Terrorisme, islamitisch fundamentalisme en een nucleair Iran behoren tot de grootste kopzorgen van de Amerikanen en Europeanen. Dat toont de studie Transatlantic trends die vandaag wordt vrijgegeven.
Het internationaal terrorisme is zowel voor de Europeanen (66 procent) als de Amerikanen (79 procent) een ,,zeer belangrijke dreiging’’.

De grootste verschuiving in de attitudes aan weerszijden van de Atlantische Oceaan geldt het islamitisch fundamentalisme. Dat ziet 56 procent van de ondervraagde Europeanen en 61 procent van de Amerikanen nu als een ,,zeer belangrijke dreiging’’. Vergeleken met vorig jaar vormt dat een stijging met 13 procentpunten bij de Amerikanen en 11 procent bij de Europeanen. Het sterkst steeg de bezorgdheid in het Verenigde Koninkrijk (+ 22 ), Italië (+19) en Spanje (+12).

Wat de islam betreft oordeelt eenzelfde meerderheid (56 procent) van Amerikanen en Europeanen dat ,,de waarden van de islam niet verzoenbaar zijn met de waarden van democratie’’, een overtuiging die het sterkst leeft in Duitsland (67 procent) en waarmee ook 45 procent van de Turken het eens is.

Vierentachtig procent van de Europeanen en 79 procent van de Amerikanen vindt dat de inspanningen moeten doorgaan om te verhinderen dat Iran een kernwapen zou kunnen verwerven. Maar een militaire optie vindt momenteel maar genade bij vijf procent Europeanen en vijftien procent Amerikanen.

Het onderzoek toont dat Amerikanen en Europeanen in grote mate dezelfde strategische dreigingen zien. Maar dat betekent nog geen betere samenwerking. De steun voor de Navo bij de Europeanen is gedaald tot 54 procent, en slecht 37 procent vindt ,,Amerikaans leiderschap’’ in internationale zaken nog wenselijk. De goedkeuring van het buitenlands beleid van president George W. Bush staat op een povere 18 procent. Overigens keurt voor het eerst in vijf jaar peilingen naar de transatlantische trends nu ook een meerderheid van Amerikanen (58 procent) het buitenlands beleid van de eigen president af. De verbetering van de transatlantische betrekkingen lijkt te zullen moeten wachten op het vertrek van Bush.

Eerlijkheidshalve er ook nog bij vermelden dat 2 van die 3 landen reeds te maken hebben gehad met aanslagen. Ze hebben er reeds een aantal decennia mee te maken.

Omdat twee van die landen meegelopen hebben met de inval van Irak, Dat zijn twee ellementen die veel meer gewicht hebben dan het gegeven wat hun huidige regerings kleur is.
