John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore :

John Hopkins (1795–1873), a Baltimore merchant and banker, left an estate of approximately $7 million (US$173.84 million in 2022[11]) when he died on December 24, 1873

Initial plans for the hospital were drafted by surgeon John Shaw Billings, and the architecture designed by John Rudolph Niernsee

The trustees obtained the services of four outstanding physicians, known as the "Big Four," to serve as the founding staff of the hospital when it opened on May 7, 1889. They were pathologist William Henry Welch, surgeon William Stewart Halsted, internist William Osler, and gynecologist Howard Atwood Kelly.[14]

The second Saint John Customs House at 189 Prince William Street in Saint John, ca. 1900. Construction began after the original Customs House burnt down in the Saint John fire of 1877. Although this building has "1880" inscribed in the center at the top, it was officially completed and opened in 1881. This building was demolished replaced by the current (2013) structure in the late 1950s after an act of architectural vandalism.

Dus afgebrand 1877 in "a great fire" en 4 jaar later staar er dit... wat een logistiek en vakmanschap toch?!

The Saint Charles Hotel, New Orleans, US...

Are you ready?

The old St. Charles or Exchange Hotel, as it was generally called, was commenced in the summer of 1835.

1835! Want er was toen nood aan zo'n hotel, mensen leefden in houten krotten en kakten in een emmer bij kaarslicht ma zagen idd de nood voor een hotel zoals dit, heel normaal.

Beschrijving hier, zeker lezen, want toen was dat normaal :

It had a neoclassical front, capped by a tall, white cupola, second in size to only the dome of the Capitol at Washington.[3] Center with the cupola was a projecting portico of six Corinthian columns, from which a flight of marble steps led to the hotel. The bar-room in the basement was octagonal in shape, 70 feet (21 m) in diameter and 20 feet (6.1 m) high, having an exterior circle of Ionic columns. The architecture of this room was Ionic, and that of the saloon immediately over the ball room which was 18 feet (5.5 m) high, Corinthian. From the street, a flight of marble steps led to the lower saloon, at the summit of which was a handsome marble statue of Washington. From the saloon a grand spiral staircase continues up to the dome, with a gallery stretching around it on each of the upper stories. The dome was 46 feet (14 m) in diameter, surmounting an octagon building elevated upon an order of fluted columns. Above the dome was an elegant Corinthian turret. A circular room under the dome on the floor of which the spiral staircase terminated possessed a beautiful gallery, 11 feet (3.4 m) wide, from which the whole city could be seen, at a height of 185 feet (56 m).

The hotel opened in 1837 and was destroyed by fire on January 18, 1851

A larger hotel was rebuilt at a cost of $800,000. Barker retained very little interest in the hotel, and took no part in the rebuilding.[6] The second hotel opened in January 1853

Dus 2 jaar later staat er opnieuw, een nog groter hotel! Man die ezels en karren, die hamers en dat armzweet!

In 1888, the house had 400 rooms, accommodation for between 600 and 700 guests. There were 30 parlors and 100 bathrooms. It peaked in popularity during the Mardi Gras, when the building often become overcrowded.
