Standaard Libertas condemns European Commission’s cynical and anti-transparent actions against

In a cynical attempt to influence Irish voters should a second Lisbon Treaty referendum take place, the European Commission is shelving any legislation which it fears might cause debate in Ireland. Should a vote take place on the Treaty the proposed legislation would be introduced afterwards.

A report today on the “European Voice” website says that the European Commission will wait for the referendum before proposing new rules on divorce because it is sensitive to any proposals which may have a negative influence on the treaty debate in Ireland. Earlier this month the Commission postponed a plan to have inheritance claims recognised across Member States until after an Irish referendum.

The European Commission is also spending €1.8 million of European taxpayers money to ‘educate’ the Irish people on the benefits of the EU and the Lisbon Treaty.

Libertas Chairman Declan Ganley said “These attempts to hoodwink voters will fail. The unelected, anti-transparent European Commission has no respect for the intelligence of the Irish people. The Brussels elites think, as always, that they can get away with this behind the opaque walls of Brussels. Libertas will continue to expose the anti-democratic sham that is Brussels.

In June, over 600 Libertas-backed candidates will run across member countries of the European Union for the European Parliament elections. Libertas.eu seeks to have the European voters’ mandate to reform the EU. This is the first time a pan-European party will contest the European elections.
