http://edition.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/0...help/?hpt=Sbin http://edition.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/0...help/?hpt=Sbin [quote]CNN) -- The next question on many people's minds after learning about the earthquake devastation in Haiti has been: How can I help? Most organizations are asking for monetary donations. They are not seeking material items, like clothes or food, or volunteers at this time. These agencies have set up phone lines, online donation pages and even texting for individuals to contribute to their relief efforts. We've compiled a list of a few organizations who are in Haiti helping those in need. These resources include the highest-rated charities by CharityNavigator.org, which is an independent, nonprofit organization that evaluates charity groups based on effectiveness and financial stability. These sites are vetted by CNN journalists for credibility. For additional resources, go to Impact Your World American Red Cross The American Red Cross' primary focus during the initial response of an emergency is feeding, sheltering and supplying any other basic needs. To donate: Go to RedCross.org, hit donate now button at top and then International Response Fund. You also can text "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the International Response Fund. The money will go directly to relief efforts in Haiti. Or call 1-800-Red-Cross. If Paypal doesn't hook up with the help organizations, go to your local Red Cross or Salvation Army, etc... they can make sure the money goes where you intend it to be. Or send a check or cashier's check. It may take longer, but help organizations will be needing more and more for an ongoing support mission. By the way, we should ask Wall Street to contribute, and it would be nice if we weren't dumping cash into wars. It would be great if Haiti had a Democratic Gov. who cared about the people, and where the people could actually vote and steer their own course as we can. The facts are that Wall St. will only contribute if it works in their favor, we are throwing money into wars, the Haitian gov. never has cared and maybe never will, and the suffering people of Haiti had and have no say in how their gov. spends money or operates. Anyone who, especially at a time like this would accuse the Haitian citizens of not preparing or worse, partying instead of preparing is cold-hearted and ignorant. I hope you all open your hearts as far as possible and give. I wonder why these nations do not plan ahead for any problems especially since they live in a hurricane prone area of the world. Maybe if the country leaders were thinking of their citizens more than themselves they would be prepared. Think about erecting many hundreds of short towers, 30 feet tall, with 5 to 10,000 tanks of water around the city. These would be similar to our water towers except not as tall and more stable for hurricanes and earthquakes. These storage tanks would be relativitively inexpensive and would serve as a quick and readily available supply for drinking water. After thought, yes, but now is the time to start thinking about the future. I do feel sorry for them, but since they chose or lack to chose proper leadership they need to take the proper action now. Building codes are severely lacking as evident of lack of rebar in concrete construction. When they do rebuild that is the time to think about what the future holds. Meanwhile, they need to take care of their people and get on with survival. Sorry for their plight just as I am sorry for the plight of so many and especially New Orleans for its lack of planning. If you can't read, it is hard to learn. If you can't learn, you tend to make bad decisions on leadership. Now, add in the limited home grown resources, so they have to rely heavily on the international market. If you can't but steel to build water towers, how can you prepare? If you can't read the instructions on how to make steel reinforced concrete buildings, how can your make a building to withstand and earthquake of this magnitude. Realize this quake was a little stronger than the 1989 quake in San Fransisco that rocked the world series, and ask yourself, could they have prepared bet
