Ali Suleiman and as a volunteer he contributed in publishing the Arabic language news articles on the SOHR website www.syriahr.net. This was the full extend of his remit and contribution, as a volunteer of this organisation. It is worth noting that Mr Osama is unable to communicate professionally in English language and only had a very modest level of education in Syria.

In August 2011 the board of trustees asked Mr Osama to cease publishing news articles onto the syriahr.net website as it was alleged that he had established links with Mr Rifaat Al Assad (the uncle of the current Syrian President Bashar Al Assad). The very nature of the articles being published were also controversial as they were not verified by any other member of SOHR and they referred to incidents and deaths suffered by the Syrian regime security forces. The reasons as to why this raised suspicions is because the Observatory does not have any links with Syrian regime members in order to be able to state or verify any such incidents.

When Mr Osama was asked to give up his volunteer post he retaliated by changing all the username and password details of the www.syriahr.net website so that only he could access it and publish material and subsequently declared himself chairman. He started using the Rami Abdul Rahman alias which the rest of the memebrs abandoned as it was decided after the eruption of the Syrian uprising on the 15 March 2011 that, in the interest of transparency, only real names were to be used from that point on when communicating with the press.

The rest of the organisation decided that due to the swift developing nature of the Syrian uprising no time should be wasted in altercating with Mr Osama as the website that he was controlling doesn't ever hold any useful/recent information on Syria and that he would not be able to actually engage in any activity with the English speaking press. As a result www.syriahr.org was established and it gets regularly updated (in both Arabic and English) with the developments on the ground in Syria.

Ignoring Mr Osama for this length of time appears to have been a misjudgment by the rest of the SOHR members as it appears that Mr Osama has since sought and acquired some support from fellow friends in order to boost his claims and spoil the reputation of the SOHR. We are deeply concerned as we have been informed that Mr Osama himself is a member of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) and these friends are suspected to be affiliated with same organisation as well.

Further proof of the isolation of Mr Osama is given by the fact that he currently has no operational team and that he acts authoritatively with no peers to verify, support or challenge his work.

You will already be aware that the SOHR is London based. This is because the majority of our members are based in London whereas Mr Osama is solely based in Coventry.

We at the SOHR are now seeking legal advice and are preparing to take legal action against Mr Osama whilst we remain committed to our cause of flagging human rights abuses committed in Syria to the international community and media.

A Statement of Condemnation of the lack of Professionalism of Osama Ali Suleiman (Rami Abdul-Rahman)



We the undersigned express our deep condemnation of the unprofessional news, which does not meet the minimum ethics of Human Rights or honorable media activities that Mr. Osama Suleiman (Rami Abdul-Rahman) has been publishing about the Syrian Revolution for the following reasons:



First: when he equals the executioner and the victim: through propagating false claims about imaginary numbers of the security and army elements killed, and that are stated only by Mr. Osama Suleiman (Rami Abdul-Rahman) who does not rely on any documentation of the numbers he gives.

Second: provoking sectarian tensions: especially in the areas where different sects live together by pretending that the crimes of the security forces are just sectarian fighting, the thing that is not true. Such behaviour of Mr. Osama does participate in generating certain reactions that do not serve but the regime in this sensitive stage of the national uprising longing for freedom in Syria.

Third: questioning the credibility of all Syrian commissions, committees, and figures interested in documenting the crimes committed by the Syrian regime: that is through questioning and unjustifiably attacking all other commissions and committees and stigmatizing their credibility and reports in an attempt to show that he is the only trusted source of information about the Syrian Revolution, despite of the fact that he has never supported any of the reports he issued since the eruption of the Revolution with the number of victims with their names or places in which they were killed; whereas, all other commissions and committee do this.



Accordingly, we call for the necessity to stop all direct or indirect kinds of dealing with Mr. Osama Ali Suleiman (Rami Abdul-Rahman) as it may have a negative role in distorting the facts and the real situation in Syria, which might lead to elongating the sufferings of Syrians and deviating their struggle for freedom, and do badly for the efforts of thousands of pro-revolution activists, regardless of their ideological, racial or religious backgrounds, who have been working hardly as unknown volunteers in supportive for the great Syrian people and their human rights.

Afijn, aanvullend is wat veel gezegd, de omvang van de slachtpartijen en de opzettelijke misdaden tegen de menselijkheid zijn ondertussen klaar en duidelijk.

"Sluipschutters vermoorden willekeurig kinderen in Syrië"



Het Syrische regime zet sluipschutters in om willekeurig kinderen en vrouwen te doden, dat blijkt uit een recent rapport van de Verenigde Naties. De internationale organisatie beschuldigde het land eerder al van misdaden tegen de mensheid. De nieuwe documenten leggen echter meer gruwel bloot: over het lukraak terroriseren van ongewapende onschuldige burgers en het systematisch arresteren en martelen van gewonde Syriërs die 'mogelijk' deelnamen aan betogingen tegen president Assad.

"De gruwel die de Syrische bevolking treft, kon stelselmatig bevestigd worden door onafhankelijke getuigen en slachtoffers", meldt Yakin Ertürk, die het VN-rapport hielp opstellen.

Zo zou onder meer bewezen zijn dat sluipschutters van het Syrische leger en leden van Shabbiha, een militie die het regime steunt, de bevolking geregeld terroriseren, door op strategisch uitgekozen plaatsen kinderen, vrouwen en andere ongewapende burgers te martelen en te doden. Dichtbevolkte wijken worden ook gebombardeerd met clusterspringtuig, klinkt het in het rapport.

Het document bevat naast de beschuldigingen ook een lijst met Syrische hoge ambtenaren die voor de misdaden verantwoordelijk worden geacht. Ook de Syrische president Bashar al-Assad wordt vernoemd, meldt de krant The Guardian. Wie de overige leden zijn, is nog onbekend. Volgens de VN is het daarvoor wachten op een onderzoek van de eigenlijke misdaden door een internationale rechtbank. Rusland en China steunen dergelijke internationale actie alvast niet. Een eerdere VN-Veiligheidsraad daarover blokkeerden zij met hun vetorecht.

Duizenden doden
Vrouwen en kinderen worden niet alleen mishandeld en gedood door aanhangers van Assad, stelt het VN-rapport. Ook leden van rebellengroepen maken zich eraan schuldig. Al zou hun aandeel veel kleiner zijn dan "de duizenden doden die het regime al op zijn geweten heeft".

Alistair Burt, de Britse staatssecretaris voor het Midden Oosten, zei ontzet te zijn door de vermelde gruwel. Hij riep de Syrische autoriteiten en rebellen dan ook op de mensenrechten te respecteren en het geweld onmiddellijk te beëindigen. Burt wil ook dat hulporganisaties hun werk kunnen doen.

"De tijd dringt"
Het Syrische oppositielid Omar Shaker vertelde Associated Press dat er in het land een nijpend tekort dreigt aan voedsel en medicijnen. "De tijd dringt. Iedere minuut is van belang", benadrukte hij. Binnenkort zullen ook Syriërs sterven omdat de oorlog hen verhinderd om te slapen en te eten, aldus Shaker.

Arabische en westerse leiders zitten vandaag intussen samen in Tunis om voor het geweld in Syrië een oplossing te zoeken. De delegatie hoopt op een eengemaakte oppositie tegen het Syrische regime, een wapenstilstand en verbeterde levensomstandigheden voor de bevolking. China en Rusland zijn de grote afwezigen op de bijeenkomst in de Tunesische hoofdstad. (adha)
