De Belgen blijven verrassen op het EK hockey in Manchester. Waar de ploeg van bondscoach Adam Commens eerder al gelijkspeelde tegen Engeland, werd gisteren voor een heuse stunt gezorgd. Wereldkampioen Duitsland kwam niet verder dan een 2-2 tegen de Belgische nationale hockeymannen.
Regerend wereldkampioen Duitsland kwam in de eerste helft binnen twintig minuten op een comfortabele voorsprong van 2-0 door doelpunten van Matthias Witthaus en Cristophe Zeller. De kersverse Australische coach van de Belgen moedigde zijn mannen extra aan en dat resulteerde in de aansluitingstreffer van Loïc Vandeweghe. De speler van La Gantoise zette zijn stick tegen de inkomende bal na de vrije slag van Phillipe Goldberg.

In de tweede helft gingen de Duivels op zoek naar de gelijkmaker. Na enkele verijdelde kansen van de stick van Vandeweghe maakte John-John Dohmen vier minuten voor tijd uiteindelijk de verlossende treffer. Duitsland ging overhaast op zoek naar de winnende goal, maar de Belgen hielden stand.

Engeland neemt leiding over van Duitsland in poule A

De Engelse heren hebben overtuigend gewonnen van Tsjechië. Door de 7-0 winst heeft Engeland zich aan de leiding genesteld van poule A. Richard Mantell nam drie doelpunten voor zijn rekening. Barry Middleton wist twee maal te scoren en Matt Daly scoorde evenals Martin Jones één maal. Engeland heeft, net als Duitsland, vier punten uit twee duels, maar twee doelpunten meer gescoord. België staat met twee punten derde en heeft nog steeds uitzicht op de halve finale, omdat Engeland en Duitsland elkaar nog treffen in de derde poulewedstrijd. Bij een gelijkspel tussen Engeland en Duitsland moeten de Belgen zelf met zes doelpunten verschil winnen van de Tscjechen. Bij winst van eender wie in Engeland - Duitsland hebben de Belgen genoeg aan eender welke winnende score tegen de Tsjechen.

De beste drie van het Ek mogen rechtstreeks naar Peking.

Het zou wat zijn mocht naast de voetbalploeg de selectie ook uitgebreid worden met een hockeyploeg.
