ISIS dwazen gebruiken nauwelijks hun verstand, ik ga dan ook geen waarde hechten aan hun interpretaties.

KIRKUK: Iraqi security forces backed by volunteer militiamen Thursday retook several villages located on the way to the town of Amerli, which jihadists have besieged for months, officers said.

Time is running out for Amerli's Shiite Turkmen-majority residents, who face danger both because of their faith, which jihadists consider heresy, and their resistance against the militants, which has drawn deadly retribution elsewhere.

And the town, besieged since militants led by the ISIS jihadist group launched a sweeping offensive in June, is without electricity and running dangerously short on both food and water.

Army Staff Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir al-Zaidi told AFP that villages north of Al-Adhaim were retaken as part of a major operation aimed at advancing toward Amerli.

Brig. Gen. Khalaf Jassem confirmed that the villages had been retaken, and like Zaidi put the toll for militants at more than two dozen dead.

Senior Iraqi officials and officers frequently report large militant death tolls, but they are usually impossible to independently confirm.

In addition to the Iraqi forces advancing toward Amerli from the south, a civilian volunteer commander said that thousands of Shiite militiamen from groups including Asaib Ahl al-Haq and the Badr Organization were gathering in the Tuz Khurmatu area, north of Amerli, in preparation for a battle to break the siege.

But reliance on such groups carries risks, especially after 70 people were gunned down in a Sunni mosque on August 22 by suspected Shiite militiamen.

Officials say that Washington is weighing both aid drops and air strikes to help the town.

"It could be a humanitarian operation. It could be a military operation. It could be both," a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.

And Iraqi aircraft are already carrying out strikes targeting the militants.

There is "no possibility of evacuating them so far," Eliana Nabaa, spokeswoman for the U.N. mission in Iraq, said of Amerli residents.

U.N. Iraq envoy Nickolay Mladenov has called for an urgent effort to help Amerli, saying residents face a "possible massacre" if the town is overrun

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti urged young people Thursday to ignore calls to jihad from people representing "deviant principles," the latest salvo in an anti-militant campaign by the kingdom's religious establishment.

Riyadh, the world's No.1 oil exporter, is unnerved by the rapid advance in Iraq and Syria of ISIS insurgents and fears this could radicalize some of its own citizens and eventually lead to attacks on the U.S.-allied government.

The word "deviant" is usually used in official and religious Saudi circles to refer to the Islamist militant ideology followed by Al-Qaeda, of which ISIS is an offshoot.

Sheikh Abdul-Aziz al-Sheikh, the highest religious authority in the country, this month described the creed of Al-Qaeda and ISIS as Islam's "enemy number one," a message echoed in Friday sermons across the country.

Riyadh is among the main backers of mostly Sunni Muslim rebels, although not ISIS, fighting President Bashar Assad of Syria. While Saudi preachers have backed the rebels' campaign as a jihad on the part of the Syrian people, they have said it is not a jihad for Saudis.

In 2003-06, Saudi Al-Qaeda militants who had fought in Iraq and Afghanistan returned to the kingdom and assaulted foreign and government targets. Hundreds of them have since been sentenced to prison including 23 Wednesday.

In February King Abdullah decreed long prison terms for anybody who travelled overseas to fight.

On Monday, Saudi authorities detained eight men they accused of helping others go to Syria to fight. The daily Saudi Gazette reported Thursday that these included two imams of mosques in the small town of Tumair, north of Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia follows the ultra-conservative Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam, but while many of its views on public morality, Islamic law and religious heresy resemble those of Islamist militants, it differs from them in its political doctrine.

The Wahhabi religious establishment, whose most important members enjoy senior state positions and oversee a lavish religious infrastructure, believe that politics, foreign policy and declarations of jihad should be determined by the king.

In the past decade Saudi authorities have imprisoned a small number of clerics who backed Al-Qaeda, have sacked hundreds more for sermons seen as backing militant ideology and restricted the power to issue fatwas (religious edicts) to a few top preachers.

Inderdaad. Eerst die oproep om alle kerken op het arabische schiereiland te vernietigen.

Vervolgens, als het dan effectief plaatsheeft, zijn het plots "vernietigers van de beschaving".

Waarom veroordeelde niemand, ook niemand in België, die oproep niet in eerste instantie?

De oproep was een duidelijk bewijs dat Saoedi-Arabië voor miljarden aan wapens plus soldij voor huurlingen naar Syrië heeft gebracht. En IS groot gemaakt heeft.

Werkelijk miljarden werden vanuit Saoedi-Arabië naar Syrië gebracht.
