Kapolei Energy Storage (KES) is ideaal gelegen op ongeveer acht hectare grond in Kapolei op het eiland Oahu, waar het zal worden aangesloten op een kritisch Hawaiian Electric-substation. Het batterijopslagproject van 185 MW / 565 MWh zal diensten voor belastingverschuiving en snelle frequentierespons leveren aan Hawaiian Electric, waardoor de betrouwbaarheid van het elektriciteitsnet wordt vergroot en de integratie van direct beschikbare hernieuwbare energie wordt versneld. KES kreeg in mei 2021 goedkeuring van de Hawai'i Public Utilities Commission. De bouw van de Kapolei Energy Storage-faciliteit is aan de gang.

De voltooiing van het KES-project in de winter van 2023 zal helpen bij de vervanging van de AES-kolencentrale die op 1 september 2022 werd gesloten, ter ondersteuning van het doel van de staat om over te schakelen van fossiele brandstoffen naar 100 procent hernieuwbare energieopwekking.

About the Project

Kapolei Energy Storage (KES) is ideally located on roughly eight acres of land in Kapolei on the island of Oahu, where it will interconnect at a critical Hawaiian Electric substation. The 185 MW / 565 MWh battery storage project will provide load shifting and fast-frequency response services to Hawaiian Electric, enhancing grid reliability and accelerating the integration of readily available renewable energy. KES received approval from the Hawai’i Public Utilities Commission in May 2021. Construction of the Kapolei Energy Storage facility is underway.

The Winter 2023 completion of the KES project will help replace the AES coal-fired plant that closed on September 1, 2022, supporting the state’s goal of shifting from fossil fuels to 100 percent renewable energy generation.

The KES project received unanimous support from the local Neighborhood Board and approval of its Conditional Use Permit-Minor from the City and County of Honolulu. Situated in I-2 (Industrial) zoning outside the Tsunami Evacuation Zone, the KES project site is an optimal location for new energy infrastructure.
